Easter eggs and payoffs are better when there's less of them. Too many just becomes a fan service IP circlejerk to squeeze every last dollar they can out of it. Corporate doesn't care that they're watering down the sauce when every mysterious plot thread gets tied into neat little bows with their own streaming mini-series. Thats potential ad revenue. With the way things have been going, Im surprised we havent gotten a "Star Wars: Darth JarJar" yet

I also expected this video to have hundreds of thousands of views, wow. Well produced, edited, and filmed. Well thought out and obviously well researched (huge shout-out for all of the citations, references, and source video links.) This video captures a lot of my thoughts on modern media and art. The best and scariest thing about stories is that they have endings- closure in some form or another. I don't need every lingering question answered. Endless sequels and prequels and side-stories contribute so much to audience fatigue, as you touched on briefly, but it also contributes to the collapse of those franchises both artistically and from a literal standpoint. More movies, more exposure, more money, a decrease in quality... until the franchise makes less money and we get less movies as people get sick of it and inevitably move on to the next thing. If it was a series that you were particularly fond of, the reputation of it is irrevocably tarnished and you might think twice about saying that you love it. This video also captures my thoughts on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for the PC, that is to say, that it is inarguably the best game made in the 21st century (Your exact words I believe.)

The last bit is sad to an inexplicable degree. "I was given a lot of joy by this work of art which I will use as a merely tangential example to talk about something else entirely, but since internet dwelling neo-puritans and ideologues have made it their business to declare it impure and tainted by "insert -ism of the week" by association I will put a disclaimer at the end that I support "current thing" and that I'm willing to disavow my love for that work of art and profits for my video that mentioned it to make it clear to the mob that I do indeed support "current thing" and I'm not guilty of wrongthink. Please don't come after me. I swear I'm not a bad person just because I like the coming of age novels with wizards." That's what that was. That and nothing else. It had no other point other than that for being there and thinking it did merely means you're part of the mob it was supposed to appease.

Dune is a weird example to throw in. The original Frank Herbert book series has 7 books. A trilogy (that's more so a Paul duology and a Leo II sequel) and then a 4th book that takes place thousands of years into the future with the God Emperor Leo II that's a sequel to the original trilogy. Then Chapterhouse and Heritics are another duology that acts as a sequel to the quadrology with another thousands years time jump. With the whole point of the final Dune chapter being how there is no ending and the character's stories will go on forever. I think your discussion is limited in scope. It's not that you think franchises are a problem for art. But mass marketing & appealing to the lowest denominator to make bland formulaic media products that spend more time setting up a million spin offs and forever-sequels with no satisfying plot and character resolution. You seem to only talk about a franchise like if they use & re-use the same character again & again with no change. This isn't a problem for flat characters who use episodic storytelling. But not all franchises have a fixed set of characters. Endgame is a good example of how a franchise can wrap up some plots and characters with good endings within wider narratives while setting up new ones and continuing others. The Dune books are examples of how a book universe can keep exploring new ideas and plots whilst having individual stories. Like anthologies.

Writers, painters, sculptors, even goddamn Harrison Ford no longer participates on the creation of these movies, and I despise what the current movies do. Dear Lord, a Potter series?! Quitting television in 2007 and movies in 2013 appear to have been better and better decisions as time goes by. One reason why the Potter story worked was that it had a beginning and it had an end. The Fantastic This & That and the coming Son of Potter work partly because they are not really continuations of the "franchise." They are fun partly because they don't need Harry to enjoyable. It's hard to say that about these comic book universes.

