Jack's playing is so unpredictable but so familiar . Seems like he could play for hours without falling into any cliched licks. I'd pay good money to have such an endless vocabulary . I think he's outgrown working in a guitar shop and needs to be heard by the masses. A real talent.

I've listened to so many of Jack's guitar and pedal demos that I've come to love the sound of the Maz 18. I mean, it doesn't hurt that Jack is an outstanding player and improviser. It's a bummer he's not with Peach anymore.

I’ve played for 45 years and never knew about how the les Paul changed over the years in so many ways, with exception of the 61-63 LP/SG thing. Thanks for the well researched info. Mine is a 1980 LP custom silverburst I bought new in late 1979. I hear the tonal difference from the ebony to rosewood in the board you talked about. I’ve always loved the headstocks and binding of my custom but recently I’ve wanted. More woody P90 growl. Perhaps I can look to the 59 for that. Thanks for a great video.

About 25 years ago I had the opportunity to borrow a genuine 58 Les Paul, which the owner - a Kent-based luthier - had, taken it upon himself to restore to new condition - he’d done a fantastic job, but of course it drastically reduced its value (he was asking just £5,000, which is ridiculously cheap for a genuine 58 Les Paul, right?). Anyway, at the soundcheck I really wasn’t that impressed with it, mainly due to what I perceived to be rather poor string-to-string balance. However, I used it on the actual gig (with Idaho legend Pinto Bennett, playing his original country-rock songs) and, boy, I was blown away. Judging it in isolation at the soundcheck was pointless; playing it for real with a cooking band, it was instantly “that sound” - the right sound. It was so authentic sounding and it just ROCKED! Unfortunately I didn’t have £5,000 to spend, so I had to give it back. I was a bona fide rocker for an evening!

Just really love the subtle color of faded 1959s. I wasn’t as big a fan of the neck size, much preferred the 1960 neck. I have a 60s special and I’m just more used to the slim taper necks.

Okay Hoss, the Custom was a three-pickup guitar in the '50s. And you are not hearing the "ebony board." That's silly. The Custom was 100 percent mahogany, hence the difference in tone.

Thanks Jack, really enjoyed this! Was really surprised that I liked the tone on the '61 Les Paul/SG the most. Just out of interest, how did the 1968 Les Paul fit into all of this? Would be great if you could make a series of these videos, charting the Gibson guitars through to the late 1970s. Also a series on the evolution of the ES series & The L-5 series. Fantastic, thank you!

When I was 18 I was known as “Gibson Lee” because I had a 72 Les Paul Deluxe (Wine Red), a 62 335 (Cherry Red) and, a few years later, an 80 Les Paul Custom (natural finish with three gold-plated pickups) and an S1 - I only ever had two of those Gibson guitars at the same time. The one I miss the most, my first Gibson Les Paul, was the wine red deluxe. I believed the Epiphone mini-humbuckers to be somehow inferior, but I was ill-informed; they were just different sounding (brighter and slightly less powerful than pickups fitted to a LP Standard). I haven’t owned a Gibson for almost 40 years now... Hearing those Les Pauls makes me hanker for one.
