Interesting. I am not a traditional mate drinker, though I am from the land where Ka'a originated, Paraguay, but do brew it daily, this is commonly known as "cocido" by Paraguayans. I have to add milk, and a bit of sugar, seat at the morning table and accompany it with bread and butter, toast, chipa, or some other pastries. Jorgue Guerra here on KZitem briefly touches the mate subject when going over the independences of latin American countries from their European Lords. There, he mentions that mate was very valuable towards the end of the conquest, it needed to be taken from the La Plata region to Peru and Bolivia, given to the enslaved Indians who work in the mines of gold and silver. Mate helped these individuals detox from the highly body damaging chemicals used in the production of these precious metals. Just wanted to add this note. Buen trabajo amigo. Che aguyjete ndeve.

Thanks, Dave! Technically, the Southern Cone only covers Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay but sometimes Southern Brazil and Paraguay are included in the broader definition. Also Yerba Mate is widely consumed in Southern Chile, namely, Araucanía, Los Lagos, Aysén, and Magallanes. In those regions of Chile its the most popular drink over coffee and traditional tea. In fact, Yerba Mate was formerly the most popular drink up to the 19th century in Chile before they developed strong trade links with the British via the port of Valparaiso. From that time on European coffee and tea became more popular in the central part of the country though in the South and rural areas the mate culture persisted.

@@Circleofdrink No problem. I live in the United States now but grew up in Southern Chile (Magallanes region of Patagonia) which shares more in common with Argentina than other regions of Chile. In short, everyone drank mate and has for generations. My family migrated to Magallanes in the late 19th century from England, Croatia, and Chiloé Island to work as sheep farmers.

Thank you so much for this informative video ~ we often forget how imperialism and colonialism has influenced the shades of consumerism and systematic oppression via capitalism that we know today.

I just made my first cup with a bombilla after years of brewing various other ways, like french press, strained, cold brewed... This is a whole new level of connection to the drink, it actually changes everything! literally everything :) you're also pulling water through the leaves differently, a little suction like which is probably drawing more molecules out of the leaves. This feels SO GOOD HOLY HELL!!!!! 1000x better out of the straw instead of brewed!

I think the trick is to not boil your water! Just let it get almost! Very hot! I noticed when boiled it seems to take away something! I make a pitcher of roasted and non-roasted with honey elderberry -sometimes a squeeze of lemon! The best addiction I ever had!