Really appreciate your note at the end. I understand that Harry Potter impacted a lot of people’s lives, and they’re allowed to have that. But it gets really disheartening to see people, who know I’m trans, say with they’re full chest “Wow, I’m so excited to play Hogwart’s Legacy!” JK Rowling doesn’t just say the occasional “cringey” thing about trans people. She actively spreads misinformation that paints trans people (specifically trans women) as violent rapists, which in turn increases the already disproportionate rate at which trans people are raped and murdered. So yeah, I really appreciate the clarification and the fact that you’re donating to the Trevor Project. Thank you 💖

Every once in awhile we still get a good ending. Guardians of the Galaxy 3's ending was nigh perfect, not just for those movies and the stories of those characters, but it could serve as a wrap for the MCU and that's how I intend to think of it. I'm checking out of superhero movies. I've spent the last 3 years writing and drawing a graphic novel about some characters I originally created for D&D, and decided I wanted to tell stories with them. I plan on making a few sequels because I have a few stories to tell with them, but once I'm done, that's it: I'll finish those character's journeys and move on to something else.

Maybe be a tad tangential, but I’ve been thinking similarly about the state of TV as you have of movies and your observation of how Movies don’t seem to end anymore is something I’ve noticed too, but articulated differently. I’ve been thinking about the MCU as basically a TV show(and a mostly serialized one at that). I think maybe that’s why I had so much difficulty enjoying the Black Widow movie. It meant nothing to me because for all the hype, I didn’t get a good handle on the character or how she fit with the other characters. Maybe I did, but even then I felt the weight of all the context from the other films I was missing. I felt punished for not having caught up with the whole MCU before it, the way most people feel walking in halfway through a movie or when catching the latest episode of a serialized show that you have never seen or haven’t caught up on. I say this with the understanding that episodic (not serialized) shows are generally the ones who tend to be drawn the thinnest because their premises were built for however much interest and creativity the artists were willing to put in. They never seem to end on a satisfying note because they were built to keep running until their legs gave out, not built to stop at stop sign. The saving grace is that even if the show never ended on a good note, most episodes are self contained and the great ones have satisfying endings. Even the bad ones find a way to end somehow. Serialized shows make the line between episodes blurrier because so much carries on from the previous episodes. The tighter written ones are written with a specific ending in mind and use the limited time they have to tell their story economically (making good use of limited resources). The middle of the range ones will at least end each season satisfyingly because of the uncertainty that the show will be renewed. The worst extrapolation of the serialized mindset in shows is the cliffhanger ending that is not just meant to leave some loose threads lying around for the audience to play with when they want engage with the work again, but actively dangling the threads in front of our faces and having the possibility of answers contingent on whether the show gets renewed again. And so the ending is less for the audience’s benefit or for the sake of the story, but a way of trying convince whoever’s in charge to let the show go on. I have been trying to synthesize my ideas into a clear cut position, basically my thoughts are: current shows are the worst of both worlds because the episodes never end and neither do the shows. Their rotting corpses are just shoved to the side when they start to smell. My ideal show combines the best of both with the episode by episode ending of episodic shows with the long term goal of ending in a big event that wraps up the whole thing like serialized shows. My thoughts echo that one sonic meme the gaming community passes around every now and again that says, "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding," as user @Jordan_Mallory originally tweeted. I want fewer shows with shorter overall runtimes made by people who are paid more to work less. I want the world to stop for more than a moment to actually let everyone take in what we already have instead of endlessly chasing more. I am so tired of everything and entertainment should be respite, not another avenue of overwhelm. But the thing is, that’s not me trying to discourage further art. I just want the people making it to take their time to create something they’re proud of, even though our economy disincentivizes that. Sorry for the essay, but I wanted to genuinely engage with the ideas you were bringing up and bring some of my own. I hope I didn’t misrepresent/misunderstand your views and if I did, please let me know.

I noticed that most frustrating thing for me about most new entries in franchises like Star Wars and Harry Potter is how even if they expand on story they somehow make the world feel smaller. In Star Wars evrybody importnt is Skywalker or connected to Luke or Vader, Fantastic Beast's is now about Dumbledore and Grindelwald (not even about most intresting time in there relationship - when they were close and had falling out or there last battle). I was curious about next Fantastic Beast's move after I watched first, because in fitst movie you see not only different magical animals but also how magic world looke like in US. I hoped next movies woud explore magic worlds in different places when Newt searches another magical beast. It feels like all important things are happening in Hogwarts. Even in Cursed Child - idea of Harry's son being in Slytherin could explore house that in books is filled with only evil kids or how magic world changed, but it is just "what if?" Marvel has problem with doing to many TV sows that ar cannon. I liked watching Marvel movies with my dad but when we wached new Doctor Strange move he was confused about Wanda because he doesn't watch TV series. You are expected to watch all of marvel and maybe I'm not interested in Hawkeye or heard Secret Invasion is bad so I'm not gona waste my time watching it. So now I'm not watching any marvel movie because of that
@electronics-girl

