With Breath of the Wild, it was a game-changing, genre-defining piece of art. With Tears of the Kingdom, it's a sequel to that game-changing, genre-defining piece of art. In my opinion, it didn't need to reinvent the wheel. Just as the world in Breath of the Wild changed over the course of 5 years, so did the gaming industry as a whole. People have become tired of their franchises going on the open-world train, and that makes sense (ubisoft did this the most lol). Tears of the Kingdom also went against a very stacked year of great games, which admittedly Breath of the Wild did as well, but I think 2023 had a far greater amount than 2017. I wanna re-play Tears of the Kingdom again soon (just haven't found the time), and I reccommend you do the same. It might be more of a memorable experience for the both of us. Love the topical-content my man keep up the grind.

Played it twice 455 hours. Just reporting numerics. I still find it lacking and a 10/10. Your first sentence is beautiful and very correct. TOTK lost that. There are ways it could’ve regained it but it’s over now 😢😅. It’s a lesson well learned. I’m trying to think of a movie example. All the elements are there, the talent is there, ah yes, it’s the story :D it’s too close, it’s not enough. As amazing as Ganondorfs arch is it too is not enough. In fact, what’s the worse thing Link goes through what loss exactly beyond Zelda falling and clearly warping elsewhere? There’s not enough. It feels like a fan service fun ride. In fact I’d love to go on a monorail all around there and tour it bc it feels like a ride and not in a good way. It’s a remarkable game even in the sense of games as a case study. Super team sports teams come to mind. Amazing on paper. Pretty amazing in action. But not that era defining champion.

I do kinda feel this, but not to the same extent as you. I still do think about Tears of the Kingdom from time to time, and I plan to replay it once I have the time (which won't be any time soon because I'm so busy with school rn). And I do remember it being basically everything I wanted it to be- a sequel to one of my favorite games that improves upon the original's strongest and weakest aspects. However, the catch for TotK is that the novelty of it wore off a lot faster than BotW. BotW was such an incredibly mind-blowing experience, and with TotK being a sequel that took place in the same world... yeah. I was certainly wowed when I first played it, but I very quickly became accustomed to it. I still love the game, might even consider it my favorite Zelda game (though we'll see if my opinion stays that way when I replay it), but it definitely didn't have the same level of impact on me because of the nature of what it is

If BotW never came out and we only ever got TotK, it would probably be considered the best game ever made. But as it is, TotK suffers from rehashing the formula and especially world map from BotW. Its not like the previous Zelda formula, because there a huge difference between creating new puzzle rooms (dungeons) that follow a similar formula (get new item halfway through, use it to defeat boss, it unlocks new places in the overworld) and reusing the same game world that follows the same formula of collection and exploration

I feel similarly, but I think it's for a different reason. With totk I was hoping for a more "traditional Zelda" experience, and while it definitely had incorporated more of it from botw, it wasn't enough to leave an impression. And while you say you like the story, sure it's an improvement over botw, but it still doesn't hold much of a candle to the previous games before botw.

Totk lack a bit of its own identity imo It’s literally just botw but better Majora’s mask is my preferred type of sequel where everything feels new and original in a new world and it doesn’t take away from ocarina of time. Replaying botw doesn’t feel nostalgic anymore cause totk was too afraid to let botw die. I don’t like reusing the same map for a Zelda sequel when exploration is a key component of the series. I like totk but it’s disappointing to see the game just came and went without leaving an impact

It's not a "you" thing. This happens all the time with game series and sequels. You played BotW first, so you hold it more fondly, while also acknowledging that TotK does things better. It's both a matter of nostalgia and taste. BotW was my first ever Zelda game, so I also hold it fondly, but I still prefer playing TotK and consider it more fun than it's predecessor. Same with OoT and MM. MM was my second ever Zelda game, so I hold it more fondly than OoT, even though I've played OoT more than I have MM.

Totk hasnt been forgettable for me. My child started playing it again recently and asks for help a lot. It gets to a point where I just play for him while he watches, and we have fun. And Ive really gotten back into it and enjoy playing it a second time. I am more of a 'one and done' kind of guy, so it takes a while (years) for me to want to replay games. For it being less than a year and I've already wanted to play it again makes it a really good game to me. Compared to Botw, after some time down the road, when it has been years since the last time Ive played either Botw or Totk and I get a hankering to play one of them again, im going to choose to play Totk first everytime.

