Bill and Frank were in the game, but their story was sadder. This is more of a "happy ending" re-write for their story. In the game around this time you meet an angry and paranoid Bill who bickerers hilariously with Ellie. In the argument between Bill and Frank in the show (Which happens off screen in the game) about living life outside of surviving, Bill refuses to and Frank leaves. When Frank leaves he gets bit and he kills himself rather than become infected. Bill discovers his body and further cuts himself off emotionally, which serves to show Joel the path he is headed down if he doesn't allow himself to risk being hurt to form connections with others and try and live life rather than just survive. Obviously in the show, they went down a more positive path to show Joel that you CAN do more than survive and really enjoy life even in the apocalypse as long you allow yourself to love others.

In the game and show, Bill acts as a foil for Joel but for different reasons. In the show, Bill is someone who, like Joel, is a protector who found something worth protecting. However, while the apocalypse took everything from Joel, it gave Bill love and happiness. In the game, however, he was a recluse who drove away Frank from his loner streak, eventually culminating in Frank hanging himself due to several bites from infected on his legs. It showed what Joel could become.

For Ellie and the infected, I took it more as her being curious about what could have happened to her if she wasn't immune, knowing that that is somewhere inside her. There was probably a degree of anger about Tess and her own bite when she killed it, and determination to make her self kill it (going off her question to Joel in the previous episode about if he finds it hard to kill them knowing they were people). For what this episode did, while it didn't further the external plot of Joel and Ellie's journey, it does forward their internal plot. At the start, Bill was closed off emotionally just like Joel is, and he allowed himself to open up. We got to see the internal transformation he went through as an example for how Joel may transform if he allowed himself to open up instead of being closed off. It's essentially preparing us for his internal journey for the rest of the season as his primary conflict for the story is internal. As far as Bill in the game, he acts as an example of Joel's possible path, just in the opposite way, as what he could become if he keeps himself closed off.

It's "The Last of Us" not "The Last of Joel and Ellie". The game is actually filled with notes, often chains of them detailing moments in someone's life, their struggles, the hopes and dreams, etc. This episode felt exactly like that, glimpses into two other people's lives and I'm so glad it was done this well.

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living. Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.s That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all. In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life. In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up. Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch. Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending. ---------- Bill, in his paranoid ways, would never sleep with a window open before. That moment he left the window open would've been his final acceptance. For the first time in a long time all his fears, worries. All lifted off. He no longer had anything to be afraid of anymore. Those final steps, from the window, to the bed where Frank was waiting for him, must've been the lightest steps Bill ever took his whole life. And that moment his eyes closed for the last time, knowing his love was in his arms, and that nothing could ever hurt either of them again. It must've been the most peaceful rest he ever fell into.

As others have said, Bill and Frank both make an appearance in the game, though Frank is already deceased when you come across his body. There are a lot of great secondary characters in the game, but Bill was a big fan favorite back when it first came out, so I suppose Druckmann wanted to expand on and change his story a bit this time around. While it's true that narratively speaking the only thing furthering the main plot was Joel getting a truck, food, supplies and weapons, that's pretty much how it plays out in the game as well. It just took a different route in getting there. In the game you make your way around the town alongside Bill, fighting infected and scavenging for parts to fix up a car, all while discovering various notes left behind by Frank detailing his and Bill's relationship and how it soured over time before finally coming across Frank's corpse. I can understand people having problems with this episode and how it shifts focus away from the main narrative of Joel and Ellie's journey, but I think it's still important for world-building purposes, and to set up the reason why Joel would consider Bill and Frank's house being a safe place to take Ellie to and to stock up on supplies. Because of this episode we were shown what kind of people Bill and Frank were and why Tess and Joel would trust them.

Simple explanation, this episode helped Joel understand purpose. Bill was a loaner who "hated everyone" and yet he found a purpose in the worst of situations. I think it's pretty clear how this motivated Joel to help Ellie. The entire episode comes down to the letter and Joel's reaction to it. Also, your question about them getting married: First, it's on screen to make us cry. 🙂 Second, remember that gay marriage wasn't legalized till AFTER the events of the global outbreak in this show, it would have never happened in this world so for them, it's a radical idea.

