I don't buy the whole competency argument. Dramatically for the ending to work, the Fireflies had to be capable of a cure. That was obviously the intent of the developers who grounded it in character choices. IT's the way the movie of The Mist likewise depends on the soldiers coming at the end not being psychos who will mow down survivors. Joel's actions were absolutely selfish and self-centered.

Regarding the part where Ellie "heals" joel with the medicine. The medicine is stated to be antibiotics, specifically penycilin, which is used to fight infections. A decent amount of time had passed since Joel got the wound, so it was already healing, but it got infected, and that's why Ellie wanted medicine. Yeah, he shouldn't have been at full strenght, but it's way less unbelievable.

Yeah, I don’t get this interpretation of “he knew the fireflies were incompetent”. That sounds like an excuse. Joel’s an anti-hero, a hero with some un-heroic traits. He’s loving and protective of Ellie, but in a selfish way that leads to his ruthlessness in defending her. He wanted to save Ellie because he loves and cares about her and like you said, to save himself from that pain.

@@theashenstorm5509 Actually that’s the point why I felt horrible watching the last scene: Should I have played with that character who turned into the enemy of humanity because of selfishness? And Marlene was also right about Ellie’s motivation: she would have sacrificed her life for the cause as well. Joel robbed everybody (killed Marlene who cared for Ellie, lied to Ellie) becase he wanted to have a 2nd Sarah by all means. However as a father somehow I could see the justification behind that decision. So it’s very controversial and makes me think about it for a while. That were my feelings at the end. The point of watching a review, for me, is that the reviewer and I have similar sensibilities, thus allowing me to trust the reviewer's review and make a decision about whether or not I want to purchase something. edit: to be clear, he says this game in particular does a good job of fleshing out a homosexual character, and that he "doesn't mind" that there's such a character in the game. my beef comes with his (and others) dismay when a character's "only quality" is that they're queer. This never seems to be a problem if the character is straight. If the character just loves going to church and loves their wife, there's no outrage, even though all we know about that character is that they're religious and they love fucking women, because there's more to loving your wife than fucking, it's emotional and romantic. Instead, Luke reduces it to "preferring sausage over a ham sandwich," which is.....I don't know how to describe it, insulting? But i'm not insulted. I guess....disappointing. I feel like you made a lot of really unfair criticisms of this game. Like then you said that Ellie gave Joel some kind of magic drug. She states earlier that she needs antibiotics which to be fair are often injected directly into an open wound. Not to mention antibiotics are in fact quite the miracle drug. Look at the rates of death from infections caused by large open wounds before and after their discovery. It's very possible that the antibiotics were able to bring Joel to a state where he was conscious enough to remember what happened and realize that he's in a completely new location and Ellie is nowhere to be seen. Edit: Also you have to take into consideration that quite some time has passed between Joel being hurt and waking up. It entirely possible that the wound is mostly healed. And that's why Ellie is looking for antibiotics as opposed to something else. She's not worried about healing the wound, she's worried about fighting infection, Joel's number one problem faced from impalement other than blood loss, which we know is no longer the case. You have to think about the fact that this is pretty much his first time regaining consciousness since the injury and he woke up realizing the perhaps the only person in the world that he cares about more than himself is in danger. I'm willing to bet that he could pull together some hustle.
@AOZMONSTER
4 жыл бұрын
Great point. Maybe Luke needs to spend a few days shadowing an ER nurse. Joel does sort of stumble a few times as he sets out and I agree, in that situation you just get it together. But I would like to add to this. The criticism of the shootout at the camp while in pursuit of Ellie was just ignorant. Ellie was distressed and in flight mode. She would not have had the sense to avoid bandit camps and furthermore she would have been moving so quick that she very likely made it through so fast that the bandits would not have had sufficient time to react. Now, you could stealth this section, but the way it is set up makes it very difficult. I wholeheartedly believe that this particular fight was not meant to be belabored over. You are in rushed pursuit of someone you are growing to care for. You are meant to blast through this fight in excess. Ellie has just stirred up this nest and you are meant to rush through it. You still don't know if she is alive or even still fleeing and you don't have time to delay! It is also very likely that some of the bandits split off in chase of Ellie and made a wrong turn. This would explain the later party that attacks the farm house. Since they were not already dwelling in the farm it may be that they were not initially aware of it and upon returning to a dead camp, they would have known that more had come through behind them. Either way, after a dozen play-throughs I never found it unnecessary at all. It always made sense. They probably made quite the ruckus racing through like that. And it was very likely the base camp for the earlier attack on the damn. The attack on the damn: I do remember there being some miscommunication regarding security check ins which is why they had to head up to the generator to begin with. I could be wrong so I don't have a very good response for this one. But they must have had a reason for being so vigilant at the front gate when they first arrived. I would only guess that they are dealing with regular assaults from bandits from time to time. And lastly, the quick-time-events in this game are some of the best placed ones I've ever experienced. They are consistent enough that the button use isn't a complete ambiguous mystery and not so frequent that they become a chore. And Joel's fall over the rail is supposed to feel like a failed event - BECAUSE IT IS!!! Joel nearly dying is not a win. He becomes mostly incapacitated and as he bleeds out his body is resisting hypovolemia. His body is likely shunting off his extremities in order to keep the blood in his core and he would be struggling with walking and staying focused. The pain and realization of near-death would also be tremendously overwhelming. It is very common for victims to faint from the fear alone in this sort of trauma. I found the sloppy and non-responsive controls only adding to my frantic mood and drawing me in more to the moment. I found myself holding my breath while lining up shots. It was genius. Even on following play-throughs I realized that the timing was designed so meticulously that it was not possible to ruin the events with preemptive aiming. It was a trick pulled off very well! And shooting zombies while hanging upside down... Who bitches about that???? What other game has ever pulled that off as well as naughty dog did? Have some fucking perspective! Otherwise, great review ;)

