What broke me watching the dragonification was Zelda’s reaction to consuming the secret stone: how her eyes were unfocused, how her hands trembled, how it seemed like it (she was in pain? shock?) hurt to speak, how she struggled to grab the Master Sword, and the fear on her face: finally, how she closed her eyes and was unrecognizable after. The music swelling, like a doom, and the atmosphere around her contributed. Zelda was so committed- even in that moment, through selflessness- to doing everything for her people. And Zelda’s voice is so akin to a sound in the light dragon’s up-close roar, I thought it was Zelda losing the last bits of her humanity. Made me feel like a wimp. I thought, she possibly lived her last moments as Zelda in pain. And then the silent princesses surrounding the place. It hurt to see her like that, but it was a beautiful sacrifice. Such a powerful scene! I didn’t cook on her head again after that one.

Even though Link hasn’t shown emotions and expressions in BotW and TotK cutscenes, his eyes is somewhat shown emotion. Like when Zelda cries and falls onto Link’s arms in BotW. His eyes looks heartbreaking and sad. Then in TotK, after Zelda becomes a light dragon memory ends. Link looks around the silent princesses and his eyes looks to be upsetting. And when he finally faces Ganondorf, his eyes is determined and mostly angry for what he has done to him, Zelda and even Hyrule.

Yes, Twilight Princess Zelda is my favorite, and no, it's not because of her aesthetic character design. She's my favorite because she's reserved, regal, and most importantly, selfless. This version of the character barely shows up, but that doesn't mean she has no personality. Being introverted and stoic doesn't automatically mean there's nothing going on-I would know because those traits often apply to me, and it's part of why I relate to this Zelda the most. Of all the Zeldas, she's probably the most queenly, which makes sense considering she's also the oldest; wearing a poker face and giving nothing away-especially when dealing with hostiles-is part of the point of her character. TP Zelda is actually the most interesting character to me in that game because of the precarious position she finds herself in, and how she chose to respond to it: she surrenders, not out of cowardice, but to prevent mass bloodshed at the hands of an invading force much stronger than her own that has already breached the walls of her castle. It's an ultimatum. She's the princess of a conquered land, held hostage in no position to bargain, and must make a really difficult decision for the sake of her kingdom's wellbeing. Every single choice she made in that game was not only the responsible one considering the hand she was dealt, but also selfless and self-sacrificial. Giving up her lifeforce to save Midna, a person she barely knows, on the chance that it will save everyone else was not just selfless, but also a testament to her foresight and precisely what I expect from a wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom-and if you pause at the right time during that cutscene, you realize she does it with a smile! This Zelda never faltered when faced with the prospect of death, conducting herself calmly and collectedly like a proper leader, and I think most people overlook her good qualities-which, to be fair, is easy to do when Midna's character arc is at the forefront of the story, and easy to see Zelda as being outshone by her. OoT Zelda is also one of my favorite Zelda incarnations because of the obvious melancholy that surrounds her after everything's said and done. Her choice to send Link back comes off as very bittersweet-like yeah, she's trying to right the wrongs of the past that she feels responsible for (even though she was a literal child when it all happened, and that's far too much to put on her shoulders), but the whole thing seems like it's tinged with regret and words left unsaid. I get the impression she feels directly at fault for Link's lost childhood, which adds another layer of heartbreak considering he was basically a child soldier and no one is going to remember all the things he had to go through. I think it's possible this Zelda carries a lot of guilt with her, on top of the baggage of having to be on the run for seven years during the most formative period of her life. She and OoT Link are tragic characters, and I view their relationship as almost like a doomed romance, i.e. "the one that got away." Her decision was ultimately the correct one, but it's no less sad; OoT's underlying tragedy isn't talked about enough. In terms of character development, BotW/TotK Zelda is objectively the best written one, no doubt, but TP Zelda is still at the top of my favorite Zeldas list, and I think she and OoT Zelda are among the best incarnations along with BotW/TotK. Yeah, I know the games don't explicitly spell out everything I've said above, but it being subtext is part of why I like it and good art can be up to interpretation sometimes; I like that all this is subtle enough that you have to really pay attention and be a little more reflective to find a surprisingly profound meaning and poignant storytelling. Things can't always be taken at face-value.

