It a complex flash the TLA 360, your best bet is the manual, as I recall in TTL mode the display indicates the distance range that the flash can give a correct exposure for, with the set film speed and lens aperture, and flash head zoom setting i.e. the control range of the flash circuitry. It will probably be different for other flash modes, power settings, flash exposure compensation settings etc.

@@joemorleyphotocinema I think that you need to read both the flash and camera manuals, as the behaviour tends to depend on the modes of both the camera and the flash, in combination, in TTL mode the camera does the flash metering. There will be a mode that will do what you want, but you need to read up on the different modes and work out the required camera and flash settings.

Hi Paul - thanks for this very informative video! As others have said there is such a lack of Contax 645 content online that isn't centred on the (ugh) wedding industry. I'm a photographer in Canada and I have some particular questions for you about your thoughts on several of these lenses - is there a way I can get in touch with you by email or another method? Thanks very much in advance! Mark

hi, I connected the flash bracket msb-1 with the tla 360 flash, I connected the cable.. if I look in the viewfinder of the contax it gives me the flash light but the flash doesn't fire, am I making a mistake in some setting on the flash or on the 645? thanks if you can help me
@contaxpaulharrison942

The flash should fire when you press the shutter release on the camera and the shutter fires (take the dark slide out). You could try the TLA 360 directly on the hot shoe of the 645. You get more functionality on the hot shoe it should set the zoom level on the flash, just stick the flash in TTL and the camera in AV. If it works on the hot shoe it might be the cable on the flash bracket, if it doesn't work on the hot shoe, I would guess it is the flash. try another Contax flash if you have one. start testing with the hot shoe and work outwards. the viewfinder display only needs one of the wires in the cable to work.

@@luigidevita You good just connect the TLA360 to the socket on the 645 via a TLA cable and put in on the flash bracket anyway, it would work as well as via the Flash Bracket cable. The TLA cable would go between the socket on the camera (like the flash bracket cable) and the corresponding socket on the TLA 360. You use a TLA extension cord 100 SS or similar cable, always assuming that the problem is not the socket on the camera. As I recall there is also a TLA extension cable that you can connect to the hot show. There are a few options that you could use.

About the sexiest 645 camera out there, I’d argue. Don’t get me wrong, I love and adore my Mamiya 645 1000s(especially with the waist level viewfinder), but the Contax 645 is so gorgeous! Only Contax camera I have is a 139 Quartz in beautiful condition. Along with the little 45mm Tessar lens, it’s fantastic for traveling due to its compactness and pleasure of use. Great video👍🏼👍🏼

I have the Contax 645 system with the 45mm, 120mm, 140mm and 210mm (I sadly lost my 80mm). The system has been collecting dust for many years, as I have been shooting digital. I have recently bought a Fuji 50s ii digital camera and a Finger adapter to be able to mount my Contax 645 lenses on the Fuji 50s ii. However, I have noticed that my Contax 645 lenses over the time have gathered considerable dust / haze and maybe some fungus. They need to be cleaned to regain the contrast that the lenses are made to have. Does anyone know a place where I can have have them cleaned. I understand that I will have to send the lenses to the repair center. I live in Prague in Czech Republic. I went to the largest photo shop in the city, that also provides camera repair service. They said that they could clean the Contax 645 lenses because the lenses have autofocus. I assume they were worried that the lens would not work after re-assembly. Please let me know if you know of a place that can clean my Contax 645 lenses? Regards, Mark

i aquired a C645 around 2011, a year later i bought an P45+ phase one back, i exchanged the back in 2017 for an IQ180, absolutely dream combo. then i did something "stupid", i sold the IQ180 and got into the new Fuji GFX system and been using it since then. But in late 2020 i aquired an P65+ back (damn digital backs are rare for the Contax) i started to use it more and more again, until now my Fuji system has been degraded to a dust collector. The C645 is by far my most beloved MF system, the way it handels is just the best because its so simple to operate. and of course the zeiss glass is amazing. Its a shame Zeiss didnt sell the rights to P1, instead they acquired mamiya. would have been amazing to continue to develope this system further. thx for the video paul

Wherever I asked if there are mounts for C645 digital backs everyone would tell me that there are on papers but they are so rare that they might not even existed for commercial use. Thus I ended up downgrading to Mamiya 645AF, which if I am fair the only compromise is that there is no 80mm f2 lens nor an apperature ring. Outside of these two factors everything else is comparable between these two and in some cases Mamiya shines. I have used the GFX too, I can't say I hate anything about them, they are better in most aspects than the 645 cameras with the digital back, but the experience is just addicting once you use a digital back with a MF body you can't go back regardless the benefits. They feel what 35mm cameras felt back in the day, a somewhat compact and reliable option for scenarios where speed and reaction is required. Hope you Contax live long.

That's pretty up there. I can get a Mamiya, Bronica, Pentax 67, etc. for around $500-$1000 dollars depending. But 5 grand on a medium format camera is stupid.
