Thank you Bino. Another excellent video on how to climb safe and stay alive. One thing I noticed, if they put the release facing away from the termination knot side, perhaps it might mitigate the issue.

Thank you again for this good safety video again. I climb myself always with a zig-zag and a figure 8 for termination knot. I will definitely change this termination knot. I never thaugh a was putting myself at risk using a figure 8. Great video again

Figure eight knot actually elimenates the problem he's talking about because you can make the loop longer and the knot will be completely out of the way of the chain. Just add a carabiner that has an isolator/captive on it so the loop cant spin around on the carabiner. You can also add a thick rubber band where the loop meets the biner to make the loop tight.

I was wondering if a friction hitch cord (eye to eye) could be tied to a termination knot, that would move the knot away and not interfere with a hitch climbers pulley. Would that work? How safe would that be?

That was a good video I haven't had any issues like that with my zigzag maybe it's zig zag should make a longer Caribbean to open and not from hitting the chain

When this happens to a production climber....they call it Tuesday. The same issue can arise when using a prussik cord. The best solution is to run a tight eye, it virtually eliminates the problem. This is a major issue and something every climber should be aware of when running a terminal knot in certain systems.

In my 6 months of zig zag use, I’m often tying a termination knot because it threads better on my short non-spliced rope. Besides the silky smooth performance, my second favorite feature is the ability to space the termination knot away from the down button, and the third is the built in swivel. For MRS I use the other rated hole, as it keeps a larger gap between chain trigger and anchor bend while also keeping the rubber grooves in the ‘chicane hole’ in better shape….I have not yet climbed very high on my zig zag because my short rope has no splices and my new long rope has two (I just clip the chicane to the hitch climber for higher projects) Anybody have experience threading a splife/slaice through this zig zag? Does it wear out the splice more quickly?

I use the Kong D.N.A. Ovilone & it keeps things pretty much away or out of your way no matter what the situation. It's also a steel carabiner so it gives you some weight to throw it wherever you need as well.

I prefer the anchor hitch. No issues🤙 also I roll the tail end of the hitch to the body side of the carabiner opposite of the gate so that I can open it freely without the tail interfering.

I have a simple solution to that, I just tie a bowline so the knot is well above the biner, it will never interfere with the petzel or any regular friction hitch and a hitchclimber pulley, also with the bowline the termination on the rope at the biner will always be in a different spot and not wearing on the same place all the time like a spliced eye etc. :{)
@BinoH
2 жыл бұрын
That's true it could make it higher but a bowline is not the best termination knot because it can come loose unless you are using a Yosemite finish. The carabiner on the ZigZag it tight but if it were to loosen up it could side load your carabiner.

Just make the loop of rope from your knot longer so it doesn't touch the go link of the ZZ and use a cable tie around the loop just above the top of the biner 👍

I always start with an eye but it eventually gets removed and im forced to use a knot. Ive never slipped more than a few inches when using an anchor knot, though I prefer an eye any day. I'm quick to remove ten feet of the eye end (where the rope gets the hardest use) at the first sign of damage

not a climber, but could there be a cable loop or a rod with eyes on either end or a super long caribiner that would move the knot well above the zig zag?

Dude I have a question, I been using muy Zig Zag & Chicane with Drenaline for years and it just works perfect on SRS and MRS. I just got a blue moon rope 11.7, works ok with zig zag in MRS, but when i put the chicane on, the hole sistem slips, kind of dangerous. How is that possible or why do that happens?
@BinoH

It may very what works well with the Zigzag. You may want to go back to the owners manual and check compatibility of ropes.

@@BinoH makes sense, thanks for your answer. I have been using my Zig Zag with Chicane with teufelberger drenaline 11.8mm for years and it just works perfect on SRS and MRS. I tested the rope teufelberger fly 11.1 and works fine with zig zag plus mechanical device, even Zig zag allows 11.5 as minimum rope size. Why could slips with a 11.7 brand new rope in SRS?

My novice untrained point of view: Not for me! I do think it is a convenient tool, but it is so easy to use that any twig, bump etc. could set it off. What they could do to make it safer is to reverse spring load it. Meaning; to activate the trigger release (descend) the device requires greater force to be applied against a spring. The spring job is to want the device to be in the locked position at all times requiring a greater force to release the trigger to descend. Or just shit can this device and buy one that is a better design. You can only fall to your death once. (JF)

With the ready availability of spliced eyes, there’s no reason to use a termination knot. Eyes eliminate the problems highlighted in this video, and they also save time which saves fatigue, and eliminate the possibility of knot tying errors which injure and kill tree workers regularly