It annoys me so much when Joel first wakes up in the firefly base and Marlene says “It’s lucky we turned up when we did.” As if they were the ones that saved Ellie. Even though they were the ones who knocked out the man who spent a year travelling with the girl and was already performing CPR. Yes it’s made clear they weren’t aware it was Joel and Ellie in Marlene’s diary but c’mon. I get they might believe it’s a trap but standing back would have been safe. Not once do the fireflies thank Joel. They just steal his sh*t and then send him on his way. Without his gear and weapons. IN A ‘ZOMBIE’ OUTBREAK.
@GoblinKing-im2uz
4 жыл бұрын
Not to be that guy but on the topic of the CPR: Ellie had drowned and her heart had stopped, if she was actually alive she would have coughed up the rest of the water as Joel forced it from her lungs when compressing them. CPR is used to forcefully pump blood around the body whilst putting fresh air into the lungs through mouth to mouth. CPR doesn’t restart a heart, you have to wait for someone to use a defibrillator. That’s why you can’t stop once you start because their heart will just go back to not working. So for Ellie to survive the fireflies must have restarted her heart and so Joel was indeed lucky that they show up in time as Joel would not have been able to bring her back without a defibrillator. But I do completely agree that the self righteousness of the fireflies was infuriating and kind of unfounded as they they are completely irresponsible. I also have to say that being apart of a community that still regularly experiences abuse, assault, harassment, murder, rape, and less rights to no rights compared to other people just because I exist I appreciate having representation in things I can have fun playing and watching just as I assume you appreciate seeing yourself being represented over and over again in these same things as well.

There's a lot that goes into the ending, I definitely think a big part of it is the competence of the Fireflies; but one thing I don't hear people talk about enough is the sentiment of *sacrificing the few to save the many*, which is how Joel lost is daughter in the first place. It's something that Joel and Ellie agreed was a shitty thing back in Pittsburgh (right before entering the quarantine zone). Joel would've had to essentially lose his daughter again for the same damn reason, both times with no clear evidence that it actually would've done any good. Think what you will about the sentiment itself, but it's set up from the beginning to be something that has only provably done Joel harm.

I don't understand the commentary near the beginning about Robert being in "debt" and that not making sense because he "has a lot of men." He's not in debt to them, Tess literally says she got jumped by his men and they stole Tess & Joel's gun shipment, so they go to get it back. Robert having a lot of men explains why they were able to jump Tess & why they felt confident in doing so. Robert wasn't "in debt."
@shemothy
4 жыл бұрын
Invalidationcoded At the same time, Robert is someone they have associated with previously and seems to be pretty important in regards to society within the QZ, and in that respect it would be kind of crazy for the two of them to blast into his territory and kill him and a bunch of his men. It seems like the kind of thing that may have some sort of long term consequences unless Joel and Tess were already planning on abandoning Boston.

