I grew up 1 block from the Cafe...the original one and the new one...Miss Bess Fortenberry owned and ran the Cafe...the Fortenberrys were an old time family here in Irondale. I grew up there from the 40s, 50s, 60s until I married... mother lived there until she died in 2004 (Daddy died young in the early 70s) Our family was an old family with roots in this town...my maiden name was Massey...Bess was a beloved character...she was a friend to all...she attended the First Baptist Church with our family and her family home was across from the church...yes, the RR was a big part of our town and I was lulled to sleep each night with the sounds of the trains passing through... Bess was a good friend to the men who worked for the RR and the Cafe was a gathering place for the men with good BBQ and beer!...with all of the home cooking too!...growing up in Irondale was a magical time of innocence with great memories!!!🦋

I enjoyed visiting the Irondale Cafe this past Sunday with everyone! The food was very tasty with that southern hospitality feel. Thank you Christy for sharing with us a little history of the cafe and the train station of Irondale. I would give it a big thumbs up and a swirly of the fork!

This looks great! Love fried green tomatoes! I have been to the Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliet, GA. The food is great. You sit on the porch and wait for them to call your name. They have servers. I prefer that to cafeteria style and don’t like the idea of standing in line. I’m 76 so not easy to do for very long.

I have never in my lifetime had fried green tomatoes. Never. I didn't even know one could eat green tomatoes!! I loved the retro atmosphere of the Irondale Cafe -- I'd love to go eat there some day, but I've a long way to go to try it out! There's nothing like it in Ottawa, Canada.

Glad you liked the Irondale Cafe. I grew up going to the original when I was a little girl because my Aunt Bess owned it. I love that its history is being honored and enjoyed still today. Thank you for this video.
