Hello! A lovely married JW couple used to visit me frequently during my agnostic days. We’d read the Bible together, but we’d mostly read from their own JW-approved literature. They gave me one of their Bibles and I used to look forward to our weekly studies so much so, that I started considering converting to their religion, until one day, I had this overwhelming urge to read The Gospel According To John. I would never read the Bible until we were all gathered, but this day as already stated, I had to read John’s Gospel from the start and in the JW Bible it says that “…The Word was with God and The Word was a God…” Well this had a very profound affect on me. How could this be? Did they believe in two gods?!? When I asked them about this verse, the wife thought somebody had put me up to this type of questioning and they were very vague with their answers. In the end, they told me not to worry about it and they basically tried to sweep it under the rug. Now to me, this was a huge deal and caused great suspicion, so I started looking more into the JW belief system and what the non-jw Bible actually teaches and to this day, I truly believe the Holy Spirit was showing me to avoid this religion. This was during a time when I was extremely vulnerable and all praise goes to The Almighty One who saved me that day. It was also the same day that I learned that everything we think, say and feel outside of Christ, is sinful. My mind was completely blown and He still amazes me every day. I thank God for Himself. He is my comforter and protector, amen.

One of my neighbors is a JW. He converted from Catholicism. He approached me one day in my yard while I was walking my dog. At first he was talking about God but I sensed that something wasn’t quite right and then I started asking questions. But I immediately felt unprepared to handle the conversation, which made me feel ashamed. So I started studying what they believe. Meanwhile he was preparing to confront me again with a fellow Jw in order to convert me. I knew that I had to stand firm on my faith in the Trinity. But once I did that (however politely I went about it) he refused to ever speak with me again. He won’t look at me, speak to me, or acknowledge my existence. Well done on being respectful and having a conversation. I've been a JW for a long time and it's very rare that I've met anyone willing to engage or defend their own faith in this way. I hope you don't mind but I'll have a go at addressing one point. Your first point about Jehovah alone being the creator. The Bible in a few places does make comparable statements, but then includes others as being involved. We would argue that Jehovah alone is the source of the activity but it's carried out by others, hence it wouldn't be contradictory. So if I say that I sold my house, this wouldn't exclude agents being involved in the process, but I had initiated it and been in charge of it. Biblically when talking about leading the Israelites out of Egypt: Deuteronomy 32:12 _"The LORD alone led him."_ But we know from Exodus that Moses was instructed to lead the Israelites with an angel: Exodus 32:34 _"Now go, lead the people to the place I described. Behold, My angel shall go before you. But on the day I settle accounts, I will punish them for their sin."_ There are other examples, one more. When discussing the rebuilding of Israel, Ezekiel says that Jehovah would do it. However, the work was done by his people under his direction. Ezekiel 36:36 _"Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.'"_ We would argue that this is the same for Jehovah and Jesus. Jehovah, created things *through* Jesus, so Jehovah is the source and Jesus is the agent. 1 Corinthians 8:6: _"yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."_ Indeed Jesus said that he cannot do anything by himself, but instead only what he sees the father doing and Jesus life was granted by the Father: John 5:19: _"Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does."_ John 5:26: _"For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself."_ Isaiah discusses Jehovah's involvement in creation as active, whereas Jesus involvement is described as passive. The context of Isaiah is the Jews being in exile and comforted by Jehovah, that he is the only true God, and all the other Gods they see around them in Babylon are false. Jehovah needed no assistance from these false Gods create. Christ’s involvement in creation is never described as acting independently.

I thank God that Jesus has proved himself reliable to answer all the big questions of life: origins, destination, morality, and meaning. Attempts to undermine the veracity of the Bible have failed for millennia. The Bible has been proven reliable historically and archaeologically, and fulfilled prophecy proves its Divine origin. The historic resurrection proves that Jesus is in fact, God. He fulfilled numerous specific prophecies, claimed to be God in the flesh, and then backed it up by rising from the dead. When anyone claims that we can’t know the answers, or something is not possible, they don’t realise that the answers have already been revealed. All of this truth is well-established, and even a cursory look on the Internet will reveal the evidence for this. The problem is that they don’t want to believe. They set up an arbitrary, objective standard of evidence, (which means nothing), so in their minds they feel justified in not believing. But all the evidence is there 😃

