Toph did find enlightenment. It was her own kind of enlightenment. She is an Earthbender, and she found a way to use earthbending through the plants. She expanded her senses so much that she can reach out across the world to connect with her family. Spiritual connection seems strongest in air benders, and with Earth and Air being opposites it stands to reason that earthbenders would have a harder time of it. But Toph is, deeply, in touch with the spiritual energy of the swamp, and through it, the world. Toph is a fighter and her kind of enlightenment wouldn't be the peaceful meditation of an Air Nomad. It is blunt and straightforward. Just like her. God I love her character!

@@brianlaureusI miss how her empathy was so strong that she had an innate desire to be involved in social affairs that affected the justice and freedom of the people. I know they're meant to highlight the new cast, but she just feels like the least utilized of the surviving Gaang imo-- even Zuko, while he isn't abrasive anymore, didn't hesitate to get involved when Zaheer escaped and intended to continue the fight if he went after his daughter. Katara's children were in active danger (and located in the SWT, so it's not like she had to travel) and her home was in danger of a forced rule (which btw is a concern mentioned in the comics when she was a teen, so it would have been interesting to see that come to play) and we never at minimum got her voice on it. I can only assume she is no longer able to fight since she is only ever seen healing, but I miss her fiery spirit. It would have been cool to see her reconnect with her surviving friends, I think maybe she is lonely in her grief and needs support beyond the occasional family visit and alleviate the pressure off Kya.

Well, considering they only used the seismic sense on a basic level, it makes sense. Toph's capacity to master the art that she basically invented is the same with her earth bending. Her constant use of seismic sense to feel literally everything around her makes her superior in skill to anyone. Sue and Lin, by comparison, aren't maximizing their skills to their fullest since they don't practice seismic sense NEARLY as much.

Definitely not this show actively changes and contradicts plots and ideas that were core to avatar in the first place and try’s its very best to disassociate with the OG series the writes said as much themselves. This isn’t a good successor but as its own thing I do think it’s a okay show, but it’s still related to air bender so it’s not its own thing therefore I don’t have to compare it as such. It’s clearly worse in many aspects, but it does do a lot of things right as well mainly in book 3/4 the first two books are incredibly boring and forgettable in my opinion.

I think it has to do with shadow of season 2. It was a verry divisive season with more lows than highs. Season 3 really bought it back, but by season 4 i feel the damage had been done. Season 4 overall was good but it suffered due to the reduced budget brought about by Nic execs, had we got the Kuvria dedicated episode and not the clip show ep, it would have tied up very nicely. And lastly, as much as people try to deny it, whether they're aware or unaware of certain bias they have...Korra's personality in tandem with being a woman is certainly a factor, I won't say its thee factor or deciding, but let's not pretend here.

Kuvira isn't in it for power, evil, or even the bomb-throwing chaos of it all like Korra's other antagonists. She just wants peace and order, but her traumas run so deep she views anything as justified in pursuit of that security.

These last two seasons portray the leftist critique of anarchism in the short term. Before the dissolution of the state, power must first be situated equitably in the hands of all people, otherwise the people with the most power from both within and without that society (i.e Kuvira, and the council of world leaders which tasked her with stabilizing the earth kingdom) will simply walk in exert force and ultimately regress back to the conditions which brought revolution in the first place (or more often than not worse) And also, obviously this my own moral and political perspective but, fascism is pretty much never forgivable. So, my take on Toph's "nothing the Avatar does matters" lesson: If we imagine this entire show without Korra, basically we still end up right here. Let's say Korra isn't there to defend Republic City from Amon. Maybe she's still at the North Pole, like everyone wanted her to be. So Amon wins, for a time. Well, Unalaq still tries to weasel his way into Korra's life, she's still in a position that is easy to manipulate, and he has the time, as Amon would have taken longer to act if Korra hadn't shown up, he says so himself. So Unalaq in the end still releases Vatu, still becomes a Dark Avatar, and thus wipes the floor with Amon during Harmonic Convergence. Now, let's say Korra doesn't manage to stop Unalaq. Harmonic convergence still gives Zahir airbending, the Red Lotus still escapes, and with Unalaq's power reduced to that of a "normal" Avatar after Harmonic Convergence, the Red Lotus takes him out. Let's say Korra still isn't able to do anything here. The Red Lotus does not leave any stability behind, as we see in Ba Sing Se. Eventually, they will be defeated, even if it takes decades, and Kuvira, or someone like her, reestablishes order and may also become a tyrant in their own turn. So, in the end, we end up more or less exactly where we are now. The big difference is without Korra, this is so much more devastating to everyone else, especially the civilians. Korra thinks it's her job to ensure nothing bad ever happens, but Toph knows that's impossible. Bad things always happen. Korra's actual job is to take care of things every time they do happen, and, most importantly, be the protective barrier between the danger and the weak. Conflict, and that includes the needlessly extreme and violent kind, is part of human nature, nobody can change that. The only way to change it is with a force that makes Kuvira or even Ozai seem like a friendly benevolent philanthropist. So Korra is basically a safety net waiting for when people fall, not if. She want's to be more than that, she wants there to be no need for a safety net, and the thought is noble, but simply unrealistic. Also, I think even if it did work, if Korra did such a good job that nobody needed her anymore, since her entire sense of self comes from being the Avatar, from being that safety net, if she wasn't needed anymore, she'd be miserable in an instant. At least Season 1-3 Korra would be.

