This is Hanachirusato, a channel dedicated to retelling Japanese historical stories in an epic style, reimagining the legends of the Sengoku, Bakumatsu, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras with a modern perspective.
Contrary to what you might expect, while being a samurai was indeed a form of feudal privilege, it was within reach of commoners due to the competitive nature of the time. It was more an extension of the ruling class and provided a way for commoners to become samurai. During the Sengoku period, an era of turmoil and upheaval, it was relatively easy for individuals with talent to rise to prominence. People with abilities could find opportunities to become samurai, given the right circumstances. Oda Nobunaga, for example, began as a sandal-bearer and rose to become a unifier of Japan.
In this era of fierce competition, even a commoner had a chance to make a name for themselves, although it required the right timing and strategy. While the "Warrior Salaryman" series delves deeper into the systems and work of various samurai clans, today, we'll discuss some simple and interesting examples. We'll look at cases where commoners managed to become samurai without going into great detail. This can be an inspiration for those who might find themselves in a similar situation if they were to time travel and become samurai. This is Hanachirusato, the channel where I interpret Japanese history and legends. Don't forget to like and subscribe.
