One of the most interesting Elizabethan figures was Sir Walter Raleigh, a man who was considered charming and handsome, and who spent a lot of his time fighting England’s enemies and looking for land to conquer and claim. Raleigh was a leading part of the colonisation of North America, and he was a favourite of Elizabeth I. However after the death of the Tudor Queen, Raleigh found himself imprisoned inside of the Tower of London, and he was later brought to an execution scaffold in London after he was sentenced to death for committing an act of war against the Spanish. James I the successor of Elizabeth was greatly concerned about this, and to appease the Spanish he would order the execution of Raleigh which was not very popular across the Kingdom. But following his execution, Sir Walter Raleigh’s head went on a remarkable journey after his death, and his wife would keep this with her in a velvet bag until she died. But what is the story of this?
