We retell the stories of Japanese history in the style of historical dramas, reshaping the legends of the Warring States, Bakumatsu, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras through a modern lens.
In this episode, we'll discuss the topic of "rice yield," which you've probably heard about quite a few times in my videos. You may have seen discussions in the comments section about what a daimyo's rice yield could support in terms of the number of troops. For example, during the Battle of Okehazama, Imagawa Yoshimoto was said to have a yield of 800,000 koku, and if you mention he marched with only 10,000 troops, many Sengoku enthusiasts would say you're underestimating the Imagawa army. On the other hand, if you say Oda Nobunaga had 400,000 koku and marched with 5,000 troops, many would say you're overestimating his forces. Yet, it's essentially just a measure of the land's value within a certain domain. So why is there so much controversy around the definition of rice yield? Why is there such an inaccurate relationship between rice yield and military strength? And how many "million-koku daimyo" were there in reality, and why did they become synonymous with great power in the narratives of Japan's Warring States period? Today, we'll delve into this topic. This is Hanachirusato, a channel that reinterprets Japanese history and its legends, so don't forget to like and subscribe.
