I agree. Thank God for him. He didn't have to do that...he could have just minded his own business and not said a thing and his life wouldn't have changed. Since he DID say something to LE, they were able to find the guy who murdered that poor young woman. I had a person I knew, who years ago was a teacher in Hawaii (back when you didn't need credentials to teach). Her husband had died, she had 2 young kids, and when walking home from teaching late one day bc she had to stay after school for something (she couldn't afford a car), she got beat up by a mentally ill minor (he was less than 18 so couldn't be charged with much but built like a full-grown man...she felt she was set up). Anyway, she was in the hospital for a full month and several surgeries. Gotta be careful, even in paradise. Sadly, since it was her last day there, Masumi probably let her guard down, but even so. Poor young lady. Such a shame.

I've worked in Hawaii for a while, and I see that the homeless in Hawaii are different from those in big cities in the lower 48. Many homeless in Hawaii are local Hawaiians who are priced out of their homeland. Many of the locals in Hawaii that I talked to say that many of the homeless never owned land in Hawaii. Their ancestors had long ago sold their family land and never invested the money for their families, so they became renters. This made their families unstable because rents rose faster than the menial jobs they were doing paid. So many of those homeless Hawaiians live in makeshift shanties on the beaches of Hawaii, and they have made a community in these homeless encampments.

I know 2 separate people whose landlords didn’t have the fire alarms installed correctly/ up to date. One person would have slept through her house burning down if it wasn’t for a homeless person frantically knocking at her window to wake her up before she burned along with her house. The second person was away for the weekend, but had pets in the home that just barely made it out alive because an unhoused person raised the alarm and got help. Homeless people are our neighbors, and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, just like any other person in our community- home or no home.

If the judge thought the case warranted it, he should have given 50 years before parole, not just giving such a long sentence to keep him inside. That's what sentencing guidelines are for after all. I disagree. He does research the killer deeply, but I find it funny how the narrator has a huge pro women bias. If a man kills a woman he's automatically a monster a liar and evil, despite not having irrefutable evidence nor motive against him, like this case. If a woman kills a man then no matter how much evidence and motive she has, he always tries to make excuses and for her and reason as to why she did it, almost absolving her. That's some daddy issues.

I've always disliked when people make shorts about crime cases and all they do is parrot what a news report says, but you're so much different. You actually dig and are going through multiple sources for the best and more accurate information. This helps to actually spread knowledge because when you just read a single news report that report can be bias or they make wrong assumptions too quickly. You're doing a great job at compiling research to be understandable and bringing light to cases. We learn about lossed loved ones and we learn about people who have done wrong. May you keep up this great work. I personally believe the good from these cases is teaching people how to avoid danger because it makes you think more. I think that does a lot.

The fact that he either won't fess up to where her body really is, or he did put her out to sea and SOMEHOW she didn't come back in... He did something horrible to her. If he didn't, telling her parents where to find her would prove this, and possibly lighten his sentence. He knows he's screwed, so he's not talking. The poor girl.

@@Dessamator Have you ever seen the list of things women can't do at night alone no matter what the hour? Except this happened during the day. Men find it shocking. Things they can do or go anytime without worrying about their safety but we definitely have to. (Barring the LGBTQ+ community.) I live in a safe neighbourhood but.... danger can come to us.

The sheer strength and nobility that these parents hold to even say that they bow to him and only humbly ask for their daughter’s remains to be returned to them. It can tear anyone apart just knowing this. Thanks Adrian, for once again shining light into a very distressing case. I hope the best for the family and that they soon find closure

as an autistic US citizen whose mom let them start traveling alone in metropolitan, out of state areas at 15-16, knowing the tough skin i had to build up in order to keep moving and feel safe in all the chaos of the city.......this is just gutwrenching. for years, i had felt like my mom was just a little beyond a reasonable level of protectiveness, even through all the unsavory moments that built that tough skin - and i'm starting to wonder if my interest in true crime is cosmically designed just to break that whole notion down. not even a third of the way in & i'm fussing out loud about this poor kid; too many young people are so violently punished just for wanting to seek knowledge and grow and explore beautiful places. i'm only 4 years older now than masumi was, and i'm just sitting here wringing my hands. it wrecks me that this happens so goddamn much. may this brilliant, sweet girl rest in peace.

A pleasant, a lovely, a family-church-going man who often hosted bible studies - yet a man with a dark and twisted mindset. These are the most dangerous types of predators because they charm their way and get victims to drop their guard. His sentence was just right. Let him rot in a prison cell. May the family of Masumi one day recover her remains and find some measure of peace.

Her mother's word bewildered me. I can imagine ppl from my culture would express the request to know where the victim's remain is in a way that's like "we are entitled to know where my beloved family member's remain is", and I don't think many people would express it in such humble way. I'm speechless.
