The Göktürk Khaganate, founded in 551 CE, was built opon the so-called Asena legend. In it, a sole survivor of this family in form of a boy was saved by a she-wolf, who took care of and merged with him. Then, ten children were born, half-wolf and half-human, who later in adulthood left the cave area and took revenge upon their father's enemies. This legend or tale is essential for understanding Turkic history. But why? Why is the wolf a sacred animal for the Turks? What is up with the "Turkish wolf" hand gesture, and why is it being used in Turkey? And how is the legend of Asena perhaps related to other legends in Europe? It is time that we get to the bottom of these questions and find out.
