The only part that disappoints me is how hard people react to critique. No, critique is actually something I did in school. Didn’t matter if I liked a person delivering a speech, my assignment was to analyze the stong and weak points in the speech, and yes, I remember writing a critique of Pride and Prejudice, which isn’t a novel I would read over and over, but my critique or criticism of that novel was that Mister Bennett was the villain in the story for being so passive if not hiding behind others instead of speaking up for his family. Critique isn’t hatred.

Easily the most frustrating thing this show did is vindicate idiots who think fallout 4 was good, cause apparently everyone and their grandma loves the fallout show. Its just further driving a wedge between what fallout is versus what it was, and unless someone else makes a fallout game and fights tooth and nail for creative control we'll likely never get old fallout again. It drives me absolutely insane being called a "fake fan" or a hater for criticizing the show or fallout 4, despite the fact that they forget that there are 2 numbers before 3, and they're the best of the franchise, possibly even 2 of the best RPGs of all time

Absolutely. Bethesda made Fallout a sarcastic parody of the original games. The original games were a bleak cruel realistic world with comedic elements to lighten the vibe. About Maximus, the issue wasn’t writing about making Maximus a bad person, the issue was that the plot either hand waved or condoned his actions. The issue with writing today is that people only write “superficial flaws” in characters. They don’t write solid character flaws. True character flaws have consequences and are a hindrance, or at least make it more difficult than necessary for the character to achieve his or her goals. The flaw in the character has to materialize and impact the character in their journey, or else the “flaw” is not genuine. I don’t consider The Marvel Movies masterpieces by any stretch, but a good case of an actual character flaw in those movies, especially the early Iron Man movies, was Tony Stark being an alcoholic. He turned to drinking hard as a coping mechanism for dealing with his parents’ deaths. Unfortunately for him, his heavy drinking is how he got into trouble and a hindrance to him that allowed his enemies to get as far as they did. I don’t see Iron Man movies as great, just saying that they made Tony Stark’s addiction issues an actual flaw to him as a character. You could also use “incriminating” to describe Maximus because that’s exactly what Maximus does. He incriminates himself or makes himself appear pretty guilty. I feel you have great points, but a little better vocabulary helps a bit in delivering your message.

The thing about Maximus' character arc is that S1 is pretty much entirely a setup for him to develop in S2, which while not bad when the show is taken as a whole after the next season releases, definitely hinders his character as of now. Maximus' journey I think is that he really does have everything go his way. Despite his constant failures and selfishness, he's still praised as a hero and a great figure in the brotherhood in the end, but as he gets more positive recognition, he starts to realize that he doesn't actually want what he previously thought he wanted. In S2, I suspect the writers will aim for a contrast between what he is on the outside, and what he feels on the inside, though again it's hard to praise the execution because we obviously haven't seen it yet.

I think the eventual decay of brain tissue paired with the inevitable insanity from post apocalypse and living for hundreds of year makes total sense. Pair this with cannibalism which causes “mad cow disease” which basically gives you super dementia. If you had those but still didn’t die while rotting it makes for one of the most grounded “zombies” in any IP I’ve seen. Bethesda just became obsessed with FEV and things being monsters instead of freakish realistic horror and I think a lot of the confusion stems from there.
@AdrianFahrenheitTepes

@@Sublime_Light Right, feral ghouls was a concept started by Bethesda that had potential. I say potential because if a ghoul can lose its reasoning and feast on your flesh then there’s a genuine moral dilemma there because the ghoul is essentially a rabid animal or ticking time bomb. I’m also surprised how wasted the potential of the Synths was in Fallout 4. Synths just need to be told their ID number and they will obey, that makes a Synth a walking weapon of mass destruction since they can be ordered with their ID number to go become an assassin or terrorist but of course the Bethesda Brotherhood of Steel was too stupid to ever bring this up. I’m not saying the Brotherhood is good, they aren’t and are arguably a discount Enclave but the synth being programmed into a killer is a point that I am surprised did not get brought up in Fallout 3 or 4.

Went into your video with an open mind as a middle of the ocean of lore swimmer, and definitely understand the points you are making. I generally choose to stay away from the Reddit/review world in general to get my own opinions in order first. I couldn’t help but think Maximus was a p***y the entire show…even with the attempted forced sympathy card of losing his family to a nuke. It would have made more sense if that experience would have hardened him, and waaaay better at fooling the Brotherhood if his ultimate goal was to undermine them. The problem with adapting something like this to a TV show is like you said in your video, it has to appeal to a larger audience. In the games, they play heavily into the difficulty in choosing sides and the consequences/rewards that come along with it. In the show they don’t really give you a choice of who to root for. It makes sense now why the director was so firm about not wanting to please the video game deep diving fans specifically. I liked your take on the Ghoul thing too. I was confused about this mystery liquid they put in there. It makes sense that they would want to keep The Ghoul’s eyes colorful and skin “clean,” but adding this liquid just muddies the water. I feel like it would have made more sense if they just kept it in line with Eddie Winter from F4 or something like that. I liked the show, but mostly because I’m choosing to see it as somewhat canon rather than law. I’m curious to see in another 20 years when the next game comes out, how much of the show will be of impact. Either way, and in summary, great video bro…you definitely got a subscribe out of me!

