You have to love it to get the love back. I do not think all the issues you mentioned are because its necessarily neglected, cars have ware and tear. I'm based in Australia and I bought my '98 E38 740iL brand new and it was M sports pack optioned up, over the years I have found very regular servicing (not a dealer) by a knowledgeable mechanic has been the key to reasonable cost. I reckon I spend on average 2,000 pa. Some years its 1,000 others 3,500. But overtime I have replaced the roof headliner, all wheel speed sensors, ABS relays, cam position sensors, the cluster pixel set, the electronic fan, all cooling hoses, aircon O-rings, belts etc, I have updated to LED lighting, added Bluetooth, Apple carplay etc as well as added the Resler iBus module to code and display data just like a modern BMW. I currently have no error codes and everything running OK. Oh all BMW's have some sort of oil leak happening that need replacement gaskets etc, that's a given. I have done 300,000 klm and twice a year I travel interstate 1,500 kms in one 12 hour run both ways. And yearly I detail it back to near new ($350) I think those long runs with regular oil servicing are a key to keeping the engine running at its best. Also keeping the battery trickle charged is important it doesn't like low voltage. It goes as well today as when it was new. It's coming up for 25 yrs and it will go another 10-15 yrs for me. I have a Honda Hatchback for city runs and I use the E38 just for pleasure and my long trips. Good luck fixing yours up, I got all four wheel speed sensors for 60 bucks (Chinese of course) BMW wanted over $1,000

Happy to hear you love yours so much. They are absolutely fantastic! The issue with mine(and many I see for sale) is that they didn’t get the regular maintenance required to make them reliable. They do require a good amount of money to keep them happy every year. It’s definitely worth it, but people who aren’t prepared will definitely caught off guard. It’s not like an e30, which requires basically no maintenance. Just a timing chain and guide job is 4-5000 USD from an independent shop. It’s tough, because that’s where BMW’s get the reputation for being unreliable. A car will go through a few owners without proper maintenance, and once the thing needs to be fixed, it leaves the new owner broke and angry.

I've purchased an E38 740i Sport, an E38 740i and a E38 750iL all at some level of being a project car. I went into each car knowing it would cost a minimum of $10k each above purchase price to bring them up to my standards. These cars were the top-of-the-line luxury car in 1999 and 2000. To think they can be brought back to the quality/reliability of car they were/are for cheap isn't realistic. Once brought back though, there isn't a finer, more satisfying car to own.

I get a tick at startup, but was told that was a bad VANOS seal. Guides were done 2 years ago, but probably safe to do them again at some point
