Aljosa Koledar First, unlike the energy problem we are facing that Elon Musk is helping to solve, agriculture is not in any state of collapse in the near or "medium" future (150 years or so let's say). So it is less of a problem. Second, people are talking about it all the time. As someone who doesn't really care as long as I can eat, it is actually very annoying. If you replace meat with "fake" meat, I'll eat it all the same. If somehow the world suddenly stops meat production and I am forced to eat only vegetarian/vegan food, so be it. I don't care enough to be actively involved with it. If that's something that matters to you enough, good for you. Keep at it. Most people are interested in bettering themselves/their family/their society/humanity as whole in different ways. Yes, this is a big problem but it's not something everyone should be focusing on. Same with clean renuiable energy. I care about it more than agriculture, but still not enough to take action in that direction. People should stop shoving agendas and simply just mention their world views so that in the back of our heads we are aware of these problems and act accordingly. Final note, this is all my opinion and I am not forcing it on anybody. Just hopefully giving another perspective :]

1) Subjective, ergo, a biased argument. 2) Delivery issues can be resolved by methodical and thorough calibration. 3) True, but that does not negate the value of equally viable herbivore style of eating exist. 4) The cost difference is largely attributed to governmental subsidies meat factory farms receive. 5) It does not negate the merit and effectiveness of the existing alternatives. 6) A good ole middle finger to society for placing such unwarranted stigma goes a long way. I don't think anyone will stop eating meat; we get various essential amino acids from meat. Humans evolved to rely on meat to sustain an calorie-demanding brain and high-order cognition. Unless plants are reverse-engineered to contain the same nutritional profile as meat, humans will consume meats for ages to come.

SogMosee, consuming carcinogens which increase your potential of cancer by less than a percent is not exactly "destroying your health and life." A lot of the health problems with meat can be eliminated in cultured meat, and they will-as long as it doesn't negatively affect the taste.

Like I said, delusional. Delusional people tend to rewrite facts to suit their narrative. The good thing about the methane is that it can be collected and used to replace other fuels. It burns cleaner than things like gasoline, and burning it prevents its being released as methane into the atmosphere, killing two birds with one stone. If we just harnessed the cows' waste gasses, we could actually reduce greenhouse emissions rather than increase them, and there are ranches that do just that, making a lot of money either selling the methane or generating electricity with it. I love the idea of cultured meat, but let's make the systems we have better, too. That means methane harvesting.

@mistahsusan2650
7 жыл бұрын
I'd anticipate there would be a massive lobbying effort by the factory-farmers. it's not like with tobacco or motor vehicles, where companies can just invest in a new technology (vaping and electric motors/hybrids cars). once those farms are gone, those animals are gone; and they won't be coming back.

I have to agree that the current method of producing meat is not as efficient as it could be, and that efficiency is likely to win out. But I think meat from slaughtered animals will still remain in the future, even if on a greatly reduced scale (if not as an outright niche item). It could be a case where some people people continue to pay for the entire animal to be grown and slaughtered because they feel slaughtered meat is more "authentic" than cultured meat, or because they have a romanticized image of ranching.

He said he liked it and that it did taste very much like meat but he could tell right away that it wasn't. He was impressed with it but said that it certainly was not quite there. I'm only concerned that you misrepresented him as saying that it tastes like beef when the thing he was actually eating was beef in that moment. Maybe add an annotation? A better choice might have been Adam Savage's reaction if your intention was to show a person being blown away by the impossible burger. Great video apart from that nitpick.

I am concerned about one thing though. When we reach this stage, would this cause a mass extinction of lifestock? The genetic variability of lifestock is largely due to the support of humans. When these animals bear no value to the humans, like the wildlife, the humans may no longer support them. But unlike the wildlife, these lifestock may not find a way as they have been too dependent on humans. Do a video on that too?

Another problem with synthetic meat is the formation of tissue from grown cells. In my first year of biotechnology I grew cells from chicken embryo organ samples. I ended up with a thin layer of cells on the surface of a petri-dish. These cells did not form muscles, just muscle cells. Same thing with liver cells. You could compress a cell slurry I guess, but try to make that taste like steak (the consistency of food is very important after all). It would very quickly become a very elaborate process. Last time I checked they were working on making frameworks for the cells to grow into tissues to repair vascular damage. Maybe they can do something like that for steak as well, but it's probably gonna be a while until we see serious progress.