Hit the nail on the head here. As you said, Totk's gameplay loop is so inherently tied to Botw that in a weird way, that's almost a weakness in a game where everything is improved. I remember a lot of people were bringing up Oot and Mm when talking about Totk (was still a really dumb period of discussion regardless). The thing that people didn’t ynderstand though was that Majora's Mask, while still using so many assests and elements from Ocarina, still had the player exploring an entirely different world with a wildly different story. And it was through those elements that the game was able to make a name for itself and stand out even years after release. Great video 👍. Funny thing, I also literally just beat rdr2 for the first time two weeks ago, and I just like you I keep thinking about it even though I moved onto another game. Such an amazing game. Lol

I'm pretty much in agreement with most of your points, but I will say that for me, and the circles I followed, the hype was *tangible*. It was like I could touch that feeling. And I think, in my case, that led to everyone burning out on it. Most people played BotW several times, where TotK was shelved after one full playthrough. I didn't even finish mine. I got burnt out shrine hunting in preparation for the Ganon fight and moved on back to Warframe and Bauldur's Gate and everything else in my steam library. I think what really sealed the deal for this game's falloff was twofold; regression of some mechanics that were arbitrarily removed and the lack of DLC. Weirdly, it's a complete game and we should be happy it doesn't need DLC... but outright dropping it and saying "nah we're done, lolbye" was a pretty big letdown. They removed some serious QoL features like the teleporting horse armor, while keeping several others like the travel medallion (which you got 3 of this time). That was such a strange decision. Horses were the same, and, as a result of not having that summon teleport, I stopped using them entirely. I genuinely think we need a Master Trials kind of DLC. Maybe one with an explanation of what happened to the Sheikah tech. It really felt like more could be done with the game through DLC, but it's just gonna sit there and stew as a somehow forgettable masterpiece. Bizarre place for a game to be.

But in my experience, the love and thoughts that I had for Breath of the Wild were replaced by Tears of the Kingdom. I greatly enjoyed BotW, but I don't think any other game's gameplay loop has been nearly as addictive, satisfying, and fulfilling as TotK. I still find myself thinking about it and wanting to replay it, as well as recommending it to anyone and everyone who hasn't had the pleasure.

I played botw just so I could play totk, and it was worth everything I poured into it. Botw taught me what being thrown into a gigantic world and feeling the breath of the wild felt like. Totk gave me that all over again. It felt like botw, but it also felt like its own thing. I'd be thrilled to visit a place I did before at botw and be amazed at how it changed. (Also, turns out your horses in your botw save file can be used again in totk. My jaw metaphorically hit the floor when I saw my horses at the stable.)

My thoughts on TotK is that it is a worse experience than Breath of the Wild. No excuses. It is unfocused, retreading the same ground, and very stale. It completely removes one of the main aspects of BotW, the traversal. Hyrule was designed FOR BotW, there were areas for shrines, koroks, side quests, etc that all had some purpose. TotK has to deliberately try and distance itself, not using the same areas and what not, making the exploration worse. The Sky is pretty much worthless, filled with mini puzzles and islands that don't really add to much at all, and the Depths is a pretty slapped on addition that just overbloats this already big game. The building mechanics, too, absolutely suck when you try and build something even slightly complicated that usually is way worse than just stabbing the enemy. The dungeons ( let's be real, they're divine beasts in disguise. ) suffer from the same flaws as the divine beasts, but worse cause you can easily cheese them and ignore the main aspect in most of them. The lightning temple is really the only exception. And the sages, too, also just clutter up the combat and absolutely suck when you try and use them. TotK tried to replace BotW, but fails to comprehend how it works, or captures how cohesive and unique it was. It is purely a worse experience.

This is very interesting to think about. It is known that they had a lot of ideas for DLC but since they were, well, a lot, they decided to do a sequel instead, and they did let us know in advance it would be reusing the same world. Going by that, I always expected a similar experience while still expecting improvements, and by simply having those expectations, I had a great time, But it is undeniable that Totk wouldn't be as special as it is if it wasn't for Botw existing, it owes a lot to its predecessor. And honestly, I think Totk in a similar way has also set a great foundation for future Zelda games to follow, and since we know the next game won't be on the same Hyrule, then it looks very exciting from now. The structure might the same, but I see Botw as the innovative title, and Totk as the refinement, and typically titles that are more innovative end up being more impactful.