I think this episode is pivotal to the story for two reasons: - Firstly, Bill's letter makes Joel understand that he needs to protect Ellie. He just lost Tess and he is blaming Ellie for it. Bill's words give Joel a newfound determination that completely changes the way he'll handle the situation with Ellie in the upcoming episodes - It creates worldbuilding by showing us about how the government killed people who couldn't fit into the QZ's so that, in turn, there would be less infected running around. As well as that, we get to see a different community that isn't FEDRA or the fireflies and how Joel traded with them. Apart from all that, this was a great way to fix the issue they had in the game with this relationship. The way they wrote Bill and Frank in the game was absolutely disgraceful and disappointing. This story is about two queer characters falling in love and living a long, fulfilling life. That is rare to see in TV and I genuinely think this is one of the most important pieces of queer cinema we have ever had to date.

When I saw the first episode was set in 2003 jumping to 2023, I wondered why they changed it, because in the game it's 2013-2033. I'm convinced this episode was why. Gay marriage was legalized in America in 2004, so if the world ended in 2003, Bill and Frank never got to live in a world where they could legally marry. Which is why I think they waited until Frank's last day. Now or never.

Bill and Frank were in the game. In that version Bill is used as a warning for what Joel could become if he leans too far into apathy and survival. GAMES SPOILERS: Frank hangs himself after getting infected trying to steal Bill's car and run away. He blames Bill in his suicide note. Its a really dark alternative that's more a warning to Joel to not get totally closed off like Bill. That said, I personally like the show's changes more. If Bill's function is to send a message to Joel and trigger his emotional investment in Ellie's safety, the "three rules" scene is SO much more impactful post Bill's letter as opposed to directly after Tess' death where it happens in the game. Knowing Bill and Frank took care of each other adds so much more weigh to Tess' sacrifice and triggers a really character driven decision to care for Ellie's safety in Joel. It speaks to what I'm enjoying most between the difference in game and show, the show is the game just heavier. Heavy doesn't mean dark, taking love seriously is heavier and I'm here for it.

About your first point about people not being able to be happy: I am sure you are very aware of it, but I think it is worth mentioning, that it is not that people can't be happy, but that different people want different things. As a creator it is just a matter of determining which audience set you want to target, and be consistent in which set you aim your work towards. Better to do this than to waver back and forth and try to make everyone happy, because that will not work. Ever. :)

While Joel and Ellie are the protagonists, they are not the main focus of the game/show. It's called The Last of Us because it provides many different views of how people react, survive, and even thrive in the remains of the world. Joel and Ellie are a vehicle through which the world, and the people in it, are explored. FEDRA, Fireflies, Tess, Bill, Frank and characters yet to come are the greater story within a standard zombie apocalypse plot. This episode could have just been a letter hinting at a backstory (like much of the game). However, the letter's purpose of giving Joel the emotional motivation to care for Ellie would not have the same weight without the unlikely love story of Bill and Frank behind it. In the game Bill serves as a warning and future option to Joel; a bitter and closed off old man he could become if he didn't allow himself to love again. Bill in the show serves the same role, only opposite; a possible option he can become if he does keep hope and love alive while protecting the ones he cares about. The game is FULL of side characters, and stories (some just in notes) that I sincerely hope are expanded upon just like this. I care about the Joel and Ellie story, but I care equally about all the other ways people dealt with surviving. I want to see how and why people either lost their humanity or found ways to keep it intact.

Here's something to make it all worse, especially the scene were Ellie examines the trapped fun-guy in the basement. Scientists studying the cordyceps fungus in ants have figured out that the stuff doesn't actually touch the brain.. like, at all. Instead, it goes through the muscles with long micro-tubular type growths that can both secrete chemicals and/or act like a hydraulic hose type controlling system. Or in other words, at least in ants.. the brain's just fine and normal.. the fungus just takes over the muscles in the body, somehow overriding the brain's commands, but it can still think (at least as an ant) just as well as it could before. Now apply that to the 'people' we're seeing....