@Altorin

Archer Sipher it wasn't him making the jump. It was a hypothetical future society that has been growing their meat exclusively in a lab for decades or centuries that would be making that jump. But there *are* people who make that jump today. I'm just saying that he is not necessarily one of them. He was speaking hypothetically.

@Archer Sipher: There is a big ethical difference between killing a free-living animal to survive and mass-breeding animals for the sole purpose of enslaving and eventually killing them for luxury reasons.
@TriplekilzTk1
7 жыл бұрын
I don't see the "big" difference that just sounds like a personal issue. I mean would you rather have farmers chase the chickens before they kill them? Or would you rather people eat the bare minimum of what they need? What difference does it make if they were "free-living" or not?
@hypercent
7 жыл бұрын
@TipleKilz: Well, ethics is a personal issue after all. Fact is: people in the first world don't need to eat meat to survive since there is a surplus of plant-based food. So the existence of the meat industry is pure luxury and in no way necessary. The "bare minimum" of meat would be none at all. And between what we have now and there being no meat at all I would indeed prefer the latter. Regarding your last question: Try to imagine a scenario where certain humans are systematically killed for some reason (has happened before, unfortunately). While killing them is highly questionable on its own, to say the least, do you really see no difference between them living freely and them being imprisoned their whole life before that? If you do see a difference, why don't you anymore when replacing humans with animals in this scenario?
@TriplekilzTk1
7 жыл бұрын
How is killing animals questionable? "We don't need meat" isn't a good argument. We don't need a lot things for survival but no one's discarding them (e.g. cars, bikes, paper, plastic, smart phones, planes, alcohol). "do you really see no difference between them living freely and them being imprisoned" The difference is life is a lot less enjoyable for me (if I was imprisoned). So what you're saying is stop eating meat to give animals a good life? A free cow follows the herd, eats grass, migrates to survive and gets hunted by predators. Aren't they going to meet the same fate either way? So most people know where meat, animal products, milk, eggs, and wool come from yet most people aren't vegans and since "ethics is a personal issue" then most people don't mind eating meat and using animal products knowing the consequences. A better argument is the negative effects to the environment and how resource heavy it is.

Going vegan is the best solution we have right now. We've reached the point of this argument where meat eaters can't deny the overwhelming facts supporting that it's better for our health, environment and Earth's depletion of resources. When cultured meat becomes the norm this might not be the case, but right now it's the conscious decision to make. Not to mention the unfair suffering and death of innocent beings we cause on a daily basis. Humans slaughter roughly 56 billion animals every year. Meaning every day, we kill around 153,000,000 animals. We still remember tragedies like 9/11 and rave about how awful it was for killing less than 3,000 people, but that's 0,0018% of the beings we slaughter DAILY. Even if you think human lives are more important, the animals feel the same desire to live as us. They feel pain and fear of death, just like us.

Remember you are eating corpses if it was factory farmed. But if it was lab grown, you are eating babies. If you are eating it raw, you have a strange eating disorder.
@aronpuma5962

I mean, it's not really a baby, a baby is a functioning life form. Lab grown, cultured meat seems just like the parts that people tend to eat in a society, which can't really sustain growth on its own without that lab equipment. I does strip back the fact that really, life is just a series of chemical processes and, it is imitatable, which is exestentially terrifying I suppose.

Vegans are awesome! They understand this and unselfishly take action. Good job my vegan friends! You rock!
@mistahsusan2650

Jesse Wilson "unselfishly" yeah ... about that. I understand that there are some people who can't eat meat, like, they had a bad fall and can no longer chew properly; but I've never met a vegan that didn't shut up about their diet as if it's some kind of moral virtue. rule #1 to changing hearts and/or minds (not every one has both, not acknowledging this would be racist) don't be moral-fags about it, it's like Christian-Rap all over again ... geez.
@XDCherylLi

Mistah Susan I would argue that it IS a moral virtue to not cause unimaginable suffering for the pleasure of one's tastebuds. But think about it, you've probably met a lot of vegans that you didn't know were vegan because they weren't "bragging" about it. Only my close friends and family know I'm vegan because I share meals with them. It's called confirmation bias.
@neeneko
7 жыл бұрын
I have met very few vegans who will 'not shut up about their diet', and I would say for every one of them I have met 10 self described 'carnivores' who will not shut up about the virtue of their diet. That #1 rule only ever seems to get broken by the alternative side, while the larger group seems utterly blind to its own.
@chistinelane

neeneko have you tried looking at it though their eyes? Imagine living in a world where everyone ate human flesh, you'd probably be speaking out and getting just as frustrated with the fucked up cruel world as vegans do. I'm sorry, but the meat on your plate was an animal that died, and that's pretty hard to ignore for some people. There's even "burn out" where people just accept the world is fucked and nobody will really want to change no matter what happens

