Fun fact about that ramp drift: The producers and effects team tried several ways to make it look realistic, including towing it up on rails. One of the stunt drivers, Rhys Millen - soon to be the reigning champion of the American Formula Drift Circuit - looked at it and said "I could probably do that." He tried once, and that's the shot that's in the movie. Edit: per the DVD commentary.

Compare this film to the last two (especially 2 Fast 2 Furious) and Tokyo Drift just looks leagues better, even though I'm pretty sure the budget was smaller. Studio was wise to invest in him.

True. Han was such a popular character they brought him back to life (kinda) twice. Obviously they got past his death originally with it being prequels to this one but somehow they brought him back for the most recent one which I can’t remember how. He’s a solid character but also the most clear example that nobody is ever truly dead in the series if fans like them enough to have them back. Wouldn’t surprise me if they somehow find a way to bring Giselle back for this next one honestly. At this point there’s no realism to be had anymore so might as well LOL

Plus of all the movies in the franchise currently out, it has arguably the most memorable title by virtue of having a subtitle that you won't confuse for the other movies. Also the title isn't vague, most of the other movies have vague word-soup titles made up of various combinations of "furious" and "fast" and whatever, this one is called "Tokyo Drift" and that's exactly what it's about.

I live in a "developing country", and I have never been to a movie theater. Our movie consumption was mostly through satellite dish, DVDs & VHS, yes VHS. So me and my young brother, upon encouragement by our sister, we went to the only modern movie theater at the city we live. Once we got there, we felt out of place, since most of the people and kids there were "privileged". We didn't even know what do to. We were like "we are here to see movie"😆 So our first movie at the movie theater was one of those Ice age movie, I Forget which sequel. So it was a new experience for us. Now, this is where Tokyo Drift comes in if you are still reading this dissertation. For the second time, I went to see Tokyo Drift, which was my first live action movie on the theater. Boy, it was a very good time, still remember it to this day, the movie is most enjoyable on the big screen with all of its drifting etc etc. So once I started getting online, I was sort dismayed with the dismissal the movie was getting.Remember this movie sort brought drifting to the mainstream. Personal I really want another fast movie set in Japan with Lucas Black, whom I feel is criminally sidelined in the Franchise. Let end my dissertation here, O could go on and on.

This is my favorite one in the entire franchise entirely for the fact that it is the only one that is mostly street racing centric and also the street racing is by far the best in the franchise. Driving straight down one road and using NOS to make or break a race isn't exactly compelling, but this added elements of actual driving skill. Also I'm a Japanese car fanatic cause I'm a fucking weirdo and seeing a bunch of period-correct JDM cars racing around car parks and the mountains is more interesting to me than heists or stealing DVD players or being an undercover cop for 3 movies.

Watched it for the first time and loved it. It works great as its own story and the cameo at the end feels earned knowing much longer the series has gone with vin diesel. I'm a N.E.R.D. fan so the music was one of my favourite parts.

The weirdest part about Lucas Black is that he came back years later for Fast and Furious 7, playing the same high schooler, despite being about 9 years older

Tokyo Drift gets slept on which is to be quite frank, a grave injustice. The drift races are far more interesting and cool than stupid 10 second races where you hit the nos button at the right time. Also that track by the Terriyaki Boys slaps to this day

So the protagonist gets into trouble in his home town and gets sent to a far away place to live with a relative. Does this film start out like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air?

Here's a bit of trivia, for all of the drifting scenes they brought in a driver who's considered the actual Grandmaster of Drifting, like he literally mastered and popularized drifting. During the scenes where he was doing Lucas Black's drifts he had trouble convincingly drifting like an amateur.

This has always been my favorite Fast and Furious movie. Plus, my high school alma mater is the one where the events that inspired "Better Luck Tomorrow" occurred which Han came from. So I practically grew up in a Fast and Furious movie, which my driving back then mirrored and my friends would attest.

I like this one alot more than some of the recent ones. Still grounded and car focused, not ridiculous scenarios after ridiculous scenarios and family this, family that. Blechhhhhhh.
