my grandad ran a corner shop in the 60s 70s the shop was the hub of the community and many had to get food cigs and other things on tick till pay day this song always reminds me that my grandad strived for better but at the same time he was focused on the meaning of community and playing his role in it sad that it seems to have gone these days shame

Shame Paul Weller had to kill the Jam. Could of took a break, and done his Style Council project, or incorporated those elements into the Jam. Their sound was evolving anyway so it could of worked with Rick and Bruce.

People can point out musicians who “technically” are better than these 3, and there are much better singers than Weller that have been around but when this band played together there was an energy and passion that resonated with me as a kid. I liked other bands that tapped in to the anger of the young at the time but nobody was consistently pairing the energetic music with such socially aware lyrics like these were. By the time All Mod Cons came out these were already the best band in the world to me and they still are now. Lyrically, Weller is a genius, there’s been nobody like him for me, as a kid I thought the jam was fighting my battles for me, they hated and loved the same things I did, and now as I hurtle towards my 60’s and I put on my Jam LP’s I still think the same.

They aren't communistic. They actually describe "the American dream". And there is too much God talk to be Communistic. Sounds like a typical working class song. They should have bigger over here that's for sure.

The song is about class jealousy. In the end, it doesn't matter because everyone is sick of "struggling so hard". Weller is neither the man in the corner shop or the factory worker and has an outside of view and is entitled to write this song which is a commentary about class jealousy. At the end of the week, everyone goes to church and prays to the same God and puts up with their own struggles. No one is any better off than anyone else is what Weller is saying. This song resonates alot with today's workers. Would you rather work for a large corporate entity or would you rather be an entrepreneur and be your own boss, really?