Honestly, I still felt the same about Breath of the Wild about as far into it's life cycle as we are now with TOTK, but I still went and bought the BOTW Cartridge anyway months after completing TOTK. I feel like as soon as the next iteration of the Zelda series comes about, there will be so much nostalgia for both BOTW and TOTK alike because they, like the rest of the series are in the past and an experience like them won't be available again. I've played each and every one of the 3d zeldas multiple times, and am currently working through Twilight Princess again now- the whole series carries so much for me that while right now I feel that TOTK was 'forgettable', I know for sure the first time I dropped into water and saw the new deep splash animation, I was hooked enough into the same game engine as BOTW to justify an 80+ hour binge over the course of mere weeks. Nothing is so beautiful as in hindsight, and thats why I think I appreciate The Legend of Zelda's Legacy throughout the years, 2D and 3D games alike.

You haven't heard anyone say anything about this game since around the release window? You mean, like, on the Internet or IRL? Because, let me tell you, there are a good amount of people online (especially with reviews and video essays on KZitem) discussing the game, especially recently. And most of what I've seen are the fans expressing disappointment in the game. Hell, Zeltik just released a video 2 days ago on TOTK and I've been having that on loop for a while now. It's a good watch. Me, personally, I agree. I think TOTK follows BOTW too closely and does not provide enough variety on the elements that are new to the game to make it truly stand out on its own. The Depths is probably the most guilty of this. I was blown away when I discovered it for the first time and I was excited at the possibilities it could have, helped by the fact that I had bought TOTK not too long after I had finished BOTW (I got Breath, like, a year or two ago) and was feeling burnout/fatigue from the game. But, I soon realized, there's pretty much nothing in the Depths. The terrain is the same throughout (with maybe the occassional lake and that one biome under Eldin that's surrounded by lava) and the most interesting thing you can recover from the Depths is armor. They have maybe one or two new enemies exclusive to the Depths and all others are recycled from the Surface or Sky. The Depths (and Sky) could have had an entirely new population of monsters and denizens separate from the Surface to make it truly unique amd memorable. And, don't get me started on Tears' story. That needed another year or two in the oven to fully bake, it's so bad. But, there is a lot to love about Tears. The combat is improved a bit from Breath. Ultrahand and Recall are absurdly broken in the many fun ways you cam use them. Building contraptions and war machines are highlights of the game as many, many videos can attest to. And the dungeons are definitely a step up from Breath's with the ascension to the Wind Temple and its boss fight along with the entirety of the Lightning Temple being my absolute favorites.

TOTK equals Justice Leaugue Snyder cut. I don’t hate super hero movies, but I almost do. It’s simply the only closest to perfect example I can think of. Differences being it got worse not better, and new content added not simply re edited. but it’s what it feels like. 4 “dungeons” with extra trimming before during and after. Great, just like a 2nd draft. Memories, again….. Shrines, different BUT same. Again. Add in the comments and execution of the lack of care from the team in the series lore and connectivity and it’s hard not to see the game as almost a metaphor for the companies direction with their hardware systems as well. Leaning towards “gameplay innovation” over all. It’s lead to some great success but I simply can’t agree that more effort to story and dungeons within story design can’t be applied. The last 2 games alone might sell 60M copies. Funding is there. I swear someone obsessed with story needs to be in there too. It’s such low hanging fruit and I get depressed thinking of it rotting.
@keithlarsen8423

I think the reason why is because everything is so repetitive, there is only about ~50 hours of new content. Like the sky islands are few and far between, once you’ve seen one part of the depths you’ve seen it all since the biome never changes and it all blends in with itself. Plus there are only about 6 or 7 new enemies and all the main story elements all take place in the same locations with the same overall structure and progression. Plus with 1/2 of the map (and like 80% of the game) being reused you lose that feeling of exploration, wonder and just overall “awe” we had with BOTW. It almost made most of the main overworld just feel like how hyrule field or the great sea are just vessels which allow you to travel between important locations. The game doesn’t give the player the same amount of curiosity and urge to want to explore and get lost the same way BOTW did.

It has not completely left my mind, but yeah, I think TotK’s identity is too closely tied to BotW for it to stand on its own as a unique experience. I don't really think about the game a lot either and I loved it just as much. The exploration of Hyrule just is the thing that makes Breath of the Wild great and Tears of the Kingdom didn't properly iterate on, it didn't have mechanics that deviated as much from what was before as Breath of the Wild. Also, I think the flying traversal might be a big issue. When you get the glid set and have every tower unlocked, I estimate some 60 to 85% of the overworld is directly accessible by just falling there after being shot to the skies. It really disconnects you from the world in a way that just wasn't the case in Breath of the Wild. I understand why Nintendo would want to keep players from heaving the exact same grounds again, but it doesn't make for a good gaming experience.

