I know it's been while, but finally came around to finishing another video! I know the business videos aren't everyone's favourites, but I hope you enjoy! EDIT: Some short answers to questions I've seen in the comments: *1. From where did I get the information?* Almost put that one in the video - all the financial info I use is from the companies' own financial statements/ quarterly reports. Publicly traded companies need to publish those regularly and you can find them on their websites - just google. *2. If Tesla made a loss of $2.2 billion, how come they only lost $60 million in cash?* Because not every cost you incur is paid in cash. For example, say you own a car. Last year, your car lost $1,000 in value. If you were a business, in your accounting you would note down those $1,000 as a *cost* - because it is a real cost! But not a cost you have to pay in cash. That's why "profits" and "losses" are on paper. But cash is the hard currency you gained or lost. *3. What about government subsidies?* Yes, the US government has been supporting Tesla through tax breaks and loans. The reason I didn't touch on this in the video, is because the effective amount of cash Tesla has received through those programs is borderline insignificant, compared to the amount of cash they have received from non-state lenders and investors. In comparison, GM and Ford have received an order of magnitude more support from the US government during the crisis.

+midget_killer777 I'm not against praising the guy for a job well done, but let's be honest, the economics behind why Tesla hasn't gone bust are very basic, and the video took far too much time explaining obvious things that really don't matter. "Q: Why has Tesla not gone bust? A: Idiots are giving them free money based on hopes and dreams. When they lose money, investors donate more money to keep them running." Tesla keeps issuing shares and morons keep investing in the company, the reason for which I can only chalk down to a combination of good marketing and investor delusion. Reminds me of the DotCom bust, in which you had eBusinesses floating on the stock market to the tune of $100 million, despite struggling to make even $100k P/A profit. It's no wonder the bubble burst with that level of financial disparity, and Tesla is no different. If anything goes even slighty wrong, the company will be wiped.
@Militarymoneyman116
6 жыл бұрын
+pmodd Tesla is operating at a loss and has for many years, at the same time there is large potential for them to gain large market share in the automotive industry. what matters is that there are people buying the products and still a heavy demand. there is a huge risk in the company and you are right there is a huge chance they can go bust. however; if they can achieve the goals laid forth then their investors get a huge return. Im not recommending people go out and buy the stock (I typically recommend funds anyways for diversification purposes). what I did like about this video is that the creator was able to show how it is possible for a company to stay moving even when it has done nothing but lose money. while I dont typically go into this level of detail when explaining how a business operates, there are some people that could grasp the concept easier with the way this video describes Tesla. in all fairness this video is what I brag about, not Tesla. also, time for my rant of a bubble.... bitcoin.... @@XtoCee Erm, not really? It depends on who your shareholders are. Obviously everyone who buys shares has to believe you are going to earn a profit eventually, but they also buy because they believe your vision. They may believe in it philosophically or for financial reasons, but they typically do believe in it. Especially in this period Tesla is in (incidentally, Tesla doesn't and has no intentions of paying dividends to my knowledge. Neither has Amazon, just for a fun fact). And one can have a vision to change the world and an eye towards eventual profitability. And a distinction has to be made between appointed executives and founders/owners. Nearly every juggernaut of industry was indeed founded by a visionary who wanted to change the world. Rockefeller wanted to put quality kerosene for heat and light in every man's hands (modest today but revolutionary in the time), Ford believed in the automobile future, AT&T envisioned a society connected, Bezos firmly believed in the revolutionary potential of home-delivered online retail (in a time when everyone else was giving up on home delivered retail). All of them sunk massive investments to achieve what they believed could be. You don't have to like these people or their visions, but all of them are indeed visionaries. Which makes a lot of sense, there is incredible risks in entrepreneurship of this scale and most people would bail early. As has been said, "If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it." That's gotten a bit fuzzy lately, but it's still relatively true. You have to be willing to take major risks, which you can't do if you are holding tight to every dollar.

They don't have a debt problem though. Ford basically runs their own bank, so when a customer gives them $0 down for a $50k truck, that is recorded as $50k worth of debt. However, since Ford is running the loan all by themselves, they get all the interest payments that would normally got to a bank. So in the end they went $50k into debt giving you the loan, but you gave them $60k over 5 years so they gained $10k.