For your question, yes they were in the game but this is not how it played out. Joel gets snagged upside down in one of Bill's traps and then Bill shows up. Bill helps joel and Ellie find a truck and a working battery until they found Frank's body (he unalive himself via sleeping noose) Turns out Frank left because he was tired of Bill's way of things and calls him a coward. The see a bite mark in Frank's leg so he did not want to turn. We found out after getting Bill's truck that he was Gay and when he said Frank was his Partner he meant in a romantic way because Ellie found a Gay magazine and trolled Joel about it.

I get that for some the episode may not advance the overarching plot of the story except for Joel and Ellie getting the truck. But I feel that the show took an opportunity to become more than what the game had to offer in the narrative. This episode felt more and can be treated as an anthology episode. It's showing how in a world gone insane and is all about survival. Two people were lucky enough to find happiness and live a life that many in that world would be envious to have.

@swhaw
Жыл бұрын
I have seen people say this episode didn't advance the plot at all. But, this episode has advanced Joel's plot, we were shown Bill and Frank's relationship as a way to hammer in the purpose that Joel now has after reading the letter. Basically he has been shut down this whole time, has his guard up for Ellie. This episode was a way to show that he needs to open up and let her in. Once he reads the letter he opens up a bit which is the first step to building his relationship with Ellie. The whole purpose of the episode was to show Joel that he needs to open up and let her in because he has a purpose in protecting Ellie now and can't remain closed. I don't wanna be a dick but everyone who has seen this episode completely glances over the letter and how it affects Joel and actually moves his character arc forward. Now it isn't an incredible advancement but it is way better than the couple cutscenes of Bill and Ellie and a glorified fetch quest for the battery until we find Frank's body.
@HSPaisley
Жыл бұрын
Joel doesn't need to see Frank and Bill's story to understand the letter. He lived it. He would have had the same emotional reaction to the letter whether or not we saw Bill and Frank story. So their stories world building, not plot. I'm not saying it's not important, but it did not advance the plot.
@swhaw
Жыл бұрын
@HS Paisley I'll give you that, we got the backstory as world building. Though id argue that people are too focused on whether or not this episode advanced the plot in a 9 episode show. Especially like I said this segment was like 3 short custcenes, some letters, and a glorified fetch quest. I've seen people make comparisons to season 3 and on of the walking dead when the comparison is always 3 times longer of a run time of this show and people say it worried them about the future of the show. Ignoring also that the story is not just about Joel and Ellie but the people they interact with along the way and their stories. And this was Frank's arc, his story, and how it affected Joel. Which yeah the only 'advancement' is the truck, if your talking pure advancement, but this show has always been about show don't tell, there is not a whole lot of exposition in this show, bar stuff about how the infection works so yeah while he lived it, we didn't so it is showing why the letter was so impactful to him. Because again we'd only be getting the truck from Bill. This was a much more human story of someone finding love and dying of basically old age, much better than another sad story where Bill and frank split up because of the argument in the mid episode like they did in the game leading to Frank being bitten. That is pretty much cliche to me. Now I'm not trying to argue or anything even if the paragraph says otherwise. But, I just dont think people give this episode enough credit as far as advancement goes and character advancement even if Joel has lived it. Even if Joel met Bill, or gotten the letter after he died like in this episode, it drives home Joel's need to make Ellie his purpose way harder than if Bill's story happened off screen as Bill was basically Joel. Bill was Joel's foil, and we needed to see his story and how he changed in contrast to where Joel is at now. I feel like im rambling since ive typed all this on mobile and have already typed a novel. But regardless you are entitled to your opinion, like I said I believe this ep deserves more credit for plot and character progression.

I've noticed people argue that this episode does nothing for the plot.. And it's a mix of yes and no.. The outcome is the same, Joel and Ellie get a truck.. But the series has no gameplay, so the only way to bond you to Ellie is to have Joel bond with Ellie.. And they don't like each other yet, at all.. So it looks like the options were another sneaky clicker episode with Bill, as Joel and Ellie get on each others nerves or we get a story about the core message of this season, which is "love".. And this is also the only happy story we'll be getting for a while.. So light was needed, and the only people to do this with at this point of the story is Bill and Frank.. Which were a couple in the games at some point in time. Plus there's a lot of characters we're yet to meet who I assume will get similar treatments of stories away from Ellie and Joel (Owen and Abby or Lev/Yarra ect for example)

I don't think it's unreasonable for fans of an existing story to be upset (within reason) if a new media adaptation deviates too much from the original. They showed up because they were promised one thing and then were given something else; it's a bait and switch. Obviously there is a bit more nuance to it, but I don't think the core logic changes. Think of the response if a new Wizard of Oz movie was remade and marketed on it being a "revival of a cinema classic" only to reveal itself as a Michael Bay movie once audiences had their asses in seats. Wizard of Oz fans would be upset and I think they would be well justified for myriad reasons.