I really appreciate your psychological take to TotK in this new influx of youtube criticism. Although, I would say that calling TotK "better in every way" is to far. It's dungeons are extremely weak, with generally worse (looser) level design and a significantly worse story that only rests on BotW's shoulders. The problem is that TotK is by and large a rehash of botw. It doesn't really fix BotW's major issues, despite pretending to, and the story is beat for beat the same as botw's. Not to mention how ridiculously empty the sky and depths are, which only makes the reused world worse. This means that the more you played BotW, the worse your experience with TotK will be. On top of that, they decided to charge $70 for it, pretending it's some kind of AAA next gen advancement on the franchise, when in reality, its just a redo of BotW.

They should've made TOTK *creepy, distorted, and weird...* 😮💨 They should have completely transformed Hyrule to the extent that it would be unrecognizable ~ *while a familiar world is cool, a world that should be familiar but is entirely alien is cooler.* I was so looking forward to a game that felt like Breath of the Wild's Majora's Mask. Instead, we got something that felt a bit shallow... *Literally, we got the depths* They should've made TOTK *take place entirely in the sky...* 😮💨 They should have done so much more with the sky element ~ imagine if most of the game took place up there, *with tons of different sky islands and worlds to explore, each with their own identity.* Picture a game where you journey from one sky island to another, *gradually ascending towards a Ganon's (Hyrule) castle, that's also in the sky, straight Laputa style.* But what we got was just a few scattered sky islands above the same old Hyrule. *It's different, sure, but it still feels too familiar.* *And that's the thing:* TOTK is a great game, but it lacks that special something that makes it memorable ~ they tried to cram too much into one map, turning what could've been really cool ideas into just filler. The *depths* and the *sky islands* could have been amazing if they were developed independently from Hyrule. *I would argue that each could have been their own standalone games* 😮💨 They should've realized that sticking too closely to the same old formula, that having players quite literally walk the same ground as BOTW would end up hurting how the game would be perceived and the fun of playing it. *womp, womp* 😮💨

I think this stems from you 100%ing Breath of the Wild, a game so chock-full of content that you can't really be expected to see all of it - rather, the path you take will be different from the path anyone else takes. Me, I played Breath of the Wild in 2017, freed the divine beasts, found the master sword, and fought Ganon. If I stumbled across a sidequest that looked interesting, I did it. Then I never touched the game Over 6 years later, the idea of revisiting that world was a whole lot more exciting when I'd be jumping in for my ~60th hour, as opposed to my ~500th hour like some people.

I've heard a lot of the things people liked and disliked about it, and I have my own pros and cons as well. Things like after a 6 year wait, it's disappointing how much is recycled even on top of the reused map. Nintendo has never actually cared about lore or timelines (and for the most part, neither do I), but as a direct sequel, they were way too selective with who remembers Link and who does not. People have always wished for a "post-ending" to be playable in Zelda, and TotK could have been that for BotW, but it failed in that regard. Having the returning towns and villages changed in various ways was nice, but imagine if some of the old settlements or ruins were built back up, and we got to (optionally) experience 3 or 4 more "newly rebuilt" towns, like Hyrule Castle Town, Mabe Village, Deya Village, or even the area around the Temple of Time being reachable with the road up to the Great Plateau open again. For me, there was plenty of fertile ground to expand, but surprisingly little was utilized in meaningful ways. What was changed was great, but I don't think it felt like more than DLC, or a remixed Master Quest mode.

The storytelling is garbage, the depths are empty and meaningless, the sky is underwhelming and barren, the shrines are copy pasted all over the map, the combat is the same, 4/5 dungeons are bad, npcs forget who you were, same koroks. Cool abilities like reversing time and Ascend are underutilized, while 3/4 of the shrines are just gimmicky ultra hand puzzles/combat challenges. Really hope Nintendo reinvents Zelda again because while botw was amazing, totk feels like an Ubisoft sequel.

this is probably just a you thing. botw kinda sucks in comparison, and I still think about TotK every now and again. yeah, botw was alright, but its cracks show the more you play it, and before long you realize it's kind of a trash game with nothing in it. TotK however feels great all the way through. its puzzles are better, the sidequests are better, it actually HAS a story unlike botw, it actually HAS dungeons unlike botw, and it's just overall a better game. it looks better, it feels better, it is better. it's still stuck in my mind. when thinking of botw, I tend to think about how boring it was, and how I wasted hundreds of hours exploring the same world for no reason. but TotK is a single standalone experience that has a beginning and an end and feels good all the way through. BotW left you wanting more. TotK left you feeling satisfied.