I noticed that too, like why doesn't Joel pick up the assault weapons the soldiers use just after Tess' departure? From a gameplay perspective, I think it's because Naughty Dog wants your ammo to be restricted for the sake of tension and creating a sense of "surviving" encounters, rather than a traditional kill-em-all action game. However, it does come at a cost to the sense of realism for those that notice it.

Or they could just get over themselves. You don’t see heterosexual people hanging them selves over a piece of media not having a straight couple in something about gays. So stop gaying up everything and ruining anything worthwhile for the sake of inclusivity. Like for the longest time bill wasn’t gay, nobody had ever made that conclusion for YEARS after the game came out. He’s always said partner like they work together and survive together. Bills allowed to care about a guy he’s clearly spent a great deal of time with without wanting his schlong. Not everything needs to be romantic, just like Joel and Tess. It’s hinted at once but never again cause it literally doesn’t matter

Great video!! But in regards to Robert's part in the beginning, in my opinion, besides teaching us how to "play the game" how the world is after 20 years, you also have to take in consideration that, without Robert, there is no Marlene, and without Marlene, there is no Ellie. They are after Robert because he sold their guns(Joel and Tess) to the Fireflies. So Marlene has no option since Joel and Tess killed Robert as to make a deal with them. So to me, it is all connected in a very thoughtful way. Even though Robert has all his mercenaries at his disposal, Tess and Joel are way more ruthless and skilled than any one of them, so I guess it makes sense that they are able to take them down. Otherwise, nothing more of the game would make sense, since Joel and Ellie are able to take down larger numbers of foes and infected during the game.

Maybe I'm the only one but I assumed that David was going to "have his way" with Ellie in the restaurant before she kills him and that was why she lost control in killing him and the scene afterwards with Joel was so emotional because like Joel says earlier they've already had a lot of close calls.

Definitely an attempted rape scene, especially because of the way she breaks down when she says “he tried to-“ and Joel immediately understands and that pushes him over the edge and he calls her babygirl for the first time, like he used to call his daughter. I think during the Winter section, they DO put an emphasis on Joel’s wound. Admitably less than they maybe should have, but they do. He wakes up and winces. He stumbles onto a counter once he exits the garage. He runs slower and holds his wound while he runs. During the torture cutscene, he is still holding his wound and limping as he moves about. Then, they do kinda let it go to be honest- but it’s not true that they completely let it go. Through my playthroughs, I’ve always noticed that they put an emphasis on that; at least at first. They definitely could have done more later on in the chapter, but I think it’s unfair to say that it’s a full disconnect from reality

Man, it's sad to go through a video that predates TLOU2 and hear all these ideas on how the Fireflies' capabilities were questionable, and how Ellie's infection might factor in to the sequel's plot. Only for TLOU2 to not just contradict what we see in TLOU by saying the Fireflies were perfectly capable, but that Abby's dad is somehow the only person on Earth who could develop a fungal vaccine, even though he's a surgeon and not a vaccine lab tech. It's like saying a professional race car driver is the only person on earth who can do helicopter maintenance. And for Ellie's immunity to have less of an impact on the story than Dina's pregnancy.

