1952 Jean Jacques Fiechter (Blancpain) was a SCUBA enthusiast befriended with René Paul Jeanneret (Rolex) at the Cannes dive club - France. That's how the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms came first (1952) directly followed by the Rolex Submariner (1953)... although Panerai had the Radiomir in 1941...

Not sure. Sub is a really good watch but unfortunately Rolex is victim of its own fame. Wearing Rolex means first question is usually "is it real one"? And it's too obvious watch, watch for somebody who has money but no finesse. FF is too big and chunky but Bathyscaphe, that is something that fits the bill just nicely. They should work on clasp, though. Toolfree fine adjustment and such things, they should be common even on bracelets with butterfly clasps. Look what Overseas and new Santos did , brilliant.

The 40 mm version of the modern Fifty Fathoms must wear like a dream with those short lugs. How come the red color on the second hand doesn't go all the way up to the circle? I see a lot of watches (from other brands as well) that are like that too. The manufacturers can produce everything else such high precision, how come the tip of the second hand looks a bit sloppy? The end bit of the color is not that sharp. (5:17) like the Rolex GMT hand. I am sure it isn’t visible unless we look at it with a magnifying lens or something I don't have much knowledge on watches either. Is there a historical thing about this, or manufacturing limitations? Just wondering.

I've always liked the look of the tribute to milspec version, except maybe that the indices are obviously painted on as opposed to applied (guess this is more historically accurate). I think the bezel really sets it apart, though it ironically looks like it needs to be babied more than a ceramic bezel. Could be wrong. Between the impeccable finishing, display caseback, and the fact that one probably won't see it as often as a sub, it definitely gets my vote.

Burkhold St. Rudderberg Dude, Longines and Rolex both created watches with bezels in 1930s. To be more precise Rolex had their watches with bezels in 1937 named Rolex Zerographe. Rolex also assisted Panerai with their watch production to Royal Italian Navy in 1930s too, which served as professional diving watches. FF just merely made it to the market first as diving watch by stealing design of others coupled with some marketing tricks.