I guess I feel for BotW what you feel for TotK. Don't get me wrong, the ancient stuff made that game amazing, the guardians were anxiety machines... but then I ran into my first gloomspawn in the depths. I never felt a reason to explore in BotW since it was all for korok seeds and shrines, there was nothing really new to the adventure. But this one gives me a ton to explore for to add to my ultrahand library. My issues with this game are the same with the last, stacks upon stacks of wasted potential... but these new NPC's burn me up. I can't stand how they insist on getting in front of you no matter what, it makes the temples a pain. I thought I was upset with Yonobo for this... but then I tried building a house... oh wow that was frustrating having this guy sweat to sprint to get in the way of me building until I did it from a high rise. So this game definitely frustrates me. But my biggest issue is still how dismissive this installment is of BotW. Everything is just gone like the ancient tech and everything associated just vanished and got replaced by zonai tech... except arrowheads? Give me back my ancient horse armor! I love this game, but games like this remind me why I'm learning to make games.

I think they shouldve kept Hyrule but also brought us to some other countries like Labrynna, Holodrum, even maybe Termina!

I agree. It's a better game in every way compared to Breath of the Wild. Yet for some reason I can't finish it. I have put a lot of hours into the game (though nowhere near the amount I've played in Breath of the Wild), but I have been avoiding the end. I have a ton of fun playing it and I'll probable never go back to Breath of the Wild since I have Tears of the Kingdom. However, it doesn't hold the same nostalgia. Instead it plays off of the nostalgia for Breath of the Wild. The fun part about it IS the fact that it's the same locations but now they're different. I haven't played in a few months now and I'm a bit sad that I don't feel the same drive to play as I did with Breath of the Wild. Maybe in a couple of years the speedrunning community will make significant advancements and make it entertaining to play the way it is with Breath of the Wild.

I still play Ocarina of Time to this day, it stuck with me more than any other game. It was my first game competition and will probably be playing it on my death bed.

Saying TotK doesn't have an identity is wild, especially when in the same sentence you say TotK is better BotW. The Zelda fandom is absolutely cringe when it comes to TotK and the wild takes, and this is also falling into the cringe Zelda takes. But hey, gotta get those views in anyway you can I suppose

I've gotten tears of the Kingdom myself from earlier and it was totally worth it! As for right now, I am on a little bit of a quest on unlocking the ocarina of time suit or alternatively, I can just get a ocarina of Time amiibo to get the suit easily and quicker.

I think totk is an objectively better game because its just botw with more stuff to do. But that's also the problem, it really just feels like botw, again.

As someone who says that Tears of the Kingdom is his favorite game ever made, I agree with this video. I didn't think about TotK for a couple months after I stopped playing, and that is kinda weird. I think this was sort of a condensation of all the thoughts I've been having about TotK, basically that it's so good and better than BotW, but overshadowed by it. I've seen some game reviews say that it feels derivative, but that's kinda the point, as you addressed. TotK also means a lot more to me than BotW. BotW was just the best Zelda game when I played it, but TotK is the best game (to me), and Zelda as a franchise became so much more important to me over that time period and was actually around for the release. Also, if you've seen Razbuten's video on "Games I wish I hadn't replayed", that's a little how I feel about TotK. It's just a favorite because it's amazing AND the factors surrounding it, and I don't really think I should force myself to 100% it or do anything else, and I can just kind of let it sit, knowing it's my favorite game of all time.

It’s funny I’ve been going back to Totk to get all the shrines and it’s been showing me just how much there is to do. Been having so much fun and honestly I think totk is such a superior experience. Although I do agree it never really forged its own identity.

Nah yall just "dislike" things for clicks which forms spaces for the most hypercritical basement dwellers to validate their points. Gamers dont appreciate what we have anymore, I have a friend that literally says any clipping whatsoever breaks his immersion. This is my honest opinion at this point, gaming youtubers will never be satisfied especially as long as the algorithim prefers shitting on things to people appreciating things. The reason you said totk wasnt memorable was literally just because it was a sequel.. I was much more excited for totk than botw, even pre ordering it(which i almost never do), and had a much more impactful time playing it. They did so much with pre existing characters and concepts and storylines to keep you invested if you played botw. It does have an identity, just as much as majoras mask has an identity from oot, even more so in my opinion. The sales and reviews say it all, I feel like a bunch of content creators might have gotten burnt out from trying to milk as much content out of the game as possible and constantly streaming it, but i havemt talked to a regular person with any complaints about the game that wouldn't apply twofold to botw. Its a masterpiece, just like botw.

Bro you GOTTA emulate the game and try some mods, there is even one that adds master mode, including golden enemies, with golden horns with unique models and modifiers, as well as balance changes.
