In fact, the request from a distant relative in 2006 to have his remains returned to Scotland was denied, as both the Danish Church and the Danish authorities did not wish the grave to be disturbed. One can clock the otherside of Leeds the small thorpe spelled “Guiseley” Rather oddsomely, Mary Qween of Scots had two dodgy uncles whilst her king, Lord Darnley also had two (lesserly known) dodgy uncles. Both sets of uncles were seriously dodgy and big timers in the occult world. Both the bloody Medici and bloody Guise are said to of hated England/the British isles. In the 1960s, I was raised in Denmark, and saw the body several times. It was in the cellar of a fairly small rural church, nowhere near København (Copenhagen), the name of which now escapes me. I note that some mention Fårevejle Church, but I don't recall the one I am thinking about as being that large and impressive. But I could be wrong, as I was not interested in the church, just in Bothwell's corpse (I thought it was Boswell). Yes, I was a proper little ghoul! The place was very informal and relaxed and, if it was not a busy day, one had to ask for a key if one wanted to go down to have a look. The body was in a box with a stout glass lid. I know the glass was stout, because I once got prodigiously told off when my parents found me lying right on top of it, because I wanted to get a better look at the feller. One thing you could not miss, was that Bothwell's thingy was pointing straight up at the ceiling. I have no idea if he died like that, or if someone with a sense of humour embalmed him like that, but here we are. Sadly, I understand that some time later, the Danes elected to bury him (again). I therefore do not think he is now missing, as such, just no longer on display as an interesting exhibit. That's a shame, because morbid things like that are utterly fascinating and bring history to life, as it were.

Mary, Queen of Scots, may inspire lots of stories. But she really wasn't a great example of a historical monarch. Queen Elizabeth I really did not want to execute her cousin, but with the Protestant vs. Catholic conflict still very much ongoing and Queen Mary's willingness to allow herself to become embroiled in so many plots, it essentially doomed her. She was very much overshadowed and exploited by the men around her, unlike Queen Elizabeth who avoided marriage precisely because she did not want to have to deal with the question of how much power a Queen's husband should have over his wife.

Elizabeth did not marry, but had many lovers. She was no "Virgin Queen"! Elizabeth did not make herself loved by a large proportion of her people.

@@AV-fo5de - Yes, but lovers do not raise the issue of whether they might be "king". Only a husband would. The Catholic vs Protestant divide was massive, bloody, and what later inspired the Founding Fathers of the U.S. to prohibit government establishment of religion. After hearing his story it is hard to know whether to feel any sympathy. Political figures at this time, like Bothwell, played a dirty ruthless game to get ahead in life, and would dispose of anyone in the way of their goals and need to be wealthy. Bothwell is fairly typical of the courtiers and people jostling for position and placement in high society at this time, and his treatment of Women in particular earns him no sympathies... The fairest assessment of his life and his fate is really that he got what he had earned in life - he had crossed and abused so many people through his adult life that it is some justice that even in far away Denmark/Norway he had no way of knowing that one of his ex's lived there, and would help to see that he payed for past behavior. If anything this is a story of Karma, he _earned_ his own fate.

So he assaults her and she marries him? Not buying it specially because they had a close friendship before. How many subjects had a queen attending them in person when they are ill? I mean by this formula if the English nobles and her council wanted Elisabeth to marry one could have just raped her (which sadly may have happen but she had the head to not marry her possible abuser). Like imagine someone manages enter the Elisabeth the I rooms, kidnaps her abused her and then goes like “now you must marry me”. Once the ordeal is over and she is free to go maybe with a promise with a marriage I can see her ordering the immediate arrest and a fate worse than of those “gentleman” who plotted to kill her. Their execution was long and well it was basically public torture once there was a list of “horrible things to do” she asked “is there something else we can add?”. And they didn’t even manage to put a finger on her .

I think it's somewhat likely that the Queen of Scots HAD had affection for Bothwell before the marriage (and even at the start of it) but it quickly got turned to ashes via his abuse and adultery and she wanted out ASAP. One thing is known is that once he was forced away from her, she made zero efforts to try to see him again or even plea for him to be freed.

Looks like he got his comeuppance. And had Mary Queen of Scott's been a man and Queen Elizabeth also a man Queen Elizabeth coukd have killed her outright in battle with no repercussions or a second thought at all for trying to take her throne. Imo she was gracious beyond all to keep MAry for nearly 2 decades in any state of comfort beyond a dungeon.

Indeed Mary’s biggest mistake was to put her eyes into the English throne when she had her own kingdom to rule. No wonder being so distracted dreaming about someone else’s riches she never managed to be competent in her job as a ruler and win her people. If only she used her head for something more than look for husband she would have kept her throne and would have had her son as heir of to Elisabeth because she had no one else. Asking a living monarch to name you her heir it’s the same as say “can you firm your death sentence I want your throne”. I always say never beg ask or demand if people believe you worthy they will grant you what you deserve. Personally I’m a generous person and Indo love make gifts but when someone asks me for something I feel they are not entitled to ask because it’s something I should decided if give it not I one for a fact that even if I wanted to give something to this person or make a favor now certainly won’t just by the way they asked it. Mary Queen of Scots believed herself entitled to an already occupied throne by a competent Queen and she didn’t shy to talk about it and ask Elisabet to make her her heir. So obviously Elisabet who maybe even thought about it decided not to. Her son being raised a Protestant was a plus in the end I feel like Elisabeth knew that her son will succeed her, being a Protestant and the closest Royal relative it was only natural. If only Mary could have seen it and accept it and for the sake to of her so. Forget about her religious bullshit not being the alternative catholic queen on Protestant England soil she probably would have been accepted at court as a refuge l, maybe even reunited with her son once he had the throne but nope she decided to be extremely contra productive. How a woman who murdered her own husband (even if he deserved it), probably cheated on him and claimed to be raped to justify a marriage needs to make this religious war, she was far from the perfect catholic so just accept Protestant religion live and let the other Queen live without a cos ya t paranoia and the dread of knowing that sooner or later she will have to chop your head.

It's not true what you say that his remains are lost. All they did was to take away the glass lid so you can't see him anymore. As far as I know he was never in a museum but has always been in that church. He was dressed in fine clothing though they hadn't wanted to spend a lot of money on him. You can still go see his casket.

@@susanmccormick6022 Yes, but did portrait painters back then always capture their subjects? Look at the statue of Princess Diana unveiled by the two sons. That thing was terrifying. Huge shoulders, thick, like a male bodybuilder. A man's face and head, with big hands, and a pair of matronly shoes. Unforgivable. Closer to Sir Winston Churchill as a young man than feminine, beautiful Diana.

According to Danish records, Bothwell is still resting in his oak sarcofagus in Fårevejle Kirke, undisturbed. The church has maintained and protected the grave for 400 years, and the request in 2006 from a distant relative to have the remains returned to Scotland was denied, as no1 wanted the grave peace broken. It was fairly common practice for the families and supporters of important people to pay a ransom for them. Interesting that no one did or, if one WAS offered, that it wasn't accepted. There was good money to be made and they could have requested much more than the value of the original dowry. Perhaps his friends and family also thought he was as unpleasant as he sounds.

The king of Denmark actually wanted to random Bothwell off, and kept him prisoner just for that reason. He even offered his prisoner to Elizabeth I, but she wasn't interested. After it became clear Mary wasn't going to be returned to her throne in Scotland, Bothwell was thrown into the dungeon and forgotten. Strangely enough though, Bothwell's mother wrote Mary Stuart a letter showing she still loved her son. Why she didn't try to get him out, I don't know. Maybe she didn't have the money or political position.
