Sure...the courtesans are horrible liars. Although, they'd probably be beaten, starved or worse by those who owned them if they lose their clients. But also, the men who would promise to free them, to marry them, to love them, etc and who never did. Someone who is lonely, forced to please men all day long who only care about themselves...would probably fall in love often and then get disappointed. Again and again. Selling Women by Amy Stanley is a great book introducing historical prostitution in Japan. Prostitutes were mostly children sold into slavery by families who couldn't afford them; swords were kept away from them so they couldn't kill themselves. The only way out was for someone to buy her freedom, and hopefully to become a mistress (as a "fallen women" she probably couldn't marry). It's depressing and grotesque, but fascinating to read their stories.

This was mainly true for women in the red light districts during the Edo period. Originally Japanese sex workers worked independently. But the vilification of sex work by religious authorities, led to the creation of red light districts by the Tokugawa Shogunate in order to control sex workers. And any sex workers that worked outside of the red light district were punished and forced to work inside the red light district against their will.

And somehow this "well if you really love me then you would..." arms race resulted in a weird double suicide obsession. Even thought I conceptually understand it is still pretty bizarre. It is interesting how heavily this whole thing is tied into the fantasy created by literature. To the point where double suicide stories were banned because people kept being inspired to do it. The Edo government was often censor happy but that one I kind of get. It's like if the scenario of Romeo and Juliet was a lot more similar to real life and didn't have those comedic contrivances that get them to commit suicide, so people in those situations thought it was the best way to show thier love if they couldn't be together.
@insertname3977

You also have a culture that doesn't shun suicide for the most part compared to Christian Europe where suicide is one of the worst sins you could ever commit. It's also part of the reason why the ending of Romeo and Juliette is suppose to be considered obscene because of the fact that they damn their eternal souls for such a fleeting moment of "love".

interesting, in the Spanish Empire, things were very different, women of pleasure, during the Middle Ages, in Europe were seen as a necessary evil, in Spain was no exception, they were tolerated by the church because when a man had access to one of these women did not harm women of good family, so they were not so persecuted, but in Spain this would have very radical changes by the 1500 and 1600 centuries, Unlike what happens in this video, these women were forbidden to go to the populated centers of the city, they had to be far, far away from them. For their part, women of pleasure had to be over 12 years old and have lost their virginity - in addition to not possessing any noble title, Spain went so far as to try to prohibit prostitution, King Philip IV prohibited it by Royal Pragmatic on February 4, 1623: "We order and command that, henceforth, in no city, town, or village of our kingdoms, can be tolerated, and that, in fact, no place of disorder, no public house where women traffic with their bodies, be tolerated. We forbid and interdict these houses and order the suppression of those that exist. We likewise charge our councilors to watch with particular care the execution of this decree, as a thing of great importance, and the justices to execute it each in their jurisdiction, under penalty, for the judges who tolerate these houses or authorize them in any place whatsoever, of being condemned for this fact to the deprivation of their employment and to a fine of 50,000 maravedis, applicable: one third to our chamber, one to the judge and one to the denouncer; and we wish the contents of this law to be put by chapter of residence." as you should suppose, this did not work, where there is supply there is demand, what did happen was that the jails throughout the empire were filled with women of pleasure until bursting, this continued until 1700 where they stopped persecuting.

I chose to believe this is where the curse of couple's breaking up after name/cutesy tattoos. Happens all over & it's damn near a guarantee that if you get their name, you'll be single in less than a year. Even shorter if it's both of you.

This whole "needing more convincing proof" thing and the snowball ing effects of these methods make it seem like maybe the guys weren't as "in on the joke" as the beginning made them out to be, and obviously having someone pretend to love you (especially when it's their job) can be confusing (especially for men) so this all seems very shady and scary (as sex work always has been) Thankfully post capitalism once we don't need to make a living in order to survive sex work will be a lot safer and won't even involve rape or corecion anymore, like it still does to this day thanks to it being illegal instead of regulated and such 🙃

Geisha and Oiran are different. To be honest, they are meant so much more than just “s** workers.”