Another great idea for dealing with the JW's that I heard from Mike Winger was this, take one thing that they believe and learn everything that you can about it and dial down on that one subject. For instance for me it would be their belief in everyone gets a second chance after they die in the 1000 year period and they are working to clean up the world and telling everyone about Jehovah then if they are loyal and do good enough then they get to live in paradise on earth forever. This is a huge deal to these people and the WT dangles this carrot in front of their faces all the time. Jesus as Michael the arch angel is another one to do. Just become really good at one subject. Matt, you nailed it when you said JWs do not comprehend the theology of the Trinity. I am a former JW. I was introduced to the faith from the age of 11. Although I had a solid relationship with Christ pre-JWs, I had not had much scriptural training or deep theological understanding at that age. JWs told me that they had the "True" understanding of the Bible, and practiced "True Religion." Spiritually eagar and appropriately niave, I, of course, believed them! The point I'm aiming for is this: I did not have an understanding of the Trinity when I began Bible study with JW. They had to teach me what they believe about the Trinity, in order to then teach me why it isn't true - according to Watchtower. Consequently, to this day (I am 63) I still do not have a very good grasp of the theology. (You did catch my ear when you said that the difference lies in the meaning of "person" verses "being.") It is very difficult to break through to JWs. Their entire religion revolves around their faith in and loyalty to the Governing Body being the one and only way to salvation into God's Kingdom. (I know, I know. The irony is completely lost on them.) Despite that, more JWs are waking up to the fact that they've been misled than are staying in the religion, and their numbers just keep shrinking. In addition, there are large numbers of practicing JWs who no longer believe. They stay only because if they leave, they will be cut off from all family and friends who are believers. Matt, one last thing I wish to share with you. EXJW Analyser just re-posted a Video which has been instrumental in waking up JWs by clearly exposing Watchtower's fallacies. And it's done through using Watchtower's own teachings. As you have a heart to bring JWs to Christ, I encourage you to view it. (32 min.) I will try to post a link. In case I don't succeed, you can easily find it on the channel (EXJW Analyser.) The video title is, "Father WAKES UP Son From Cult of Jehovah's Witnesses."
Bless you, brother, for standing strong on God's Word. I live in a secured building now, so I don't have to deal with it anymore. It never mattered how polite and respectful I was when declaring that I was a Born Again Christian, and that we would have to just agree to disagree, because they are relentless. They are very convinced that they can change your mind. Nope. Not happening. ✝️

Usually I avoid the JWs, tired of debating them over and over for decades, but I did entertain them the last time they came to my door. I asked them if they were trying to evangelize people that were already Christians, they said No! Then I asked them if they were trying to pull people away from their existing churches to come to their Church, they said No! Then I said "Well then, I'll let you go so you can talk to non Christians or those that don't have a church". Goodbye. Edit: For the record, my final response was after 15 minutes of back and forth through the scriptures. I also invited them back to learn the truth of non Watchtower Christianity. They never took up the invite.

I decided last year that if they come to my door I would talk to them. I used to alway tell them I wasn't interested. My experience with them is if you know scripture they leave very quickly. I had two women come to my door a few weeks ago. They came to the door claiming to be a neighbor checking in on how everyone is doing. They said their church wanted to check in with everyone. I asked what church. The kingdom hall is 20 miles from me. they are very distant neighbors lol. The women were really focused on Jesus being in the image of God but not God. He was a created being. I recently found a great scripture to bring up to them in John 14: 8-11 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. I'm in the process of watching Billy Crones series on the Jehovah witnesses so I can be better prepared the next time they come to the door.

Then others, like this video, say Jesus is a separate person yet one in essence with the father. There are several versions of the trinity that I come across. Genesis 2:24 And the man and woman become one(Echad) same word is used for God in Deut.6:4 Hear oh Israel YHWH is our Elohim YHWH is echad. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. 14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us... Or 1John 5:20 - We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in Him who is true by being in His Son Jesus Christ. HE IS THE TRUE GOD AND ETERNAL LIFE. ❤ Ephesians 2:8-9 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- NOT BY WORKS, SO THAT NO ONE CAN BOAST. 🎁 Jesus died on the cross, taking our punishment for our sins even though he was sinless. ✝️ He shed his precious, holy, innocent blood for us so that we could be forgiven. ❣️ He rose from the dead, ascended into heaven after 40 days, and is preparing a place for his followers, those who put their faith and hope in his finished work on the cross! Praise the Lord that when I finally fessed up to my non-JW Christian husband, he calmly told me to start reading the book of John in a Bible of my choice other than the new world translation. My sense was that in a seemingly acceptable way they loved God with all their heart, they hungered and thirsted after righteousness, they prayed without ceasing.... They embraced Jesus as their Savior.... they clearly were loving and friendly people... sure they had some different points of view about things than standard Christianity but do I think God the Loving Father's place for them in eternity is going to be hell? Probably I don't. Or almost certainly I don't. Of course I believe Jesus is God. if someone is following Jesus in just the same way that I am but their understanding can't quite get to a place of embracing him as that it doesn't feel like a guarantee that for that reason Jesus will be excluding them from this: "When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we first begun." ...