I largely agree, and I also agree that it's a complicated issue that isn't entirely one-sided. I definitely got "franchise fatigue" with Marvel long ago. Occasionally, Marvel turns out something really good, like WandaVision, but it's floating in a sea of mediocrity. And because of how tied-together the Marvel franchise is, it's hard to enjoy pieces of Marvel media by themselves, because you need to have seen 10 other movies to get all the backstory. Star Wars is not yet quite as bad as Marvel, but I do feel like the Star Wars universe is getting "overspecified", for lack of a better word. I definitely didn't need Solo. I tend to hate origin stories, because I generally like it when a character's origin is a bit mysterious. A couple of counterexamples are Star Trek and Doctor Who. Personally, I like that both of these franchises are open-ended. I'm not sure if part of the reason is that they are primarily (in the case of Star Trek) or entirely (in the case of Doctor Who) TV franchises rather than film franchises. I feel like both of these franchises are good at reinventing themselves. Star Trek series tend to be very different from each other, especially ones which are airing at the same time, or near each other in time. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is intentionally similar to Star Trek: The Original Series, but since they were made over 50 years apart, they will still feel very different. Similarly, although Dr. Who is essentially one never-ending series, it reinvents itself by regenerating the Doctor (and behind the scenes, by periodically changing the showrunner). Also, as a trans woman, thank you for your disclaimer about Harry Potter. And although donating to the Trevor Project wasn't strictly necessary, it is appreciated!

History is full of people, purposefully or not, retelling the old stories in new settings with new characters and details, just renewing the genre. But modern technology and corporate entertainment has stifled the ability for culture to allow new generations to create their own versions of works like Harry Potter or Star Wars. When copyright laws were set to run out after 95 years, no one could have imagined that something like Mickey Mouse could still be actively culturally relevant almost 100 years after its conception.

The MCU I think had a great setup at the beginning but how they continued led to a stagnant universe. Also those in charge tried to play it safe making out of character behavior and scenarios to take center stage instead of the world, the universe it is developing, to slowly become full of unimportant properties instead of interesting characters. I think it would be better for these franchises like the MCU to become animated series or a great TV series instead. In comparison to how anime does it, there is a lot of shows before a movie comes out. Disney tried that but they were too short and not a lot for the viewers to invest in, the world to develop. What I also think ruined it is how Disney/Warner Bros is trying to pump out the franchise they own way too much making the audience to become saturated with a barrage of things to watch. It's good for the investor bad for the consumer who will slowly become disinterested.

I also remember exactly where I was and how I was feeling when I finished Deathly Hallows (in my parent's suburban with a new mattress next to me). It was a story that spanned almost my whole life and it was finished. It felt good. Complete. Settled. Idk, theres something about adding more to something great that just feels wrong. Maybe the novelty of the thing wears off after the first run, so even if the additional material is decent or even good, it doesnt and never will have the "shine" of the original stuff (especially if its from childhood).

What frustrates me about this trend is that so much of what gets made in mainstream books and games and tv and movies is that they’re no longer even conceived of as art, as a complete story. That affects every decision made. You cannot have a character get hurt in the first part of an infinite series of works. You have to (especially in tv and movies) create props that can be potentially sold as toys, costumes that are recognizable and can be sold for holloween. You have to make sure that nothing gets permanently resolved, and you have to create hooks for the sequel in the story itself. All of this gets in the way of building suspense. Not just the ending, but through the whole story. If you know that you’re reading book one of a series, even if there are no other books yet, there’s zero suspense. You know that the hero will score a temporary victory that will be undone by the arrival of the next book. If a character is known to be injured canonically prior to franchise creation, that must be undone.