"Why is Ellie going (into that basement) without telling Joel?" "Why is she a sociopath?" I don't know, but I'm certain the Ellie in the game wouldn't have done either of those things. The changes they've made to her character here are a little disconcerting tbh. I guess we'll have to see where it goes at the end.

@@HSPaisley I would argue that it is world building that expands on the overall themes of love and the importance of human connection, while also moving the plot forward a little. As a writer, I’m sure you understand that there is more to storytelling than just plot. The characters must have believable motivation behind their actions, or the plot is meaningless. Yes, there are other ways they could have given Joel this motivation, but I think this was a beautiful way to do it that is heavy on the show side of show vs tell. I love the thematic development as well.

On the contrary, this episode was crucial to the growth of Joel's character. We can see the change and the growth of Bill from a grumpy man who wants everybody dead to someone who cared and was afraid to lose the person he cared about. That letter he made to Joel may have hit the latter deep that after reading it we could see him slowly opening up to Ellie more in later episodes. This was a beautiful episode, and was necessary for us viewers to see how relationships fare in a post apocalyptic world. And do you really think Joel gets a vehicle to move them faster in their journey had Bill been alive? Only reason he gave it up was because he knew he was going to die along with Frank. Thumbs down for now, luv. Sorry. I'm pretty sure it'll be a thumbs up and possibly a sub in episode 4 or 5.

With the Witcher series the problem was it had almost nothing in common with the books not the game. It was necessary that it was to be different from the game due to the copyright. I should have strived to achieve similar vibe as the books and diverge from the original story when it is necessary due to difference between books and series as a medium (possibly also when creators of the series want to add their own original content). Writers of the Witcher series failed miserably by heavily changing the source story for no good reason. They could've created a half baked meh generic fantasy if they only dropped the Witcher title. Instead it's a failed Witcher series. The last of us series for now presents completely different approach to the source material. Parts that are changed or build upon, are changed for better.

I would disagree that the first season had nothing in common with the first book. I think there were a lot of similarities. Maybe the devices weren't used in the exact same way, but they were there.

@@HSPaisley there was a facade of similarity - places, characters, names etc. But the way those were used in story was different. For example Jaskier/Dandelion character in books is much more than comic relief. Many other things like Cirilla, Nilfgard, dryads of Brokilon, brotherhood of sorcerers etc are completely different. Also i still can't understand why they decided on the weird eel pool plot with the sorcerers? What was the point, that it was necessary to change the story to ad it? 😂 Anyway. I don't assume i can change your mind on the Witcher series. You have your opinion i have mine both are valid. Just like for me the Witcher books are amazing political and social story and my friend sees it as a story of a family. I am just still kinda sad that we got two the Witcher series (old Polish one and Netflix one), both were not good enough adaptation of the original story and i am pretty sure that we won't get third chance to see the Witcher done right. 😭

@@marcinsikocinski4661 I was actually thinking the way the stories were told was one of the things that mirrored the books. The separate timelines was done differently than in the books but it was in the books.

@@HSPaisley what i see is a distorting mirror. There are characters from the books in Netflix series. Names are correct, looks are there but what those characters represent, how they are used in the story is different. It's similar with the stories. Sometimes what should be a Song-of-Ice-and-Fireesque intrigue is crudely redone for no reason other time moral of the story is quite different from the source material.

The editing is incredible! Not so long it feels like a chore to watch and there’s still all the good bits! The episode was such a good deviation from the game p.s. keep in mind the universe is called The Last of Us. I see a lot of people questioning why bill and Frank’s story matters, but the way I see it, they could very well be the last people on the planet to experience what they did. ;(