It’s worth noting that Jesus was ethnically Jewish. Judaism is a monotheistic religion worshipping one God, YHWH. There would be no such teaching of anything Trinitarian in likeness (we know the word Trinity doesn’t even occur in the bible) The Jehovah’s Witnesses seem to have the main basic doctrines right, and are not the only ones who don’t believe in the Trinity doctrine. Many Christians have seen the falsehood of this blasphemous teaching that directs worship away from God, and obscures him from the centre of it. Many Christians are aware of the pagan ancient cultures who had divine triads, like the Egyptians (Osiris, Isis, Horus) or Romans (Jupiter, Neptune, Pluto). The Romans tainted pure worship with their beliefs, like the celebration of Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, the Roman holiday that celebrated the birthday of the unconquered sun (Sol Invictus) on December 25th, which many Christians now celebrate as Jesus’ Birthday, which is ironic as Jesus never celebrated it being a Jew, and wasn’t born anywhere near December time. Then we have the pagan Spring Equinox Celebrations when pagan cultures celebrated renewed life and fertility around the spring equinox. These celebrations involved symbols of rebirth, like eggs and rabbits, which found their way into Easter traditions. Many Christians today, ignore the fact their celebrations are based on paganism and have no part of Christianity. The JW’s along with some other Christians have got these basics right. Scoffing at a couple of JW’s who came to your door and didn’t know how to respond to your randomly plucked scripture which you’ve applied to your mind, doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re talking about, it means they want to go away and do research so they can give you bible truths as opposed to musings of their own. The Bible is a big book - no man knows and understands it fully. However, God gives understanding to the meek. Psalm 25:9 A few scriptures to consider on why Jesus isn’t God. Here are just a few, however, there are hundreds more. There is no confusion on this matter, when you consider all the scriptures in context and use truthful translations as well: Mark 10:18: "And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.” Here, Jesus separates himself from being God himself. Matthew 24:36: "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." This verse shows limitations in Jesus' knowledge if he, unlike the Father, doesn't know the day of judgement. John 14:28: "You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” Here, Jesus explicitly states the Father's greater status. John 17:3: "And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." This verse emphasises the Father as the one true God, with Jesus separate. Deuteronomy 6:4: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one." This core principle of Judaism contradicts the idea of three persons in one God.

I asked my mom when she went to the hall to question the dashes and the words taken out. She was told the wrong scriptures were taken out and that's what the dashes meant. I threw the witness bible away. One problem with discussing the bible with them is they attend weekly "ministry school" which trains them how to evade anything they can't prove. It's a sad cult. They start you out with the thought of paradise and once you're in the fear mongering begins. You abide by their rules from "mother society" in Bethel in NY or you're dead in God's eyes. Helpful. I was in a coffee shop today and about 8 JWs came and sat down having just stood near our railways station with their materials. I hope next time to engage them a bit more - especially on Jesus. My last conversation I had with some a few weeks back was on John 20 and Thomas' words addressed to Jesus "My Lord and my God." They weren't quite sure what to do with that - one suggested that Thomas was uttering words of shock rather than a statement of faith in Jesus (which was weird given how Jesus responds to Thomas). We also talked about there being more than one God. In Isaiah 64:9 God declares "I am God and there is no other." Obviously there are "gods" which are denounced as not the true God, so we can assume they are false. But that leaves us with a very binary option - either Jesus is God (as much/fully as the Father is God) or he is a false God. Thanks again, Andrew (Chesham, UK)

I have recently changed by approach to merely stating that I know I have salvation because of John 3:16, Joel 2:31-32 and Roman 10:9. I refuse to be diverted into irrelevant verses that they try to use and tell them that I have a personal relationship with Jesus, and the ‘works‘ that I do are as a result of that salvation and my love for Him and not a prerequisite.

