Is Tejas ZZ top's best album? Or is it the tried and true Tres Hombres? Or the mega hit album Eliminator? Let Martin know and continue the debate in the comments!!

Never really heard Tejas to be honest. I like Tres Hombres better than you. Fandango is special to me cause the live show was taped in the old Warehouse in New Orleans. The best place in the 70s to hear some of the greatest rock groups. So, it's more for historical basis.

Just so you know Martin, as a fellow Canadian I bought this album years ago when it was brand new and to this day it is my go to album by them as well. However my favourite song by them is I need you tonight from Eliminator.

Each his own but Tejas has ALWAYS been my #1 top album by a mile. The tunes are so good and the production is absolute dusty dry Texas perfection with a low end that I don't think exist on any of the other records. Frank with all those paradiddle beats...so good

Solid arguments, but you'll never change my love for Deguello. Their version of I Thank You is my favourite ZZ Top song, with that thumping Dusty Hill bass line. Plus you've got all those other great tunes like I'm Bad, I"m Nationwide and Cheap Sunglasses.

Tejas is by far my favourite zz top album. Everything on it is perfect from Billy's killer tone and Frank's epic drum sound and the songs are one knock out punch after another. To be fair their whole 70s output is brilliant but Tejas for me is them reaching the peak of their powers.

Love your work Martin. Yes Deguello would be my first choice, probably cuz I came out freshman year in high school, followed by Tejas. You described it perfectly, that laid back unusual production and drum style, but a lot of great songs on there. Keep up the good work guys 🤘

My ZZ Top Top 5 is: 05. Degüello 04. Tejas 03. Eliminator 02. Rio Grande Mud 01. Tres Hombres. Tejas certainly has some great tracks, I especially like Arrested For Driving While Blind.

I think their 1st is an amazingly strong début and, after 30 years of listening to their music, is now my favourite with Rhythmeen a close 2nd. Your knowledge and enthusiasm Martin is so infectious that i have to have a major 'listening session' after one of your videos. Many thanks.

Martin ruthlessly assassinates another sacred cow, this time known as Tres Hombres! I love these casual "Popoff Hit 'n Runs", e.g., "actually, Vol. 4 depresses me! But as I was saying... that second Love/Hate album is a modern masterpiece from top to bottom". No "heck" from me on this one. El Diablo is so atmospheric and literally sounds the same way the album cover looks...love it!

Tremendous, tremendous show MARTIN. Much enjoyed! I was a Senior in high school in 1979/80 so that Deguello album has special meaning and overall I love it probably the best. I will say this , after your Sea 🌊 of Tranquility episode , you made me revisit RHYTHMEEN 96 after your high praise and I definitely have that in my top 5( underrated). Tejas, in my top 5 as well. Much enjoyed!!!👍💯

The groove (esp on El Diablo) is killer, really astounding musicianship. There's a slightly melancholy vibe on this one that I really dig - like you're totally alone in the desert, tripping under a starry sky. I think that it got such a bad response at the time that the band ran away from that sound and mood - too bad. Tres Hombres is SO perfect in every way that I think it's their best album, I always recommend it to newbies. But like Powerage or Another Perfect Day, I secretly love Tejas more. I like Tejas so much that I even like the 80's remix - how's that for contrarian!

I had tried to get into their music several times, but without any luck. I found it boring. Then I heard Rio Grande Mud, and I was hooked. Now I love or like most of their albums. But yes, Rio Grande Mud has to be my favorite.

@Martin Popoff Yes, it's the trying to get there stuff. But I just find that very charming in this case. Sometimes, what creates the most exiting music, is when artists are trying to get it all right. And I really enjoy the playing on the first two. It's so alive, raw and heavy. And so is the production (or should I say lack of production).

Tejas is my favorite ! The song El Diablo always blew me away , especially Frank Beards drumming on the track. Notice from the songs start the rhythm beat just moves along and through the track picks up and by the end Frank is just cooking on those drums. El Diablo is a true masterpiece. Only listen to Tejas on the first pressing of vinyl. Some CD remastered versions of Tejas have been totally ruined , especially El Diablo !