Personally i didnt feel like they gave her enough character development in totk for me to care (as much i was supposed to) about her sacrifice Botw's story was much better imo. She had way more character development, and went though a whole ass arc from completely insecure to willing to seal ganon for 100 years. I guess she still sacrificed herself in totk and put all her absolute trust in link. But there was no arc and sophisticated development like there was in botw. She kind of just realizes... "this is what I was supposed to do." and just accepts it. It's just hard to play totk when there's the insanely rich story of botw.

Glad I'm not the only one who seems to favor BotW's story over TotK. Which isn't to say that TotK was "bad"...just that, as much as TotK seems to have improved in some aspects coming from BotW, for me it is also still lacking in others. The way that TotK as a whole plays out gives me the impression that it barely acknowledges the existance of its predecessor BotW, as if it doesn't want to give players (especially new folks to the series) the impression that need to play BotW in advance to understand it.😅

I’ve been a Zelda fan since Ocarina of Time, and, as much as I’ve liked past incarnations of the character, BOTW/TOTK’s incarnation of Princess Zelda is the first one that I’ve really loved. You get a great sense for her internal struggle, her love not only for Link but also for Hyrule and its people, how she puts everything on the line to save Hyrule, and how she ultimately overcomes everything in the end. I also get the impression that her nerdy, rambling side is part of the reason why Link bonded with her. Something that stood out to me about the Master Sword cutscene in TOTK is Zelda's expression when you see the vision of her; her expression isn't one of sadness but rather determination, like she knows the burden she bears and has the courage to see it through to the end. I guess her sealing herself away with Ganon for 100 years counted as a sacrifice, but it felt more like a temporary badass measure to stall time for Link; it didn't register to me that way or hit anywhere near as hard as her draconification. The final tear memory makes my stomach knot like a fist no matter how many times I watch it. It also gives Link's quest in TOTK a sense of urgency that I felt was lacking from BOTW because the entire time I was thinking, "I know they said that draconification was permanent, but screw that! I want to beat Ganondorf and hopefully find a way to turn Zelda back! She deserves another chance at life after all she's been through!"

Ocarina of Time Zelda is one I have a more personal favorite for (so much I had the same issue with admitting BotW/Totk/AoC Zelda is better in character). We see a child thinking she can take on evil that only she and the player can see. Despite her efforts, she and Link play into the hands of a cunning invader who takes her home and destroys her kingdom. So, she goes into hiding to correct her wrong. She guides the player and helps them navigate a world they thought they knew. After revealing herself, She sort of mentions her guilt, but puts on a brave face full of optimism for the player to try to help encourage them to fight to take down Ganon before she is captured. Then she assists Link in the final fight. Then, after thanking Link, she finally reveals the depths of her guilt and gives Link a second chance at his childhood. Not realizing that not only does this leave her kingdom without a hero, but she effectively ruined the heroes life because his mental state had grown with his journey. Nothing was the same mentally, even after it shifted back physically. She is the Failure Princess, which does not usually happen, especially in Nintendo games.

At least it gave us Linebeck... 2) I was so happy how they took the criticisms of BOTW Zelda to heart and made her a better character in TOTK. This is the Zelda we needed, the Zelda other games like Twilight Princess lacked. It kinda hurts to think there's a very real possibility the next Zelda title will not feature these specific characters and will go for a new Link and Zelda in a new land and new story. But maybe they'll just take what they've learned here and apply it to the next game. Hopefully. 3) that Skyward Sword disrespect!

What I really loved about the Draconficatiom scene was that at first it going to be super-elegant and we’d cut away from Zelda right after she sombrely swallows the stone to the Light Dragon emerging in a big explosion of light. But instead we’re given a few horrible seconds where the realisation of what she’s done hits Zelda and she almost collapses in pain and regret, only to push through and grab the Master Sword at the last second. It doesn’t feel like a robot emotionlessly carrying out what’s best for the kingdom with zero hesitation like some other Zeldas, but a genuine human being who clearly doesn’t want to do it making the ultimate sacrifice anyway to save the home she loves.