With the greatest respect, how many Christians actually go out in pairs, sharing Gods Word? Whislt these good people have another theology, right or wrong........only God knows our hearts. As a mental health nurse, I can honestly say that JW have saved lives of people on the brink of suicide. My patients words. As a Christian, both a generalist and mental health nurse, seeing many, many peoples of varying belifes and faith, I still see Jesus in all. My actions I pray, be my witness.

From a naturalistic or utiliatarian perspective, many groups can produce much good. From the perspective of truth, the JW sadly believe in a false Jesus and a false gospel, that cannot save them. They may he sincere, but a person can be sincere but sincerely wrong. Someone can think that gravity doesn’t apply to them, and jump off a building. No matter how much they believe it, they will still hit the ground! This is tragic. I pray they would come to faith in the true Jesus of the Bible, and accept the true gospel that can save them!

Great post, some wonderful scriptures used. Keep in mind, JWs are generally zealous and God fearing people, but have been misled by the organisation, run by men. Typically, they will use scripture out of context (especially through their Watchtower magazines which have their Sunday study article the whole congregation does), and follow the Bible as if still under the law, not by grace. Thank you again for sharing. Take care.

I work with JWs and they don't really like to talk much with me. I always ask questions about what they say along the lines of, the Bible says this, why is that different from what you're telling me? Once they get one or two questions like that they don't want to talk anymore and I end up disappointed because I'm hoping they'll be open to hearing the gospel. I've invited a coworker that I work with directly on a daily basis to talk about his beliefs, not even a debate but just sharing, and he said he doesn't do that at work. Witnesses who don't witness because they're afraid to hear something that might possibly change their minds. How about that.

@@Mr.DC3.1914 this is off topic. But tell me your address and I will send you my book, The Great I AM. I go through the whole Bible showing the connection between the I AM God of the old testament and Jesus's assertion that he is the same I AM. Jesus is God, was called Lord and God in the new testament and is worshipped as God by the angels. Angels do not worship other angels. You need to actually read what the Bible says in context. And maybe watch Dr. Michael Hieser, Sam Shamoun and chicken scratch apologetics to gain an understanding of how wrong JW theology is. It isn't even a false gospel, since it makes no claims to offering a way of salvation in light of the fact that JW doctrine teaches only some go to heaven. But all who confess that Jesus is Lord and believe he was raised from the dead shall be saved.

As an exJW, you are absolutely right about them not understanding the trinity. They are taught that trinitarians believe in what is essentially modalism. Thats where you will be them trying "gotcha" questions like "If Jesus IS God then who was he praying too?" The unfortunate thing is I knew several former christians (both catholic and protestant) who converted and told me a big reason was they asked the pastor to explain the trinity and he would give the old three forms of water or the egg analogy, or say its a mystery with no real scriptural support to help see the hermeneutics of the trinity. A lot of christians I feel take things like the trinity for granted and can be caught off guard when someome shows up confidentiality showing them scriptures that seem to refute their base beliefs. A church and pastor who puts its people on solid foundation is so critical against cult lies.

@@DJevnikar-xl5sx Catholicism declares Mary to be "Mediatrix," which is blatant heresy. I was catholic for 30 years and easily left it when I began to actually read and study my bible, where there are SO many contradictions to catholic teaching, sorry. It didn't take me long to see that, and I left on the "Mary" issues alone, because you can't know and truly understand what the bible actually teaches AND still remain a catholic. The Holy Spirit gives you that kind of discernment when you BELIEVE the words in the bible and know how to "rightly divide the word of truth," 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV. I thank God every day I was saved out of catholicism. I'm 70 years old and a saved bible believer, I Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV. I Timothy 2:5 KJV: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;" Mary cannot intercede for you; only Jesus can do that. HE is the Saviour, not Mary. Why pray to a woman who KNEW she was a sinner according to scripture? As a devout Hebrew woman under the Old Testament law, she was obedient and knew she HAD to make an offering for sin. See Luke 2:22-24 KJV and especially all of Leviticus 12; she knew she was "unclean" and had to offer a sin offering and continue her "separation" for 33 days! I very well remember being taught back in my catholic grade school by a young nun who would pull out her little white "Mary" book and teach us catholic heresy in religion class. I remember all the "devotions" to Mary, the litany we would recite about her, the May processions, the grove behind our catholic school, etc. And yes, as a catholic little girl, I loved all that stuff. Nope, she is NOT the "queen of heaven." The only "queen of heaven" mentioned in the bible is pagan!! See Jeremiah 44:15-30 KJV. Hopefully, you do have a bible. Do you not realize that it wasn't until the early 1950s that the pope at that time declared his nonsense about Mary and that NOT every cardinal even agreed with him? What a mess.