Interesting video, but seems like it's subjective towards Tesla, which is fine. But I think Tesla could easily lose more money. For example, they bought SolarCity the debt they had to help bail out himself and his family. It's probably better for people to start asking questions about how Tesla could fail and in what circumstances, instead of how they can succeed, if you're looking to invest. Don't really care much about the company valuation and stocks, but I do like their cars.

I don't have the numbers to back up what I'm about to say, but I'm sure they can be found. Tesla's main product is not their cars or their technology. Tesla's core product is a customers weekly (or more often) use of the recharge station. If you were to include the earnings when 50,000+ vehicles use a charging station on a weekly basis, you'll soon discover that Tesla's competition is not other car manufacturers but instead the gas companies. If a video including this information could be created, things would look much different in favor of Tesla.

People believe in it because there is a lot of capital chasing relatively few good ideas. Producing a sufficient amount of cars is a promise and is a good thing because of idea that they make a profit on each car that they produce. My guess is that marginal profit is based on sketchy cost accounting that seriously underestimates the cost of their batteries, and the likely future cost of batteries. There is so much disinformation in the global economy that the success of Tesla is detached from whether this is economically beneficial. Looking at the global economy, Tesla is a boutique.

Well, that's exactly how the financial market works. That's basically the first thing we were taught while studying economics. As long as people believe in something, it will work (religion is a prime example). That's how also, the iPhone has been selling millions of units. As long as people believe that it's cool to own an iPhone, that crap will continue to sell like pastries.

Tesla's business is not cars, solar panels or batteries; their business is INFRASTRUCTURE. Their network of superchargers will make them the owners of the biggest "gas station" chain in the world! Cars are the quick and easy way to get money, good marketing to grow their name and lock clients into their infrastructure. Elon Musk does sees the big picture.
@smminco
6 жыл бұрын
Tomás Jarsun ding, ding, ding! Imagine owning almost every gas station in the world. People will look back on Elon like he was able to predict the future. It's not all about the cars... It's the infrastructure that they're building that's important.
@Martinit0
6 жыл бұрын
Not only the gas station but also the oil rig. Tesla is now a vertically integrated electrification company. They can provide solar panels installation, utility scale battery storage, world wide superchargers and end user products like cars and trucks. And it's not like we are every going to run out of sunlight, unlike oil. Solar energy is going to keep declining in price further and further. There's a reason Tesla can guarantee 7ct/kWh to Semi users on their Megacharger network. In the long run, even that is profitable.

tankd0g I have a P100D, a Cadillac CTS-V, and a 997 GT3RS 4.0. early model Kia isn't exactly an apt description. But the model S charges for free. It'll be cars from other manufacturers that'll have to pay.
@smminco
6 жыл бұрын
tankd0g the model 3 isn't $100k. Even still, that's like complaining about not getting free gas. Electricity isn't free. That's the whole point of the infrastructure, to be a revenue stream generator.
@smminco
6 жыл бұрын
tankd0g direct quote: "...the appeal of a $100,000 car that's built like an early model Kia starts to wear off." The model 3 is the only Tesla that has to pay for supercharging. correct, which isnt a problem when profits are on the reasonably forseeable horizon. Tesla has been around for 25 years now, its not a creation of Musks but of a group of talented engineers. The company was founded in 2003, so it is 15 years old, not 25 years old. Tesla's investors must be generous to be dumping money into Tesla, and they must have a lot of faith in Tesla on the future prospect of the company.

I do have a bet with a friend that tesla will go down, as soon as Mercedes, VW, Audi and co go electric. But nowadays - when what you Tweet is more important then your company sales.. You are getting dividends because they have more cash than they know what to do with. This is good and bad. It's good they are making a profit but it's bad in the sense that they are not investing the cash and giving the shareholders a bigger return. The whole point of stocks initially was not dividends. The point of stock is to raise funding and in return the company invests that money in hopefully profitable areas and if they are profitable it will reflect in the companies share price which means the company is worth more and therefore the shareholders are worth more. You are getting large amounts of dividends because apple is not investing it's money.