Yes, and I also understood (but I may be wrong) that sealing calamity Ganon isn't just something passive, but she is strongly holding up the calamity for more than a hundred years while link is throwing rocks at Koroks. In a way I even feel like this is a more painful sacrifice in BOTW since it must be exhausting/painful/horrible to actively hold up a dark force for so long, while the draconification is "just" kind of loosing consciousness (but she seems to still feel pain during this whole time). So both sacrifices are quite different although the one in TOTK is better presented I think.

Really good video on Zelda's character! Lol, honestly, however, I find Twilight Princess Zelda to be my favorite. Though we didn't see her much, at the moments she did, she showed to be wise, and strong still along with being completely kind and humble. I really like BOTW/TOTK Link and Zelda. It is true that Zelda, she was unnecessarily rude to Link and misjudged him. But when he opens up about what he goes through, that is where she truly changed. She realized that the way she treated Link was wrong. That is why I like their relationship so much in that game because Zelda and Link had to build a relationship with each other. Because their relationship needed time to be built, it left more of an impact by the time they fixed it. When their relationship is built, we see how close they are to each other, and how they truly cared for one another too. Sometimes in a story, there is a conflict, but then it gets fixed fast, and it makes it feels like it wasn't important. I think BOTW did a great job with this.

we not just gonna gloss over what Skyward Sword Zelda had to go through! Good video my guy! My personal concept for the next game would be for this same Link to become his own character that isn't just following Zelda's guidance as her sworn knight. I want to see him go on his own personal journey, with Zelda in a more passenger role. Preferably outside of this Hyrule in either a different region or out at sea, Wind Waker style. LET LINK BE INTROSPECTIVE AND EMOTIVE

Hey man, I gotta say, I truly appreciate you making this video. You have perfectly articulated the exact points that makes this iteration of Zelda such a joy to see. Seeing her growth, sacrifice, and selflessness were so, so satisfying. While we (link) did the legwork, she truly paved the way for the hero to succeed. And that is made so much more apparent in this game as opposed to Botw. What's funny is that I did not appreciate her character at all in Botw / AoC. Something about her Totk really hit it home for me and caused me to appreciate her there as well. These 2 mainline games did a great job making it feel like this is truly her legend. This is a good stride for Nintendo and a step in the right direction for future installments. I'm excited to see what they have in store for her in the future. Dp you have any thoughts on what you would like to see in DLC or even possibly a 3rd installment in this generation? P.S. This SS zelda slander hurts man. You gotta do her like that?

Although totk isn’t even a top 5 Zelda game for me, when I found out about the draconification, I deadass went through the five stages of grief irl, it was just so damn sad! I think that Zelda’s character is very well written in recent years. She’s constantly making huge sacrifices for the betterment of Hyrule (sealing herself for 1000 years in SS, holding Ganon at bay for 100 years in BOTW, etc.) She’s a badass in her own way, but not your cookie-cutter “strong female character.” Especially the most recent incarnation. She has flaws but remains kind and compassionate, which I’d argue are her defining traits. And it’s that very love that allows her to unlock the sealing powers. For all my complaints about Tears, they really knocked her story out of the park.

Man, I have the exact opposite opinion. BOTW's Zelda had real texture and conflict as a character, which made me invested in her growth. TOTK's Zelda feels so dumbed down by comparison. She's a passive observer for most of the memories, and her only real act of agency (if you can call it that, since she had no other choice and was brought to that era against her will) is to be the sacrificial uwu maiden again but with even more suffering. It's so gross and misogynistic, to the point where she becomes a non-entity you have to hit to farm parts to upgrade your outfit. Really searing indictment of how Nintendo treats her in general; she's treated like a thing and not an actual character. We don't see her utilize any of her interests or intelligence to formulate a plan to help Link stop Ganondorf. Nope, her goddess powers are all that matters, and she has no self-worth outside of sacrifice. TOTK's story is a strong contender for worst Zelda story ever.