Mediatrix is a title given to Mary, mother of Jesus in Christianity. It refers to the intercessory role of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a mediator in the salvific redemption by her son Jesus Christ and that he bestows graces through her. Mediatrix is an ancient title that has been used by many saints since at least the 5th century. Its use grew during the Middle Ages and reached its height in the writings of saints Louis de Montfort and Alphonsus Liguori in the 18th century.[1] A general role of intercession is attributed to Mary in Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Oriental Orthodoxy,[2] and the term "Mediatrix" was applied to her in the dogmatic constitution Lumen gentium of the Second Vatican Council. "This, however, is to be so understood that it neither takes away from nor adds anything to the dignity and efficaciousness of Christ the one Mediator."[3 Don’t know what Catholics you’re hanging out with..Google says it’s not Dogma?😊

I was raised a JW from 1969 to around early 2000s. I hated being one as a kid. I remember going door to door as a kid and sitting there listening to arguments about the Trinity with the JW i was with. I stopped going in the early 2000 because I didn’t want my kids being raised in that environment but still believed in the core teachings. Come 2020 i help my mom zoom in to a meeting and was like this whole thing is just wrong. I believe in God and the Bible and don’t think it’s an important thing if Jesus is the God of the Old Testament. If it was God would have made it as clear as other things in the Bible.

I’m no longer a JW after 30 plus years and was part of the Church of England when I was younger, I also looked into Catholicism, the Mormons and born again Christians. What I found with the non JWs was that they mostly believe in the trinity, immortal soul, hellfire and once saved always saved, what I realised on studying the Bible properly is that none of those things are not biblical. Equally since cov!d primarily, I realised that WT also have some things wrong, some of which are not biblical either, however, just because they disagreed with you regarding the trinity doesn’t mean they don’t understand it, let’s face it, even much of the clergy profess not to understand the “mystery” that is the triune god. It’s actually not about trying to understand it, when you know something is false, it’s false, end of story, if it’s not Bible based then it’s untrue and a thorough investigation of the subject (any subject) will show when something is false. At the end of the day NONE of us knows everything and as long as we continue to research scripture we will continue to grow in knowledge, once we stop looking especially if we think we have all of the answers, then we are definitely on the wrong road.

The JW's usually do have a 'pat' answer for everything -- they've actually put together a book for that purpose. "When the Christian says this, you say that.' But pat answers are usually one-inch deep. They don't have to be good answers; they just tell the JW that their church has heard the objection before, and they still think they're on solid ground over it. Two things are needed to go further. first: a generous attitude, where I think you did great; and second: follow-up questions, as you said. If you can get them past their pat answers, you may get them thinking.

JWs contradicted my Tanach written in Hebrew language. If you don't think they will be back at your door than you don't know JWs. The only way you get rid of JWs is when you agree to go to their meetings and submit yourself to the one true LIVING God. Without insulting their Organization soon you will find yourself in the position to CHOOSE between God and Organization because NO ONE can serve two masters. If Jesus is not JEHOVAH than we have the two masters situation again. You don't want to solve the problem for them, leave it to them to give you an answer. This way they will have to do their OWN investigation and solve their own HYPOCRISY. And one more point : In Hebrew language Jesus Christ (Yeshua Hamashiach) literally means THE ANOINTED SALVATION. Christ or Hamashiach means THE ANOINTED. Jesus or Yeshua means SALVATION. I hope you see it now: GOD is THE ANOINTED SALVATION Psalm 62:7 KJV - In God is my SALVATION and my GLORY: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Isaiah 12:2 KJV - Behold, God is my SALVATION; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my SALVATION. P.S: I would gladly attach the Hebrew text too here to the English scriptures but if I do this, you will NOT receive my message.