Toph, to me, poured at the mistakes he parents made with her, she committed to not making those mistakes. The problem, as so often happens with that kind of reactive parenting, is that she ended up nding the opposite mistakes. He parents gave her no freedom, and had no expectation of accomplishment for her, treating her like a porcelain doll even after being presented with impressive evidence of just how powerful and tough she is. Toph gave her children incredible freedom, as much room to make their own choices as possible, and she had high expectations for accomplishment. She expected nothing less than excellent from her daughters, and they meet that expectation, but when you expect excellence, it can be incredibly difficult to exceed that expectations, which is really what most people are looking for. Kuvira to me is a wonderful example of an antagonist who actually has the best of intentions, and isn’t necessarily evil, but performs evil acts because of those intentions. In a way, Zahir is too, but in his case he had abandoned his restraint and sense of right and wrong a long time ago.

I believe they had plans for Tophs character to actually be Azula in the swamp, but because her redemption arc got cut from there being no Season 4 of ATLA (due to a certain live action movie getting the Nickelodeon budget) it wouldn't have really made sense for her to be a good guy unless you read The Search comic book of ATLA

I mean, maybe? There’s so much dissent among the different creatives whether ATLA having a Book Four was ever *seriously* considered… wouldn’t surprise me if Nickelodeon had at least considered it, but then again they always were weird in their overall treatment of the show (splitting Book Three in half, letting other countries get the second half months ahead, and so on). I digress, however; even putting that aside, Toph makes far more sense from a holistic standpoint because her family has been prominent in especially the second half of TLOK. So while I’d like a clear answer pertaining to Azula eventually, I don’t know that she would organically have fit in the show structurally.

Book 3 is technically called Balance, but I think it should be called Trauma cause everyone is dealing with trauma this season.

In this episode you can really see that season 4 Korra lost muscle mass from season 1-3 Korra. Sad, but realistic for what she went through.

It was always my assumption that Toph isolated herself in the swamp as the new keeper and protector. She took over for the "pants are an illusion" guy. It's not explicitly explained, so this is speculative.

"They never picked up metalbending all that well..." Sounds a bit harsh, but she's got a point... very partially. While bending is mostlly mystical and tuned with the spiritual side of the world, some things like metal do pose a physical and very down to earth problem, specially liquid metals: concentration. In chemistry, any tool, or exam, dealing with concentrations of something needs to be calibrated to work and that can become a problem: if you use the wrong calibration for very small concentrations, the tool/exam will return a false negative reading, just because the concentration present is below it's tolerance. But that doesn't mean that little concetration doesn't represent a problem (with some mercury variants, very little concentrations can be fatal). Toph is presenting the issue a bit too coldly (well, because she is Toph), but yeah: if Lin or Suyin have never considered fine tuning their metalbending skills to very small quantites of metal, it's very likely they will never fell them, let alone bend them (that doesn't make them any less good bender... but Toph surely can focus his bending to very high precisions very little, or no, metal bender can). As far as we know, there is no test or exam to indicate just how fine tuned is the metalbending of one particular person; aside from some general public demonstrations or general test of materials, there has never been any need for that practice. Nice reaction and see you in the next one.

A lot of people don’t like what they did with Toph, but I disagree. I think her characterization was very interesting and made a lot of sense. She went to search for enlightenment because she became disillusioned with her life. She might not have shown it outwardly, but I think she did start to believe that everything she tried to accomplish as police chief was pointless because there was still so much crime, and she felt guilty for covering up Su’s crime and for her own shortcomings as a mother. She felt like the only way to improve was to leave that all behind. Finding enlightenment for her meant learning to see farther than she ever could before and watching over her family from a distance because she thought they were better off without her constant presence.