Zelda's character is the best thing narrative wise within the BOTW Trillogy(BOTW, TOTK and Age of Calamity even if it is probably not canon). Unlike the other Zeldas which we barely know anything about them and she's more of a plot device most of the time(except Spirit Tracks, WW because of Tetra and MAYBE Skyward Sword but still not too much), this Zelda actually had an arc, agency and it's an engaging character. She suffered a lot and we saw some of her flaws in the BOTW memories, but we also see a lot of how selfless and brave she is when it's needed to, the fact that she decided to defy Calamity Ganon knowing that it was a lost cause and be willing to completely lose herself in order to restore the Master Sword and save the world in the future through her hope on Link, shows how great this Zelda is, and Age of Calamity shows more about her personality, relationship with the others Champions and even her actual combat style. BOTW/TOTK have weak stories imo, but if there is one thing that i can't complain about them is Zelda.

I fully agree. I absolutely love the Zelda games where link and Zelda actually have somewhat of a personality. I can’t stand the blank slate Link and Zelda, where it looks like the lights are on, but no one‘s home don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge Zelda fan, but I never really got why people loved the blank slate versions that they wanted to push. I understand they were using it so that we can project our own thoughts and feelings, but if they were gonna do that, we should’ve just created our own character. I don’t know. I guess it feels good to have someone else feel the same. it’s also why I always enjoyed the books more than I enjoyed the games crazy right but Link actually talked. He had a personality and it was different. Every time. He’d go from someone who is super wholesome to a natural born leader to someone riddled with anxiety and fear that he wasn’t good enough, it just gave what it was supposed to have given

Watching Zelda become a dragon in TOTK all I could think was back in BOTW when she said "Am I the only one with a mind of her own?" And then she became a mindless animal in the sequel. At least when Skyward Sword's Zelda sacrificed herself we got to be there and see Link's reaction to it after he spent the whole game trying to find her, instead of it just being shown in a flashback.

Botw/totk > tetra > spirit tracks > ss > the rest Many Zeldas have a wonderful nobility about them, but those games are the best examples of how you should be writing women in general, and more specifically how you should be writing women with power that you aren't meant to despise. Tetra always gets crap for turning into Zelda by people who don't want to grow up and take some responsibility, but when she realized her role and took her place it was a great reflection of link's own selfless journey. They just fucked it up by turning her back into tetra in PH, really missed the ball there.

TOTK Zelda is a true hero: Finds herself in the past. Tries to save both that past and her future. Fights alongside the sages, providing a key element to sealing Ganondorf. Arranges a plan that works tens of thousands of years in the future. This includes figuring out how to raise the earth into the sky. Saves Link on instinct in the final fight. Goes through her own hero’s journey. She realizes there is something only she can do and makes the sacrifice, fully ready to die for everyone else. If any character in the games was deserving of being “The Legend,” it would be her.

like Zelda in totk is absolutely the star of the show, she is quite literally the reason why Link was able to save the kingdom in the first place her going into the past allowed her to set up the tools and plans for link to use in the present, such as informing the past sages of what's to come and allowing the sages to pass on their power to the future sages. if Zelda hadn't done half of what she did in the past, Hyrule would've of been royally fucked

Agree with you! ToTK Zelda actually can correctly call itself "The Legend of Zelda", because she is the main character and not Link. The other games usually focused too much on Links story and did not really feel like it was about Zelda at all, more like a Legend of Links adventures or something...So I hope Nintendo keeps focusing the story around Zelda more, maybe not completely on her but at least find the same balance as ToTK.

I agree with most of the video though, also I feel like AoC should get a fair mention too. Although things happen different there, I think the characters remain largely the same as their botw versions. AoC really gave us more development (for both Zelda and Link) as characters and showed us that Zelda was probably not bitchy outside of Link lol 😅