I would like to see: 1. An honest CO2-balance of soy-beans and rice production. One would be surprised how much methane is produced here... 2. An analysis of the question if a fully vegetarian society could actually exist at the high productivity levels as we have right now. Some scientists believe that productivity levels would fall if we would all rely just on a vegetarian diet. I think neither relying on "plant-meat" nor "lab-meat" will really help to solve the problem. They both use up a lot of energy and taste terrible. In the end you end up with a meat what has the same desastrous CO2-balance (it is just a myth that you will save ressources by that). The most promising protein source is insect-proteins, maybe we will have our future meat made from that (or at least the processed meat like hamburgers, sausages, etc.)
@SirCutRy

How do you know that lab-meat tastes terrible or uses a lot of energy? What supports those assertions?

SirCutRy: Well, I have worked in biochemistry-labs for years, and the dream of growing meat or even organs from stem cells is already around for decades. However, it turned out that it is not that simple. Even the first step, making muscle cells out of stem cells, is a multi-step process making use of all kinds of different growth media with different growth hormones and other factors. Meat is more than just some muscle-cells. You need fat (especially for the taste) , connective tissue, bones, blood cells and much more. On top of it you need movement to get the meat structure (and I do not mean a little bit shaking in a flask as is shown in the video). So with cultured meat you will either end up with a rather loose connected lump of muscle cells (which may be fine for minced meat, but not for steak or the like) or - in order ot get meat remotely similar to real one - you will have to put a lot of energie in a tedious and complicated process, needing lots of highly trained personal (I am talking about PhD-level, not farmers). Still, that meat will not be the same "sensation" like real meat, it will cost a fortune and it will contain all kinds of growth factors and hormones, stuff you maybe would not like to have in your meat.
@Tscharlieh

david sermoneta: Well, I don't think "cowspiracy" is a good example for a "fair analysis". Many numbers used in this documentary turned out to be exaggerated or plainly wrong. For example: Scientific calculations come to the conclusion that animal breeding is worldwide responsible for about 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions (in Germany and other modern countries it is actually rather 7%), the movie, however, talks about more than 80%... However, don't get me wrong, I fully concur with the view that meat-production is a huge problem with respect to greenhouse gas emissions. Especially since we can expect that the developing countries are just starting to consume meat. The point I want to make is, that exchanging meat with artificial meat made from rice and/or soy beans would be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire, since rice is a huge methane producer and soy-beans are mostly genetically modified. It might be a bit more effective to have the burger produced directly from soy beans than having it take a detour through the cow, but I think in the end one does not significantly reduce the CO2-production by that, because the further processing of the soy bean needs additional energy, and thus, produces CO2, something what is mostly left out of the calculations I saw...

If you cook your own food definitely its extremely easy yet to be real vegetarian without need of any mock meat. However the food industry focused on carnivores so very limited choices for vegetarians to find proper filling food in most cities. Vegetarianism also come with certain moral codes, So those who provide vegetarian food usually struggle to keep up with cost.

Out of all these craving for pleasure and politic, did anyone prioritized the efficiency of consumable form? Salad is low density, geometry that takes up space and annoying to eat. Meat consumes extra flue to cook, extra water to wash the mess. Both demand transportation in cold chain witch is the most expansive cargo hulling method. What if we don't move slimy content from one container to another? What if we just eat from the bag it came with? Is taste and religion really that important?

Do you think it's a contradiction? At 1:43 he says even though eating meat is immoral, being a vegetarian isn't a solution because it's too difficult. At 4:40 he says eating meat is like slavery Contradiction - if the solution to stopping slavery was stopping owning slaves, then the solution to producing meat, is stopping eating meat?

The great thing about cultured meat is that I don’t think any company would have to advertise and *label* it as such. Sure, they could if they wanted to, but they don’t have too. This means people who are skeptical of the whole thing may never know they are eating cultured meat, would find it impossible to differentiate between cultured and “naturally” grown, and so the only way to not eat it is to stop eating meat at all.

Awesome video! I only have one criticism: you mentioned that everyone becoming vegetarians would be one solution but dismissed it right away. Sure, I agree that not everyone will be vegetarian in the near future. But wouldn't you agree that the best thing we can do right now is to convince as many people to stop eating meat/reduce their meat consumption? It's better than doing nothing while you're waiting for the solution. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
