This short video focuses on the last season of the Natural Year. By now chipmunks have spent months in their territory and are preparing for the winter. While not true hibernators they do enter in a state of rest alternating between sleeping and eating. So unlike bears they depend on stored food rather than fat reserves to get through the winter. New research suggests that as winter temperatures rise because of global warming some chipmunks remain active longer and as such have a lower survival rate. This evidence could indicate dire consequences for other hibernating species as temperatures continue to rise.