I agree and disagree on your rant about Maximus. Very awful written character but other than the fact he tried to immediately murder Thaddeus instead of explaining what happened to Titus, he’s not a psychopath. Maximus problem is that he is written like a tragic underdog character but with no good qualities in his introduction. In my opinion, that’s the biggest problem with this show, the introduction to each character is just so god awful that it makes it hard to like any character at first. (The first episode is easily the worst) Maximus is supposed to be this tragic character but there’s such thing as being too tragic. Let’s sum up his introduction. He gets beaten up, has manure duty (whatever it is called), teacher makes him an idiot in front of everyone, his only friend gets promoted while he gets manure duty again, and then he has a fit of rage. And then Maximus’ friend who got promoted is sabotaged and Maximus is the first person to be questioned, then he gets blindfolded and interrogated. Through all of that Maximus isn’t shown to be strong, resilient, intelligent, or dedicated. Instead he’s showed to be a stuttering mess. He has no good qualities at this point so you don’t root for him. Too many tragic things happen to him to the point you lose immersion and remember that someone wrote all of that to happen. He does end up having some decent qualities later on by being nice to Thaddeus after Thaddeus says one nice thing about Maximus, then Maximus saves Thaddeus becomes friends for a bit with him, saves Lucy, then tries to save Lucy again when she’s being taken to be exiled while she is blindfolded and screaming for help which is why he stole the fusion core in the first place. Too bad the writers thought about trying to imitate smiling friends humor by throwing curve ball but only ended up dropping all tension and making one of their main characters look like an idiot, again.

I recently talked to a family member about the show. He has no knowledge of the series, (which is fine, he isn't a gamer) but he used to do some form of work in Hollywood, and apparently visited Bethesda studios on a tour for something related to the show. Anyway, we got into a discussion about the show and i started talking about the lore inconsistencies, and the poor writing choices, and I was baffled by his responses and rationalizations. "Oh it's an adaptation. They can write what they want." If they wanted to write what they wanted, they should have put it in a setting none of the games had done, with brand new factions they can write as they please, without messing with the BoS and NCR. "It's not possible to make a direct, accurate adaptation of the games story. They have to change things for TV." It is possible, and it isn't hard. And if it is so hard, you'd probably get better creative freedom creating your own thing within the FO universe, or just creating your own thing separate from FO. "It's their show, they can do what they want." It's somebody else's IP with pre-established lore that they would do well to follow. And then the funniest interaction I had that day. "The original creators are heavily involved in the show." "Interplay?" "Bethesda." "They didn't create Fallout!" He looked like he had seen a ghost.

Great review man, nice to see the minority of us fans actually speaking our points to these masses, I really think this show is getting bit reviews and support and censoring fan opinions. The mass majority of people seem to not care or know about the lore from the first games and/or just love this sitcom quirky bullshit but whatever this show is, it’s not what Fallout is about. A movie i recommend people watch is A Boy and His Dog from 1975. That movie to me is the BEST representation of what Fallout can be on the big screen. I’m pretty sure this movie helped inspire the games and it’s more as well…. Definitely recommend it and everyone should check it out. It’s here on KZitem I think

I’ll check out the boy and his dog. Sounds gnarly. If you haven’t i recommend mad max 2 road warrior. In interviews they say when they made the original fallout that movie was playing on repeat in their offices. It’s a very good watch.

"Finn with Power Armor" - you nailed it with that description. I wish they would have gave that character more integrity and then have consequences for trying to uphold a standard when faced with the reality of the wasteland. I'm certain they took the wacky violence success from "The Boys" live action and applied a similar veneer to this story.

YES! I was almost immediately reminded of Finn! I do think Maximus felt bad for treating the fellow squire that way after the fasct when it turns out he was bullied too. But he should have as you not revealed it the worst way possible to Thaddeus. I dont get incel vibes at all, he doesnt treat Lucy that way. But i agree with most of your poiints about Maximus. I was really hoping to have a better representative of the BOS than the hateful comic relief. The retcon of ghouls? Dont get me started!!! Such bullshit! Dude i really hate they just wiped out the NCR off screen. I still think Todd Howard hates the comparison to his games and wanted to wipe it out with bitterness and jelousy, they guy has a shit ego. That plot could have happened ANYWHERE!!! And the ONLY reason was a tieback to Hollywood for the ghoul's story and to wipe out the NCR.

