yknow, i wonder if the megamouth might actually be a recently evolved species in a similar fashion to darwinian finches in that they changed niches very quickly in geologic terms. it would certainly be an opening niche given our human impact on baleen whales. perhaps we've unintentionally eliminated a small size (ie similar to the megamouth in size) baleen whale, or another reason could be down to the megamouth taking the niche from a whale or other fish.

The reason why evolution is still a theory and not concrete law is because it constantly changes. Unlike gravity, which remains the same as when Newton first " discovered" it, evolution keeps shifting until the original ideas of Darwin are no longer considered valid. You know, when I saw the thumbnail and read the title, I initially went like, “I dunno this Shark, wonder what it is”, but as the video went on, I realised that I heard about this before. Almost forgot about this, so I love this video! (Well, all Ben G Thomas videos, XD, always intriguing and informative)

One of the reasons that it might have been found close to the surface , could be similar to the whale shark that lives , most of the time at very very deep parts of the ocean and comes up near to the service at certain lunar events also , when it comes close to the coast upward flowing ocean Currents will bring it up closer to the surface, with the aforementioned information, was one of the ways that was used to get, some of the first photographed and video recordings of the whale shark with the knowledge of the lunar activity and the current of the sea ,So maybe this is also not living at the top of sea , but brought up on certain events just ,Food for Thought.

Please get the difference between "theory" and "hypothesis" correct. A theory means that there is plenty of evidence to support the idea from many different sources so it is considered as true. And that using this knowledge you can accuratly predict other events. A hypothesis is an idea that hasnt been supported or not supported enough to be assumed true. Its not the evolution hypothesis after all.

I remember when I was younger during around 2008, the Perth Museum had an ancient mega mouth shark (it was the third ever discovered in 1988) encased in formalin and then in glass. The enclosure was actually in the ground, so you could walk on top of the glass and see it. Always scared the shit out of me, but I was also really fascinated. Then it was relocated into the Perth Boat Museum and into a lifted tank/enclosure. That one was shown in the video. Just though it was kinda cool that I had seen one in person.

3:08 it is ok, that the general public uses hypothesis and theory as synonyms, but it would be nice, if at least science comunicators used the term correctly. a theory is the pinnacle of human knowledge, above natural laws, above mere facts. a theory is never "just" a theory. a theory is corroborated by evidence, has predictive capabilities and explains why things are the way they are.
