As a teenager in the 80's video age, Eliminator was my introduction to ZZ Top. I went crazy for the band. I joined the ZZ Top fan club and started reading up on the history of the band. I decided to venture into the past of the band and discovered the early catalog and loved it. All this happened between the release of Eliminator and Afterburner. From there, nothing could compare to the 70's catalog.

Love your top 3. Unforgettable period for ZZ. Heard Tres Hombes before the first two but immediately added all 3 after seeing them as an opening band. This three man wrecking crew blew me away- the fastest guitar playing I had ever seen. They did a number that ended up counting to 1.2.3 BLOW YOUR TOP. Swore I could see smoke coming off Billy’s guitar. To this day, I have forgotten who was headlining that night in Richmond,Va. I’m certain they wished they had never agreed to follow “The Little Ole Band From Texas” Believe it was sometime in ‘73, no later than ‘74. Saw again same venue 10 years later.after Dusty and BFG had gone from fairly clean shaven cowboys to their signature 2ft. long beards. Of course by then they had become touring monsters. Had become polished with a few theatrical gimmicks to the show. That night their opening act was completely discounted as forgotten faster than you could say Afterburner.

A generic comment: I totally agree with Pete when he complains about the excess of musics in some albums. LP supports 40 minutes of music. When CD came supporting almost 80 minutes, the bands started to make longer albums. 16 songs instead of 8 or 10… And some albums that should be absolutely killers from top to bottom got filled with uninspired songs… We don’t want quantity, we want quality. We don’t want to be tired in the end of an album, we want to feel like listening again!

ZZ Top’s 1st album through el loco... Those are stellar classic albums I love. Totally disappointed and fell off the train as a fan when eliminator came out... didn’t care for the sequel, or it’s sequel etc. last couple are decent, but no songs with the staying power of the 70s songs. In my opinion, of course. ✌️🎶🔥🍺

I totally agree with your top picks Pete. And Eliminator as well. I think that we all enjoy your top ten, and ranking the albums shows. Now, whenever you can get around to it, do shows for the following: Moody Blues, Alan Parsons Project, Bob Seger, Metallica, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac. I'm sure there are more that I can't think of right now, but I'm sure you know of some. All my favorite music and bands or artist was from the 60's & 70's. And I just thought of a two more: Judas Priest, Scorpions, So , in your time man. I'm looking forward to seeing more shows. love you dude.

I often disagree with these album rankings but you are spot on with this one. The one and two spots I go back and forth on. When you get into their best stuff, it's really hard to rank. I started listening to ZZ-Top in high school with their first album

My favorite era is the 80's, Top 3: Eliminator, El Loco and Afterburner, they were ruling the world back then, one of the few seventies bands that were better in the 80's. Then I love this trilogy of albums from the 70's: Top 4 to 6: Tejas, Deguello and 3 Hombres. I need to give a serious to their 90's stuff or more recent albums but I kind of like Antenna (9) and Rhythmeen (8)

I would never tell someone to turn off any ZZ Top, but here's my list: 15) XXX (songwriting seemed a bit lacking on this one) 14) Mescalero (about half of this is really good, the rest... meh) 13) Recycler (trying to drop some of the electronics here) 12) Antenna (this is a nostalgic record for me) 11) Rhythmeen (a really heavy album for them) 10) La Futura (such a great, bluesy album) 9) El Loco (some of the songs are a little too silly for me) 8) Tejas (I'm just haven't listened to this as much as some of the others for some reason) 7) Afterburner (this one used to be much lower for me, but in the last 5 years I've really come to like it a lot) 6) Eliminator (they updated their sound very well) 5) Degüello (seems overlooked, even though it has some huge hits on it) 4) Fandango! (the studio tracks are some of my favorites of theirs) 3) ZZ Top's First Album (so dirty that it used to scare me - in a good way!) 2) Rio Grande Mud (pretty much a tie with the first album to me) 1) Tres Hombes (Not a bad or wasted note here. Jesus Just Left Chicago may be my favorite blues rock song ever) Thanks for the video, as always, Pete!

I really love the early ZZ albums, so my favourites are Tres Hombres, Rio Grande Mud and Fandango. I do enjoy the "synth' period, particularly Eliminator, Afterburner less so. Their later albums for me, not so good. Recycler is pretty good though.
