In this episode we're looking at the innovative character design of Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII.
In many ways FF8 is an unappreciated turning point in the history of final fantasy and JRPG character design where previous forms such as Chibi design or the super-deformed characters of Final Fantasy VII which emerged from Chibi design, were traded instead for figurative realism and realistic proportions in Final Fantasy characters. This arguably was the first attempt at where we are today with Final Fantasy, pushing towards realistic looking characters in realistic worlds. Here we look at Final Fantasy 8 and critically analyse the design of Squall Leonhart to see how it was approached, and how it changed over the years leading up to Final Fantasy VIII Remaster.