It's not super popular it I feel like His Dark Materials got a way better adaptation through the BBC/HBO series and it's still early days but Percy Jackson seems to be set for a better adaptation too. Your arguments don't follow. You are basicly saying that people should stop end franchises because you feel like it and project your feelings on everything else. But not everything feels like you and other people might enjoy new media greatly. You can simply not watch it. Only you are to blame for your feeling exhausted over something that you are only supposed to consume if you enjoy it.

Ongoing stories should have an ending. This is why I can't really get into comic books, as they seem to go on forever. But if a series is telling an interconnected story where you need to watch every instalment to understand what's going on, then yes, you need to have an ending in sight. However, episodic stories can go on forever. Things such as James Bond or Doctor Who are perfect candidates for franchises. And while they can still have stories that span multiple instalments, you can watch them in pretty much any order, and still get a satisfying story. Harry Potter, however, is a single story split into seven parts. You can't really read them in any order, and the majority of the backstory (and some of the future story), is explained in the books, so there's little need to make any prequels. The first Fantastic Beasts movie worked, because it was a (pretty much) self contained story set in that world, and if that were the direction they followed, I feel the movies would be better received. The same with Star Wars. From what I understand, Andor, and the first two seasons of the Mandalorian are the best things Disney has put out in that franchise; mainly because they are their own stories, with little ties to the existing properties.

All she said is sex is real, lmao. How is stating facts, harm?

They just don't like her pointing out the narcissists and exploiters using transgenderism to harm women. Which says alot more about them than her.

Nobody says that sex is not real - it's about gender. Sex is about biology, gender is a social construct - everybody defines what a woman is based on her experience, you could see woman and not even realize that she is trans, because in the end of a day you can't inspect every person's pants. But a lot of TERFs determine if you are trans that means you are predator and bring there middle school understanding of biology - because I remember learning about people with trisomy like XXY chromosomes in highschool, and learning about people who even though they are XY have female genitals, because one of gens responsible for forming male genitals is not active or missing in. People don't ignore "basic since" they expand it because saying gender is determined only by your genitals is like saying like most complex math equation is square root.

Ultimately you can't seperate the art from the artist. You're a Harry Potter superfan because J.K Rowling is just that good y'know, your love of it and it's quality are completely secondary to her talent as an author. I'm not surprised by the Harry Potter actors facile cowing to the media, regarding the trans community. As they are actors, and that requires some self involvement and self preservation when it comes to their brand. I wasn't expecting Daniel Radcliffe to share his critical thoughts on a very nuanced topic in a press junket, that's just bad PR. It's sort of like asking what Miss Universe's views on Palestine are, you think she's going to walk you through it? No, she would probably say "I think we should all just get along" Maybe J.K Rowling the accomplished writer who you obviously admire greatly, has some life experience, personal connection and is passionate about this subject. Maybe she researched this nuanced issue as thoroughly and diligently as when she was curating the Harry Potter universe. Or maybe she's just a talented terf.

If this magnificent series needs to stop because of your poor reasoning, you should stop making videos as well because of my poor reasoning.

I just have to say, brilliant work just analysing, summarising, neatly andnconcisely putting together this topic into a video, you've got another subscriber 💙 And very high respect for your recognition of the issues with discussion around HP. No matter what, it has influenced media and childhood memories massively and is a relavant point for these discussion, but discussions sadly do still tend to promote and encourage indirect support for a hateful, actively harmful bigot. And tou addressed and offset that risk perfectly with the donation, very responsible videomaking 💙 I wish so many fond memories didn't have to be corrupted by her hateful, classist, bigoted views.

What are some original works that's been good in recent years? I'll throw some out myself: Avatar (I know it released almost 15 years ago so calling it new is a bit of a stretch). Everything Everywhere All At Once John Wick Bullet Train Oppenheimer Inception Interstellar Barbie Killers of the Flower Moon The Wolf of Wall Street Pacific Rim