I'm with you Martin in the most of your top picks, except I put Deguello as my favorite ZZ Top album. That album represented a crossover from the Texas blues sound to the new ZZ Top techno/pop sound from eliminator. A little bit of everything including the awesome vocal performance of manic mechanic.

This is my favorite ZZ Top album. I love the drums on this record. Everyone is on top of their game here. Dusty Hills vocals kick ass on Ten Dollar Man and I love the harmony vocals on She's a Heartbreaker. It kind of reminds me of early Beatles with the harmony vocals on that track in the chorus. There's definitely no filler on this album. Every song kicks ass. The guitar tone is outstanding throughout the entire album as well.

My go to ZZ album is always a Fandango. I agree with Martin to a degree that the live side is not the best but I still enjoy it. The studio songs are killer! Tres Hombres and Deguello are tied at 2 for me. A couple songs on each that are just okay to me but most of both albums are top notch! Tejas rules too. I wouldn't argue against it being someone's favorite. I like most of ZZ's catalog. Obviously there's the massive hits that I don't need to hear again. Such a great, fun band!

Great job Martin and interesting choice. I agree the production is definitely way softer than a lot of their other albums and I think Billy is playing a Strat on a lot of this record? However the playing is still extremely tight and rocking. I am with you that fandango studio side is amazing and I wish they would’ve made that a full studio record because the studio side is absolutely fantastic. One of the first records I ever bought.

What is more valid - the opinions of the casual fan of ZZ Top or the opinions of the diehard fans. I never heard of any of the songs that are on the album you chose. Eliminator would be my choice. I don't think I would have paid any attention to the older stuff if they never did Eliminator.

I would always pick both Rio Grande Mud and Tres Hombres before Tejas, but it's a personal choice of how you hear these albums that counts. I agree with Martin regarding Fandango, if it had been a studio album in its entirity and all of the quality of the actual studio cuts, it would be my favourite too.

Other than maybe "El Loco", ZZ Top were incapable of making a bad, or even mediocre record until after Eliminator. The live side of Fandango was a disappointment for me, but the studio side is great. Tejas is great also, but I'm going to follow the herd on this one. Tres Hombres all the way. Even El Loco could be worse, it just sounds like they were finding their way to "Eliminator" and didn't have it dialed in quite yet. I love their heavier sounding, post '80s records too. ZZ Top is just an all-time classic American band!

Strong argument for Tejas but I'm staying with Tres Hombres. Four of my top 10 ZZT songs are the first 4 songs on Tres Hombres! They never got muddier than "Jesus", never rocked harder than "Beer Drinkers," and did anyone ever shred slower or better than the "La Grange" outro?

"Tejas" has always come off as a kinder, gentler ZZ Top album, and that's why I've never really got into it that much. I tend to lend towards "Deguello," although I have a very fondness for "Antenna" and "Rhythmean." Billy Gibbons' guitar tone on those two albums is just simply luscious, and the songs groove like MF's. But I don't think ZZ Top ever made a terrible album.

Personally, I find Tejas to be too tame for my tastes. To me, ZZ Top is at their best when Dusty Hill is at full bass throttle and the band are playing at higher tempos. So I tend to reach for Tres Hombres, Deguello and Eliminator when imbibing some ZZ Top. Enjoyed the show, as always.

My contrarian choice would be El Loco. I remember the first time I heard it, blew my mind, there were some really weird stuff there, the voices, crazy funk, sound effects mixed with good old time rock and roll. Album had a long, not so great semi ballad keeping it from being a perfect album, forgot the name of that song. Still, a great album and cover. They stopped using the album titles in spanish after El Loco until Mezcalero, those were so funny to us, those crazy bearded gringos mariguanos lol. And you are right, they began to experiment with different sounds on Tejas till they became "full New Wave" in the 80's and then, a heavier band in the 90's. A more controversial opinion would be liking the 90's albums more than the 70's albums. I mean they are heavier and the guitars so loud and loose without the couple of country songs that were obligatory in their 70's albums. And their 90's albums didn't got rid completly of the futuristic sound that were so cool on their 80's albums. I still don't know how to process Mezcalero or what to do with it, a new era?
