This speech is the reason I became a scientist. He may have died when I was only 6 and been apart of a different field than me, but Carl Sagan has influenced my life more than any other single person.

I wasn't even born when he passed in 1996. And yet I've also been inspired enough, that I'm going into engineering. To be capable of influencing others even after not being alive is astonishingly beautiful. Reminds me of the proverb; "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.”

And yet, Carl Sagan who claimed to be an agnostic, also said, "An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who KNOWS there is no God." This seems to be a contradiction to his opening statement here. How does Carl Sagan know that the cosmos is "all there is, all there ever was and all there ever will be?" Wouldn't he have to have all knowledge to know this?
@isaiahphillip4112

Everyone is an agnostic, gnosticism addresses the knowledge one holds, theism/atheism addresses belief. I'm an atheist, I believe no religion has met its burden of proof and provided sufficient evidence for the existence of its god, thus I find it just as illogical to believe Jesus died for me, as to believe that Zeus and the other Greek gods exist. I don't believe. Yet none of us can know with absolute certainty whether a god exists or not, we're all agnostic. But keep in mind, nobody can know whether there's a invisible magic dragon in the sky or not, so simply not being able to know for sure isn't a very good basis of evidence.

"All that is?" Um.... and you know this how? What observation and experiment could yield this conclusion? Or maybe you're just re-defining "cosmos" (previously defined as "the physical world") to now mean "all that is" in which case the statement is simply a tautology and has no truth value whatsoever. Cosmos could be an excellent science program if not for its condescension, logical fallacies, and atheist agenda. Please someone do a real astronomical science program that sticks to the science.
@MrBman804

"Cosmos" means nothing but a complex and ordered system, that is our physical reality, mass and energy obeying rules. Sagan goes on later to say, "we will be careful to distinguish speculation from fact" The Cosmos IS, that cannot be denied, everything beyond that is speculation, outside of Spacetime. I suspect that both of us have different ideas of what is beyond the Cosmos, but since we both live on this Earth, living for an instant in the Cosmos, we can only debate the beyond. But since there is no quantifiable theories for such a place, it does not belong in a science program.

Your point is well taken. You accept Sagan's proposition concerning the cosmos as analytic whereas I took it to be synthetic. His definition does go a bit beyond the way the term is often used (orderly system as opposed to chaos), but not beyond some of the common definitions (Webster equates "cosmos" with "universe" and equates "universe" with "all"). I saw the proposition as synthetic due to Sagan's penchance for atheism. Three of the world's major religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) view God as the creator and the cosmos as his creation. Hence, God is 'outside' of all things (both discovered and undiscovered, invisible as well as visiible, and even outside of time and space). Thus, to say that the cosmos is all that is, has been, or ever will be, can be seen as denying even the remote possibility of these religious views being correct, and I took this to be an exaggerated claim on his part. But perhaps that's reading too much into his statement. You may be correct that he was merely giving an interesting twist to old definitions rather than making new claims. At any rate, he was a good astronomer and produced an intriguing tag line for a successful TV series. (So intriguing in fact that we're still talking about it.)
