ishamael is the betrayer of hope, woops. samael is the "destroyer of hope"
@kght222

seriously it is in the first prologue of the first book. ishamael even says "so men have named me" and i'm pretty sure that means that his name in the old tongue means "betrayer of hope". i've noticed over the years that several people think that samael is the betrayer of hope, perhaps he is a betrayer of something, the name similarity and the likelyhood that both of their names mean something in the old tongue, just as lews therin's last name "telamon" means "the dragon". but ishamael is definately named betrayer of hope in the very first scene in the series.

Could you imagine a show set in the Age of Legends starting after the bore is sealed, and from the intimate perspective of a group of male channelers that are trying to survive the breaking, and have to fight off people like a post apolalyptic survival type of feel, and as we get to know these characters more and more and they maybe do some actions in a moral grey zone but the general vibe is that theyre in the right. And as the series progresses we get flashbacks to the whole history from the video where we start with the perfect society where Aes'Sedai are kinda like celebrities and we could see all of the interesting culture differences and an actual working utopia up until the point where the bore is drilled. And from there we see gradual and subtle effects in a narrative context of the influence of the dark one. And then you have this perspective from like a happy family at dinner watching an interview of a famous and well renowned Aes'sedai like that interview scene from The Boys with Translucent, and all the sudden they're like yeah i'm a bad guy now and they all the Forsaken start showing up and chaos and we see Lews Therin sealing up the bore with his homies and then the beginning of the breaking of the world. And then we get caught up with our original cast of survivors, and at the very end of the series they all just die and the style of the show visually changes and we are shown that the whole time the main male Aes'Sedai were completely insane and had been killing and destroying like all of the others but we were seeing the perspective from their minds where they actually believed they were in the right and their actual perception of others and their surroundings was tainted.

It’s been about 12 years since I’d last re-read the series and I’d mistakenly thought Lews Therin alone had been responsible for the Breaking, sort of a cascade effect that started with the formation of Dragonmount. I’d also wondered how Lews Therin went so insane that he became the Kinslayer and why no one could stop him. It makes perfect sense that his insanity was instant due to his proximity to the bore. This will really help my understanding of the story in my current reading, not only for the clarity on the Age of Legends, but it also will help me understand the decisions Rand makes during the Last Battle and the events that precede it. So thanks for the illumination and the trip down Amnesia Lane.

The story of the Fall always makes me sad. Jordan did a great job with building this tragedy. Here humans work so hard and we do it: we make paradise... only to have it all ripped away by curiosity and the same power that helped us build paradise in the 1st place. (I know the One Power =/= the True Power but they're...adjacent). And even then after 100s of years of strife and pain we make it to the cusp of victory only to have it all torn down - this time permanently with the Breaking. Such a tragic end for those people.
@gunblade7610
2 жыл бұрын
Interestingly it mimics the Abrahamic tale of paradise loss. Garden of Eden has paradise, two trees - tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, hubris pushes the people to go to the source of knowledge/power that they were not meant to go with, people now have the knowledge of wicked ways when previously they had only the knowledge of good ways. It hits certain beats that apparently resonates with so many adherents of Abrahamic faiths and the cultures influenced by those faiths - perhaps there is something primordial about this idea of paradise loss that resonates with the human condition and thus makes it so universal to people wether you say it's people leaving Eden or the Age of Legends ending. I'm not so much thinking Jordan is providing allegory similar to C.S. Lewis or even more stealthily like Tolkien, but rather his study of cultures probably sees a common vein and that is what makes the writing so great. Tl;Dr: Great stories rhyme 😀

I think everyone assumes he is and everyone might be right, but the loss of Sammael to the Shadow was a huge blow, and the prophecies are confusing in the context of labeling Ishmael as he. Remember it is noted many times that the prophecies aren't always what you think they are until they happen and only then will you have a clue even if you are even aware that that particular prophecy is fulfilled. Not saying that he's wrong or he's right. I believe he's wrong, but in the right context he could be correct.