I agree for the most part. I'm surprised you didn't really bring up Vault 4. Both the Master would have taken it over and the fact that there's some sort of silly trap door in a derelict hospital that leads to it. Who built the trap door? If it was always there, the occupants of the vault would be ghouls. If it was new construction, why? And how would an idealistic vault survive with a giant front door and wide open trap door with the existence of both the master and general raider parties? I'm also surprised you didn't bring up the absolute stupidity of the rationale behind the vault experiments and the cause of the bombs falling from the show. Like some company is going to pay the price of a vault to lock one man in with a crate of puppets. The weird trio of Vaults is also dumb. What's better than 3 vaults connected to each other? One vault that's as big as three vaults connected to each other. Less weird BS that way. The original Vault, Vault 13, had an elevator (as did 15, it's "sister vault" that was DAYS travel away on foot). You gonna tell me they hadn't mastered the technology of "locked floors"? Past criticisms, now on to shouldas: This series should have followed a single protagonist, and it should have been Walton Goggins as he's got the most chops to be able to carry the show. He should have been the Vault Dweller. They should have came up with a better reason than "go find a family member" for the N+1th time to push him into the wasteland. It would have been interesting to have someone from another vault come in under false pretenses and steal the vault's water chip, for example. A nod to the first game without being a carbon copy of the start. He could have come into contact with raiders, villages, BoS, the Enclave, etc and we see those entities through his eyes. All for nothing. As is, they should have had The Ghoul addicted to Jet if he's addicted to anything. Maybe Psycho too. The problem is they don't want to depict drugs granting superpowers (though they do via Fallout canon), and just want to show the downsides of them. It would even explain how he's so good at combat. To be more cynical, he's a white hetero male so we need to have his face burned off and make him weak in some easy way... Let's say he's pathetic unless he gets some magic urine pumped in his veins. How would the entire population of ghouls get easy access to magic urine for 200 years? Maybe a dude who bangs chickens can make it out of trash he finds in the wastes. But then how is it precious/hard to find? It's just that one dude lol. Nobody else knows the secret of ghoulification. So is he a ghoul? No you should stop asking questions now so I don't have to make anything else up. As someone who started with the Black Isle Fallouts, I've never loved anything Bethesda did wholeheartedly. New Vegas was OK but not quite as open as I would like. A proper version of Bethesda Fallout would have been a marriage of the best of New Vegas (strong core story and faction play that Obsidian did a good job writing) and Fallout 3 (big map with tons of unrelated minor encounters and general wasteland weirdness). But that's tangential. Just an explanation of what *kind* of Fallout fan I am.

Exactly it's very much fan made level of production. There are dome youtubers that have made this level of production shorts. It's embarrassing. Most likely the budget is very low which explains why the show focuses on fan service instead of general audience. It's actually worse in production than the Last Of Us. It'd essentially fallout 76 live action from their trailer release they did. Ultimately it is 76 direct port. It's a massive memorabilia masturbation for the soft consumer of Bethesda players.

My biggest problem with this show is the characters and their introductions. I already made a comment about Maximus. Lucy is written like a stand-in for every vault dweller. They made it very clear that vault dwellers would be very naive to the surface but Jesus not every single interaction has to be a reminder of that. Lucy has no absolutely no character or personality traits compared to every other vault dweller. She doesn’t evolve at all. Well, she does have one character trait, she wants to have sex. She isn’t written disgustingly horny. She’s written more like “can you help me lose my virginity, please” which is literally her introduction. I don’t understand why they didn’t just simply give her the goal of finding love. For Cooper, I hate when he’s a ghoul. Looks way too good and kills 80% of the people that are in the same shot as him. He’s not a cool badass like they try to make him out to be. A literal murderous psychopath is what he is. I gathered he’s supposed to be this urban legend ghoul gunslinger.. that got locked in a coffin for god knows how long and then only end up to having more plot armor than Lucy. When he’s human it’s more interesting, his conflict about freedom vs survival. Cooper looking into the conspiracy of Vault Tec along with Norm looking into Vault 31 & 32 are probably my plot lines in the show.
@benjaminkemer6428

Tragedy in the past isn’t a condoning of a person’s actions in the present. You could write in something where Maximus has a coping mechanism that makes him less than he could be. Perhaps one example I can think of is Tony Stark in the Marvel films, almost every problem of Tony was due to his out of control drinking as an alcoholic. Sure his parents were killed in the car crash but his heavy drinking coping mechanism wasn’t condoned by the story in the present.

