Another Aaron Sorkin masterpiece. Sorkin himself is a ''greater fool'' for believing in the foundational principle of television. The public airwaves were given over to private companies with a mandate to improve the American people via information, art and intelligence. Quickly the networks became a tool of the advertisers and sunk to the lowest common denominator. They abandoned their promise and betrayed the country. Sorkin is one of the few who held fast to the promise of television. He taught us. He entertained us. He made us better. Thank you Mr Sorkin.

It’s actually amazing, even after that many times. I always choke up. Yeah, it’s corny. But in a good way. It makes me happy and hopeful, that people keep believing in these ideals. That people like Aaron Sorkin can write so absolutely perfect dialogue. “I know what a greater fool is. And I wanna be one.” Just pure perfection.

While I didn't know about how many people Socialism has killed (source on that?), can't that be said for just about every socio-economic political system inflicting casualties on mass in the name of their cause since the beginning of time. Or even in the name of religion? I'm curious why Socialism is your preferred reference. WW1 & 2 led to at least that many casualties and hardly did it in the name of Socialism.

I'll say this, I really, really loved The Newsroom. I loved The Newsroom for the same reasons I loved TWW: It's that blend of idealism and realism. It's Sorkin's desire and absolute talent to show what supremely capable, AND moral people look like. It's the writing, The magnifient, deep, intelligent, witty, funny, gritty and sophisticated dialogue. It's the romantic, naive, wishful, idealized characters. Like “Sorority Girl”. Like Will. Like Mac. Like Charlie. Like just about every main character. And all of this is encapsulated in this series of scenes. "I read the article. I know what a greater fool is. And I wanna be one." With a wry, self-conscious, yet hopeful smile. "What makes America the greatest country in the world?" "You do." No matter how many times I watch this exchange, having watched what led up to it, I cry. Literally (in the original meaning of the word ...) Why? Because, all evidence to the contrary, I still believe/hope that people like that can make a difference. Can reach the top. And, having reached the top, keep their ideals. I don't believe America is the greatest country in the world anymore. I unfortunately don't believe it can be anymore, either. But I do believe a country like the shining city on the hill is possible.

When people learn that we don’t have to be subservient to the two party disaster we accept as our rulers, we are the master. We need to take care of each other and boost each other up. We need to make the politicians follow the same rules they demand we follow. We allow the political elite to complain about the unfair rules they wrote! I still say the show is criminally underrated. It Hass to be one of the greatest short running shows I have ever seen in my entire goddamn life that sticks with me all the time it had a few ups and downs TV writing is hard and not knowing whether or not, you’re going to be able to flush stuff out, over the course of X amount of seasons makes it very hard to write effectively yet meaningfully and I can understand and appreciate that, but what is there is just awesome and some of it displays what we truly hope for out of our fellow men and women, and should strive for. It shows how flawed we can be yet the level of greatness we could achieve not for fame or money, but because it feels right, it is right. Fighting for truth, honor, humility, decency, those should be the qualities of our journalists… what are journalists do today should be limited to the tabloid circuits.

She's not the Greater Fool. She's the kid at the end of Camelot. Will is the Greater Fool because he's choosing to make a news show that is harder to produce, gets worse ratings and gets him(and the network) tons of heat. It would be much easier to not rock the boat but he does it anyway because it's the right thing to do. King Arthur has a similar story. He tries to make the world a better place at great cost to himself. At the end of Camelot, as he prepares for battle, King Arthur meets a young boy who talks about his belief in Arthur's ideals and his desire to join the battle, fight for Camelot and become a Knight of the Round Table. Arthur knights the boy and commands him to run behind the lines and survive the battle so that he can deliver the message/ideals of Camelot to future generations. The boy at the end of Camelot and Jennifer both represent hope for the future. They are meant to carry the torch when Arthur and Will are gone.

A lot of people moan and complain about Sorkin’s preachiness and moralising. The thing is, Sorkin is usually right about whatever it is that he’s going on about. When you’re a good deal smarter than most people, considerably more informed than most people, and less blinkered by dogma and ideology than most people, it’s hard to not get preachy. When you see a little kid trying to do maths and they add 9 and 7 and get 11, we can all find our patience and encouraging tone. When a 50yo white man is fighting vigorously for the right to life of an unborn one month old foetus and then on the next day lobbying hard for the state sanctioned murder of a 15 year old black boy... it’s hard not to point out the hysterical hypocrisy, the racism, the stupidity. The first scene where Will says America isn't the greatest country in the world is a tease. It gets your attention. But people tend to forget the next part--the sign that Mac holds up that says, "But it can be." The Newsroom is not about why America isn't the greatest country. The Greater Fool is an economic term used to describe a person an investor would unload a risky investment on. They're a mark. The person on the short end of a scam. The writer of the New York Magazine article uses it as a sarcastic insult about Will and his lofty ideals. They(Will and the News Night crew) take on the insult as a badge of honor. Jennifer says she too wants to be a Greater Fool because she understands his ideals and believes in them even if it does make her look foolish in the eyes of some. She's the kid at the end of Camelot. She represents hope for the future.
@michaelmilsom9518
7 жыл бұрын
A very thoughtful answer. Nicely written :-) Just to respectfully expand on why the 'kid at the end of Camelot' means hope for the future (taken from Wikipedia) Prior to the battle, Arthur stumbles across a young boy named Tom, who wishes to fight in the battle and become a Knight of the Round Table. Tom espouses his commitment to Arthur's original ideal of "Not might 'makes' right, but might 'for' right." Arthur realizes that, although most of his plans have fallen through, the ideals of Camelot still live on in this simple boy. Arthur knights Tom and gives him his orders-run behind the lines and survive the battle, so he can tell future generations about the legend of Camelot. Watching Tom leave, Arthur regains his hope for the future ("Camelot (reprise)").

Eh ... So - I formed an opinion from watching these things - but didn't want to comment as I hadn't actually watched the show. So - I watched several episodes of the show. This show is a fantasy. It is a show about people who want to go back to doing serious Journalism - and not have everything dependent on their ratings. That's what the show is about. It would never happen. The people doing the news have always been all about money. And that IS an issue the people on this show have to deal with. It's just that they wouldn't have to deal with it - because they'd never do it in the first place. The REASON - that they didn't have the type of sensationalism in the past - was because they didn't know they could make money. The FCC - REQUIRED the networks to do a certain amount of public service broadcasting in return for being allowed to use the air ways. But - people watched Watergate - and the Networks realized they could make money off the news (!!!!!). That changed everything. It's a big long thing so I'll let it go at that but the news today - especially on cable - is just horrific. The Network News isn't that bad. The other thing is though - is this show - is part of the same Liberal Media people as you have in even the Network News. That Liberal Jerk Off Sam Waterson - remarks how Walter Cronkite ended the Vietnam war - as if that was a good thing. Millions of people died because we abandoned Southeast Asia the way we had abandoned China and would abandon Afghanistan. Jeff Daniels does a great job but the basic idea of the show - is bull shit. No one would ever do it. .