First of all, the breaking of the world never really ended- it continues throughout the third age and into the fourth in the land of the Mad Men Second, a good idea of what the Breaking of the World might have looked like in the beginning might be demonstrated in the Roland Emmerich movie "2012" (although it slaps the disaster onto the world of the First Age, not the Second, and doesn't mention supernatural powers). One might also try looking at movies showing the sinking of Atlantis and books like Stephen Baxter's "Moonseed" (which has the earth destroyed in a seismic manner by grey goo).

It's weird that Callandor was created prior to the breaking of the world. Its specific nature as a S'angreal for the true power as well as having no safeguards make it pivotal at the final battle. Neither of those characteristics make much sense as something that a good Aes Sedai would make without specific foreknowledge. If it was made before the breaking, does that mean its creator foresaw the need for such a S'angreal?

I have always had one problem with The Breaking of the World. We’re shown that there were discrete units of Age of Legends survivors, who did things like charge the Di’shain Aiel w/ carrying thousands of Angreals, Sa’angreals, and important Ter’angreals “Somewhere Safe.” We see that a group of male and female Aes Sedai gave their lives setting up the Eye of the World. Finally, we see a group of channelers whose #’s were unknown persisting long enough to create the Stone of Tear. Did *no one* give any thought whatsoever to trying to preserve important things (Like Weave-Lore, an ignorance-to-working-understanding archive of scientific principles, etc et)? I mean, Elayne & Nyneave recover a library Ter’angreal of Fiction/Non-Fiction, estimated to contain many thousands of discrete works, so we know they had such data-storage Ter’angreals that were usable by anyone. Now, I hear you object, “Hold up, the world was ending all around these people! Of course they didn’t have the time and resources to do that kind of thing. It took everything the AOL-survivors had just to set up the Eye & Stone!” To which I respond: “Stasis Boxes already existed, and the Forsaken managed to find a total of *eight* , possibly *nine* if Sammeal’s speculation about where Grendel found the color-changing-with-wearer’s-mood-fabric (Streith) was accurate. Nine time-capsules from the Age of Legends, found in 28 months, by 12 Forsaken (Ishamael already had his super-stocked Fortress of Eviltude), who had tons of demands on their time preventing full-time stasis-box-hunting. When I first read the series, I kept waiting for a scene like, a farmer whose crops aren’t growing due to the unnatural weather turned to hunting to keep his family fed, and, going out into the woods the day after a big storm, found a weird box the size of a refrigerator, with just one corner sticking out of the ground beneath a great old oak that toppled in the storm. Seemed to me like something that might happen to Perrin, as long as the plot kept him cooling his heels. Always seemed weird to me, is all, that no one seemed to take thought for preparing anything beyond the Dragon himself. Did the AoL channelers really think ignorant apocalypse survivors would be able to deal with the Dark One way, way down the line?

By the time the taint on saidin was discovered, hundreds more male Aes Sedai had been driven mad, and what remained of civilization after the war itself had fallen into chaos. Maybe I'm misremembering, or I misread things, but I'm fairly certain the books make the War Power last FAR longer than 10 years. During Rand's walk through the Crystal Pillars, as the grandson of the Aiel that served Mierin, (always loved that Rand's greatx12 grand-dad was Lanfear's landscaper,) the one watching the singing and the Nym, talks to a soldier, and the soldier is stunned the war is over, because he was born into the military, and had no idea what the future meant, and was envious in a way, of the Aiel. Also, I'm sure that Birgitte served under Lews Therin Telamon in two separate lives, and this involved her interactions with Moghedien. There's the scope of the War, which was global, involving billions, but starting with both sides having next to no knowledge. It is clear that the War of Power's warfare started out at ancient to medieval levels, but advanced to modern. Regardless of how quick technology advanced however, note that Myrdraal and Trollocs are never mentioned to use Age of Legends level military tech, despite the Shadow's forces having access to them. Sammael bemoans the lack of shocklances, for example. Finally, just the way the Forsaken act and talk about the War of Power, how many Forsaken, for example, there actually were during the War of Power and how many were given access to the True Power, it just speaks to a way longer war than this timeline suggests. I could probably have just looked the shit up, but I'd rather vomit my instantaneous reaction onto your comments page. Love the channel.
