Tbh, affordability is going to keep retro handhelds in demand. A lot of people just want something affordable to do some 2-D gaming on. Every so often, I'll post a pic of me playing on my Miyoo Mini+, and I'll get hit with comments on where they can buy theirs. (I bought mine on Amazon to cut my wait time down, but on AliExpress, they're more affordable than a new Switch game.) The hardcore enthusiasts are going to want devices like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, the ROG Ally, or a Steam Deck; people that just want to play some Pac-Man or Mario will be happy with a Miyoo Mini+ or anything from the Anbernic RG line.

Same thing happened with electric guitars, you had the big brands and then people started to copey them, at the time Japan was pumping out very good high quality copies so was Korea, the big companies like Fender and Gibson did try and stop them but in the end they hired them to make guitars under there brand, it could be possible for these retro handheld companies to have some kind of licence with Nintendo/sega/sony/ect... ... It would be cool to have this happen

I liked the video, but allow me to disagree on 2 things: 1) "the 35xxSP is a great device" - from an engineering standpoint it's a bit too much form over function. The battery on top of the CPU without any thermal protection is bad design and asking for trouble. 2) one thing we learned (or should have learned) from the Steam deck is that we need more powerful Linux handhelds (midrange/$150 and above). People have been hyping the RK3588S SOC because it'll be the biggest chipset upgrade in a while that should run linux. Anything better than an rk3566 runs on Android with both its pros and cons (no true CFWs for example). ✌️

As wearisome as I've been finding Anbernic's ridiculously fast paced release cycle of pumping out a new device every 3 weeks and oversaturating the market, I think there's always going to be a demand for affordable and easy to use devices that can play all the games people are nostalgic for that may not be part of the small catalog of retro games available on the Switch and the like. There's definitely still room for improvement in the Android space too as prices on SD8 Gen 2 chips and the like come down, giving the consumer more power, bigger screens, better ergonomics, and so on for less money.
@adinwalls
Ай бұрын
Hey. Yes the Android space is very vibrant. Another thing I thought regarding Anbernic is that they have been fighting for dominance for a while, and I think they are simply trying to get ahead of everyone, like the Miyoo A30 and their upcoming flip

Yeah, you buy the 35XXH to have that first universal standard handheld with sticks, then maybe take a sidestep to "mini" which is charming and practical - Miyoo A30 or 28XX, and then it's the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and then potentially a SteamDeck if you're into that.

We are definitely in an interesting time for handheld gaming. The sheer amount of stuff popping up shows how accessible it is to make these now. Interesting video topic and format! After the form factor crazyness of the past 2 years my bet/hope is that manufacturers will sit on some designs and refine controls, battery, software and of course performance experience. Let finally let Miyoo’s release its Flip, and make a more powerful horizontal buttons with their craft.

I really enjoyed the introduction to your FPV channel and the correlation between the drone market and retro handhelds. These days I try to keep my purchases to those systems that are offering something different, but that is getting harder as most releases seem to be based on previous and/or competitor's success . When a generation maybe lasts a year, it gets harder to justify paying $300 - 400 for a system that doesn't offer much over the previous generation. Something I do have to add is that price wise, you can get an Ayn Odin 2 for around the same price as a switch, and it'll run a lot of switch games and a ton of other systems like PS2 that would never run on the switch. I think the reason the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro vids might be getting more traction is the PS2 emulation. 1. There's clearly a market for snes, gba, mega drive and arcade emulation but its a bit more niche than PS2, Gamecube, XBox, Dreamcast - both in terms of the explosion of home console gaming but also the age of the people who played them. PS2 released in 2000 and lasted 13 years. That entire pre teen generation is now mid thirties, early forties, still working, potentially with disposable income and the PS2 nostalgia hit is massive. 2. While you can emulate on steam deck, hacked switch, those devices also have the capability to play more modern titles, so great if you already own one, but you wouldn't purchase one just for PS2 emulation (unless you had loads of money). You mention the Ayn unit sales - I think this is why. Its a very expensive device for high end android gaming and emulation. 3. The above mentioned devices are portable, not pocketable. For plane journeys, hotels, holidays etc. they are fantastic. Whipping out your steam deck on the daily commute is less appealing, whereas RP4P (or the Anbernic RG556) bringing PS2 on the go in that small form factor at a reasonable price is huge for the market i think they're appealing to

The steamdeck wouldn't have made it to where it is without community involvement in all the projects it utilizes - Arch, glorious egg roll, etc. Sure you can run windows on it but why would you of you're not playing some MMO shooter that requires massively invasive anticheat, or one of the few other that seem to simply refuse to allow it help their game become supported on Linux. But often GE still comes to the rescue there. I think the steamdeck competitors have it on hardware, not the fact they run windows. But also they're more expensive with a worse OS so whatever gets favorite fun to boot, I guess.

i think they still have room to grow, it will always be a niche market with some high to low interest according to how gaming is generally doing. there will always be a market, how big tho, that is the question and maybe it will weed out the weak ones that aren't producing good products in the first place.

That’s an interesting topic and deserves a more extended and insightful reflection. What you think about future developments of handhelds might be right, but that is only one portion of “retro gaming.” The crucial aspect of retro gaming is precisely “gaming”. That is, the experience of people playing by pushing buttons or pads and moving control sticks in front of a screen to interact with a world contained inside the “games” (program + physical media); and the affective experience of mesmerizing joy involved in such interaction. That affect is crucial because now we, the first generations to be raised with “gaming” as part of our everyday childhood, experience it as nostalgia. And we now have the purchasing power to sustain a pseudo-industry of devices and software that links into our nostalgia. We, of course, also are at the right technological moment to do so. But along with the development of devices is that of software to play games, that has increasingly become more social (which also probably reveals our need to interconnect through a experience with which we are throughly familiar and comfortable), and of new games that embrace the “retro” as an aesthetic. Also, the new”retro” ales part of the education of young developers (from Minecraft to Arduboy). So, there’s a lot more to talk about retro gaming but this is too much already for a YT comment.
