The bass player you mention is none other than the great, and shamefully underrated, Graham Knight. My compliments on your excellent judgement and appreciation of his fine musicianship. Graham remained in The Marmalade until 2010, and was, by then, the very last original member of the band. In fact, Graham was also part of the PRE-history of The Marmalade, being the bass player with Dean Ford and The Gaylords from 1965,. The Gaylords evolved into The Marmalade in 1966 when the band relocated from Glasgow to London. I understand Graham now lives in beautiful sunny Dorset where I hope he continues to enjoy a well deserved retirement.

@@bredadalton3290 Sandy Newman is a great singer and actually sounds a lot like Dean Ford but I agree with you: Thomas McAleese(Dean Ford) was a superb front man and things were never the same in the Marmalade camp after he left but one has to give credit to the band for persevering and their 1977 album on Target was actually pretty good.

Indeed. RIP Dean (real name Thomas McAleese). A fine singer and an all-round decent guy who had an often difficult and challenging life in the years after he left The Marmalade but who worked hard and bravely to overcome his obstacles. The vocalist in this clip is not Dean who had left by this stage of the band's career. The singer here is Sandy Newman. By this time (1975) only Graham Knight and Alan Whitehead of the original - and best - Marmalade line-up remained. Dean, Pat Fairley and Junior Campbell had all departed. Sadly Pat and Dean have now died. Dean in 2018 (Los Angeles) and Pat in 2020 (also in Los Angeles). Incidentally, Sandy Newman has now been in The Marmalade continuously for longer than anyone (1975 - 2024). Almost fifty years. Back to Dean. He has the distinction of co-writing (with Junior Campbell) four of the original Marmalade's very best songs as follows: I See The Rain (No.23 in The Netherlands. Did not chart in UK, but should have. ) Reflections Of My Life (No 3 UK, No 10 US) Rainbow (No.3 UK, No 51 US) My Little One (No. 15 UK) A very proud record indeed as a co-songwriter.

@@CrankCase08 Not Quite. Drummer Alan Whitehead was also an original Marmalade member albeit joining the band in 1966. They traded as Dean Ford and The Gaylords between 1964 and 1965, went to England in 1966 and changed their name to The Marmalade by the time their first CBS single Its All Leading Up To A Saturday Night in mid 1966. Alan Whitehead was the only English man in the band. The other four were Scottish. In this clip you'll see both bass player Graham Knight and drummer Alan Whitehead and they both played on the 1977 album The Only Light On My Horizon Now. I like that particular album and new lead singer sounded very much like Dean Ford.

The original band toured the dance halls of Scotland(& the rest of the country) in the 60s along with Love Affair, Amen Corner, Desmond Decker, Geno Washington plus many more, playing to crowds of only three to four hundred youngsters. Happy memories of the Cragburn dance hall in Gourock Scotland.
