I remember my Japanese professor sent this to our class. I have good memories of watching Japanese Tradition in labs and laughing so hard I was crying. She had a great sense of humour. Sadly she died of cancer in 2015. Thank you for the laughs, Sensei.

It's important to understand that this was made in Japan by Japanese and intended for a Japanese audience, as part of a series of "mockumentaries" that satirise the often wildly inaccurate foreign perceptions of Japanese customs. The percentage of people that don't realise it's a joke is statistically insignificant.

i understood that it's comedic since some parts were too absurd to be real, but some of it sounds like genuine advice, like what to say when entering and leaving the establishment or asking if the seat is taken or not so i'm a bit confused now whether it's satire too and you shouldn't do that

4:10 - Even if it's just for a comedy show, preparing a finger of sushi rice both so exceptionally cohesive that it survives being soaked so thoroughly in the sauce without losing a single grain, yet being non-sticky that it doesn't glue together fingers, counter, the pantsu of the maid from the previous shot, the curtains at the entrance, and everything in a three-kilometre epicentre just by its mere existence, is an outstanding feat of Japanese cooking craftsmanship. Or just good set dressing.

I'll be honest, I don't know much about Japan and am much interested in it. I know they have different habits than in Europe (/usa) and some things surprised me (these aren't fake), so naturally I can be gullible when it comes to videos like this even if some stuff feels a bit off... So I am glad I found the video on youtube (I saw it on fb initially, with no comments nor description stating it's a joke) to see it was actually just a joke. I find it reassuring though, aha EDIT: okay, i watched it again entirely and now I see the humour being obvious... especially from the dustcloth part. the geta part should have ticked me though.

This video combines internal jokes with real facts that make this video great. The viewer has to have understanding of the (at least as much as japanese ancestors) japanese culture. Otherwise the video is just rude and nonsense! The reason why there is no sub in the original video is pretty obvious that the content is for japanese people rather than for foreigners.