I feel like the bigger point around Tommy's change of attitude to take Ellie off of Joel's hands is because, when he sees them interact after the attack, he realises that his brother is perhaps getting too attached to this girl, and knows that she could be an emotional time bomb to him, given his past loss. Maybe the intention was that he even realises that the reason Joel is making the request isn't necessarily because "Tommy knows the area better" or whatever - it's that Joel is just trying to palm her off before anything happens to her under his care. In other words, Joel couldn't bear to lose what is *essentially* a second daughter (hence Joel's plea - "Tommy, I need this" - why else exactly would Joel *need* this? He never particularly seemed to care about a possible cure). And Tommy caves because he doesn't wanna put his brother through another potential loss - he barely bat an eye when Joel told him she was immune, and he initially refused Joel's request, so I'm not sure *he* had any faith in the cure idea either. I would say he agreed to protect Joel, ultimately. At least that's how I took it.
@RoaringTide
4 жыл бұрын
Also, just on the ending: as I don't think Joel ever really gave a damn about the cure, I think his decision came purely from his attachment to Ellie. By the end, she was his ray of hope in a bleak world. Not hope for mankind's recovery, but hope for himself. It's why he brushed his watch in the last scene as he says "You keep finding something to fight for." He fights for Ellie. It's certainly selfish in a way. But man, it's hard to judge - none of us have experienced an apocalyptic pandemic. We haven't quite experienced that depth of human desperation, and the need to cling to anything to keep you afloat. In fact, I would even say that, someone looking in from the outside and claiming that they or anyone else would - or should - kill Ellie to potentially produce a cure, is a questionable assertion given our inexperience and naivety with circumstances this dire. Joel made a selfish choice. But calling him EVIL? That's too cartoonish and dismissive for me.
@AcesMaven
4 жыл бұрын
@@RoaringTide Thank you. Maybe it is selfish to save someone because a possible cure could save the rest of the world, but at the expense of someone else's life? It's been a long time since I've played the game, but did Ellie know she would die? I believe there is a recording you can find that eludes they tried this on someone else who died. And those doctors must have known this would could kill Ellie. What happened to first do no harm?

So for joel and ellie he didnt care about the wepons or the firefiles after tess died. he even tried to have his brother take her because he knew if he did it he wouldn't be able to let go. There is even a paper in the firefly base that said ellie was not the first. Theree was another person they killed to make the cure. but they were not able to make a cure. When joel found out that ellie was not told that she would die for the cure and didn't have a chance to make that choic, joels fatherly family instincts kicked in. He couldn't let them kill ellie which as cold as he was he just couldn't let her go it was the only thing he had that he cared about and he would kill to protect her at that point he didn't care if there was a cure or not all he cared about was saving ellie so after he saves her he lies to her. But in actualit, he couldn't let her go he figured shecouldn make that decision after he die, but while he was alive he would take care of her like a father because even thou he would never say it he loved her like a daughter. That was the way i understood it. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I was not a fan of 2 and i Don't even know if i will play 3 when it comes out.

Great job, Ultimate commentary is the right title here :) 2:04:00 : I think Joel did it right by saving Ellie. The Fireflies would have been too incompetent to produce a cure for mankind, Ellie would have died for nothing. Later in the TLOU Part2 she screams that she was supposed to die in that hospital and her life would have fu**ing mattered if she did so. Again I think thats false, she would have died and the chances of a cure would have been very slim at best...

A few things really convinced me you don't know a whole lot about what you're talking about-- that you take it by eye and word of mouth, but not the context and scenario. Starting example being: "How can Robert be in debt, if Robert can clearly hire bodyguards?" Obviously ignorant of how debt works, and the possibility that the price for protection is worth MORE for far LESS because the debt is far superior to the costs for protection. You're clearly insinuating he also bought the weapons for his protection, too. Robert hired the men, the men owned the gear. To the last example: "Why didn't the fireflies fire at Joel until he dashed for the elevator?" very blind to any concepts whatsoever of logic. Unlike Serah, Ellie was not directly and openly within the sights of a gun, back turned towards the fire. If they DIDN'T fire, to incapacitate or hinder Joel's escape, she's lost anyway. If their objective is to retrieve the girl, it only makes sense to hold off until the last possible second, because it's better to get what they can-- only taking the RISK(Again, Joel is the bigger target, Joel is a human shield, keeping her protected, making Risk-Reward a secondary priority.) when their last opportunity to chance it was going away. A lot of other drivel that's honestly less critical and more biased. Otherwise, the 90% that was actually, contextually, logically, factually correct was good, but most of it took away from the lore. like, a lot. Grasping for solutions to problems with canonical solutions.

