I met Kalapana in 1975 at Claremont Men's College when I was the entertainment editor of a the five college newspaper there. I interviewed them, attended a recording session and spent a fair bit of time with them. Hit it off enough their producer invited me to go back to Hawaii with them over my christmas break from school - an offer I still kick myself for not accepting!

What makes me most depressed is that Mackey was such a beautiful person and got so screwed over so badly by someone who he loved and he could not bear to hang on. Also that he never received the writing praises nor commercial success that Kalapana were due. I can't blame him for giving up though this world has some dark forces lurking behind pretty faces, law makers and law enforcement sometimes. He really got a bad deal and his punishment truly did not fit the crime. Shameful of both his wife and the system. My only hope is that he is at peace and God's forgiveness was granted for his own suicide.