The show felt exactly on brand following fallout 4 - contrived and whimsical storytelling with loopholes and contradictions and retcons woven throughout every single plot point. In fallout 4 I dreaded engaging in dialogue with any npc as I knew they were about to spill something jarringly non-sensical enough to bring me out of the post-nuclear apocalypse immersion, prompting me to go on a chem-induced killing spree that is more believable storytelling. Shame that the amount of essential characters halt me in my tracks, inhibiting player expression. Engaging with any quest invokes the sense of Todd and Emil pressing a gun to my head and telling me to be a good dog and get back on their dilapidated one-way railroad track amusement park ride - or else. I think they nailed the show, all aesthetic - negative substance. Look guys, a T-60 power armor, that's so cool, I think my erectile dysfunction just got cured by this DEI-approved slop!

I’m pretty sure cooper does still have to eat and drink considering the ass jerky scene and the when he drinks in sandy shores, despite also doing it to be an ass. Either way I’m sure they’ll explain it more in the future. I honestly don’t believe Thaddeus was actually turned into a ghoul but maybe a super mutant or something else except he hasn’t changed completely. But it’s not out of nowhere I mean look at Hancock. Maximus is not irredeemable at all, he literally acts selflessly by telling Thaddeus to go back and saves him immediately after he gets caught in the gulper’s mouth. The beginning where he bullies Thad isn’t even that bad considering the standard they showed. Any explanation of how Titus died would not have passed the speech check because it would involve the part where he let him die. Maximus is clearly an in the moment thinker, just not that great at it. If anything he’s just more insecure and stunted in some aspects of anything. His “psychotic” use of his power armor in the vault is literally just him trying to protect Lucy. If he was a psycho he’d crush people like he did the one guy’s head. Dude has plenty of noble moments that would turn him away from being “evil”. Maximus literally explained that the head thing was to distract the brotherhood from Lucy, him not wanting to die afterwards is only natural. He became a knight because the sight was him being praised at the one who secured them cold fusion and killed the leader of the opposing group, not that hard to understand. Those vaults could’ve easily been hidden/inaccessible in between 2161 and lucy’s mom went outside of it. Definitely plausible the master didn’t find vault 33 like other vaults. Even with the “faults” you’ve mentioned there is plenty of good material throughout the show. Also you sound like a cynical edgelord with an epicnate315/penguinz0 mixed accent lol and this comes off as one big hate post. Ironically it does sound like “toxic fanboy seething” with a conceited and sarcastic outlook. Any change like about the ghouls could easily be chalked up to something they haven’t explained yet o, a different understanding of what’s already available or just something new. It’s not that big a deal in any way. Especially considering they can’t delve into every bit of lore in 8 episodes. The show does not shit on the lore and you’re just stubborn and offended. If nothing changed by the time the show ended sure I could see some of this. But for an introductory season you acknowledged, is to appeal to the widest audience, it did its job.

No, having limbs actually blown off in Fallout 3, NV, and Fallout 4 occurs when an NPC or the Player dies. Having crippled limbs, meaning the arm or leg is broken or in severe pain, is not the same thing. I mean if your character has to get some kind of prosthetic leg or arm because they lost the arm could be a thing, if Synths are compatible with biological people, maybe mechanical or human looking prosthetic limbs could be made based on Synth technology.

Just because you thought a character was a dick doesn't make it bad writing. You raise good points of times when there actually was bad writing. But I think you make a mistake of falsely interpreting the writers intentions with Maximus. Because he clearly isn't supposed to be seen as a good guy. He's a morally gray anti hero. The show wanted you to question whether or not he was someone who would harm his friend. Why else would that be in the show other than to sew distrust of the character. It also wanted to show that he's someone who isn't above facilitating a murder. As the show progresses, you see him slowly start to become less selfish and more protective of the ones around him., first with thadeus. After spending time with Thaddeuos, the two begin to warm up to each other and Maximus thinks he can trust him. When Thadues turns on him, he puts back up his metaphorical and physical armour (literally closing his helmet) and goes back to trying to solve the issue with violence. Later he runs into Lucy, and as he warms up to her he become protective of her, as she is someone who relies on him and also sees good in him. He steals the power core and attacks the vault dwellers because he thinks someone he cares for is in danger. The root of his character is that he is a lonely orphan who just wants individuals in his life that he can trust not to leave him or stab him in the back. I actually think the character is well written. I think some of the plot points of the show are bad, but characters were thought out well. And personally, I like this style of story telling where every faction and protagonist can be seen as morally gray at times.