Look, in the end of the day, i believe this was the only route available for a story for the last of us, unless they were gonna copy the walking dead and havr their settlement invaded provoking a war. Again that plot device would have been so walking dead. So the only way to make a part 2 was finding a reason for Ellie to leave the safety of jackson. "But joel..." Joel was no longer a smuggler and had finally began to trust others. He had settled down. Both had, and if you play the game you will noticed why there was no longer a joel and ellie duo. So a game focused on both adventuring was not gonna be a thing. The other type of plot, was.. we she is inmune, but there way yo make the cure anymore. So thst plot device was destroyed at the end of part 1. Form the get go part 2 was already set in a world without future, where people are barely surviving, and different groups are killing each other. And in all of it was Joel, soften by the years in Jackson, who stopped being a cynic and weary of his soroundings in terms people. Not knowing his past was coming back for him. And the rest followed in a cycle of revenge with no happy ending. So if any of you though it joel was going to have a good ending and, im sorry but the Last of Us is a dark setting, when noting ever ends right. As much as people liked the ending in part one, that was not a positive ending , it was a dark and brutal one. Hell the fame it self was full of nothing but death. Hell in the very beginning fedra shooting all of those bystanding civilians. So i dont know what game you guys expected

Honestly I'm not even emotionally invested in this series, but after hours of looking at different opinions, I realised how childish the fans of the series are. Especially the haters. Part 2 is actually extremly thought-out and, while it has flaws in pacing and the way the story is being told, it's still an amazing game to experience (all the problems on the narrative side are balanced by the top-quality delivery in my subjective opinion but anyway, flaws remain flaws). People are upset at Joel's death, which is actually very natural and realistic. People want a meaningful death, his death is meaningful. People say he deserved a better death without thinking of the HUNDREDS of people Joel and you as a player kill! People that perhaps also deserved meaningful deaths. The thing is, there's no such kind of luxury in a world like that, and the way Joel's death is done, in my opinion, serves right to the world they are in. People say this is ''woke'' propaganda, but I failed to spot ANY instanced where things related to that are shoved down my throat. I simply don't see it. Ellie's sexuality has been addressed long before this game came out, Abbie isn't a trans, and buff women DO exist, especially when her physique is explained by her obsession with training, Lev is a transgender, yes, but that is far from his only character trait, which shows that he is actually a well thought-out character, not just a poor bland character put there just for representation of trans people. People are upset Abbie didn't get killed by Ellie in the end! WHERE is the logic in that? If Ellie actually killed Abbie, there would have been 0 character development. Ellie would have lost EVERYTHING (exactly the way she did) and everything would have been for nothing. Some properly said: "Ellie lost everything on this journey, but she regained her humanity." If she would have killed Abbie, she would have lost everything and get nothing in return. Yes Part 2 isn't a masterpiece( far from it), but it IS a good game. Especially when you're interested in a game that offers you nothing but depression. It's not a happy game, and it goes out of its way to show that. It's only darkness. And I find that a good thing. I totally understand people that don't want to play the game because ''it's too much'' for them, but saying it's a bad game because it doesn't sugarcoat the lives of people we care about? That's dumb. My guess? This game will be like wine. Gets better with time. Just like Metal Gear 2. Hated at first, beloved in time. Maybe the players will grow to see the MANY intricate meanings in this Part 2. Because there are many, but my comment is already an essay, so sorry for that XD my apologies

Man I expected Dina to die to be honest. But yeah Joel dying was probably the more logical course but I don’t like how it happened.

What was the firefly's plan again? To make a vaccine against the non-zombifying fungus? How would have removing Ellie's brain make a vaccine? If Ellie's fungus is the cowpox to fungal smallpox can't you just take some cerebrospinal fluid and use that?

CBI grows in the brain according to the artifcats you see in the game. It apparently mutated in her brain, and ig they were tryna reverse engineer it. I don't see it working, but even if it did - there's no guarantee of Fireflies a pro-democracy group co-ordinating w the Military, an authoritarian group to mass produce/distribute this. I think Joel knew that and didn't think it was worth her life.

Sam Barringer Even if he felt that it would work I don’t feel he would’ve let it happen. He lost Sarah and I’m sure he wouldn’t want to lose Ellie either.

Sam Barringer yes but you can just get some of the fungus without killing her, see any infected infecting another human. Unless the mutant fungus lost all ability to infect anyone ever?

grounded I would say is not the definitive way to play....its too unfair on the player. Survivior is the best way to play as the ammo and supplies scarcity is still extreme enough in that it fully immerses you into the world without being ridiculously cheap and infuriating like grounded
