Giant river otters are extremely vocal and make a wide range of sounds, from soft purrs to loud squeals.
I've been trying to see and hear giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) on my previous expeditions to South America but without much luck. While they are considered the noisiest species of otter, they've been poached and persecuted for decades and their numbers have dwindled as a result. Habitat encroachment from farming and industrial activity has also been an issue along with forest fires.
I had a very distant sighting in the Javati valley a couple of years back, but nothing as exciting as my recent encounters in Brazil. On this expedition I was able to observe these fascinating mammals up close several times and for rather long periods. They seem to do well in the Pantanal where prey is abundant and the habitat is relatively healthy.
I was able to set up several recording rigs on the edge of the river where they had been observed. The first few setups did not yield anything but in one spot they seemed to be more vocal. With this last rig I captured a good variety of calls fairly close up. It's not an exhaustive catalog of their reported 22 distinct types of vocalisations but it's a good start. One day I hope to go back to the Pantanal to record them more thoroughly.
Recorded in the Brazilian Pantanal with Zoom F3 and Lom mikroUsi microphones. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:
