it’s just horrible that james charles was able to, time after time, “erase” the things he had done without any repercussions. he’s somehow a very rare case, doing almost everything bad that an influencer can and had possibly done, while still maintaining such a large platform. another example of this can be seen in shane dawson. it’s kind of good now that most people, besides their devoted audiences, are able to recognize this bad behavior and disassociate from the creators

I loved this Podcast. I’m a freelance writer and worked as a reporter for a few years. I’ve definitely seen both sides of how these stories are created. So I appreciate the benefit of the doubt. (Not that I have an opinion on those types of sites… lol)

Nothing but respect for real journalism, I think we can agree that gossip rags ain't it. I remember when I was young, I was shopping with my sister and she bought one of those tabloids and the front page article was "Britney Shears" from the Daily News. Even though I was a teen, even I could see how it was utterly vile. Me and other people (not my sister) too got sick of celebrity coverage, so the lot of us barely touched newspapers until much later. Honestly, those kinds of things discredit your entire profession.

To the point they’re making about “they’re young and they don’t know how to manage people” that’s the kind of thing I wished I’d learned in High School (along with taxes and how to buy a house/ car and stuff like that). Also overworking and underpaying was something I experienced a lot when I worked for a symphony presenter organization. I was making $15/hour with a bachelors degree, doing all the marketing, all the box office, all the reception and office management. I worked 50-60 hours a week and my director wouldn’t let me use PTO almost ever. I went in sick to that job more times than I care to admit. Any time an employer can prey on employees passion for a subject, in my experience they will. IMO, that’s more of a symptom of American capitalism than age or inexperience. In every job I’ve had there has been a feeling of disregard for employee well-being.

@@Stettafire yeah like I get trying to defend what and who you love but people take it too far. Obviously I see a lot of hate thrown at Taylor on twitter all the time but acting on it and starting useless fights is such a waste of time and really just paints a bad picture of the fanbase as well. Like the Swiftie fanbase is known for being very toxic and over all mean which is insane when you think about the person people swear to love. It's Taylor Swift, the last thing she wants is for people to get hurt and for her fanbase to attack people. And people seem to think that she can't make mistakes and that she is perfect. With that being said I personally believe that even though it isn't her responsibility nor her fault that the fans are acting this way she could say something about it. Just wanted to comment on what Cristine said at 17:40 about just having a high school job not equating to a job with a supervisor. I worked retail since i was 15 and knew early on i wanted to take on a leadership role and worked up to be a supervisor at a pretty young age. What i think Cristine really meant was that there is a difference between a job held simply because it brought in money against a job you then wanted to make a career out of. I just dont want her to be taken out of context to mean that she doesn’t view retail as a career option, but the general understanding that retail isn’t the traditional pick for what is considered a career option. I have seen a lot of different people in and out of a single location in my 7 years of managerial experience. There are those that come in from an early age that want the extra money and nothing else, no plans for the future with the company, there is no second thought to putting in there two weeks after they’re done with high school to move on to something else. Then on the other side you do have people like me that stayed, that saw the value in the work and genuine did want a career, worked with supervisors, had that responsibility and learned to lead, etc. But the truth is that really uncommon, and more often than not, yes retail (im including food retail here too, different work field yes but with the conversations I’ve had with other managers the employee pool tends to be the same) is a very much a place where you find a lot of younger people with a company life of 1-3 years and they dont do much other than grunt work / general labor. TL;DR: You can learn responsibility and leadership from those “high school” jobs, but 9/10 you’re right, you probably wont.

I have to write this down. I love SimplyPodLogical because it is very mature, entertaining and, especially with this episode, I agree with Cristine so much (esp. The james charles topic). I love their opinions and I might not agree with everything but it is presented with a thought and maturity that I really admire. In my opinion, Simply is one of the best channels that I love watching and love to support. Please, keep up the good work and the passion you put into it. I will hope and dream that one day, I will be able to talk to both of you (when I decide to join yt one day).

As a former journalism student, I really appreciate this defense of primary journalism. In my first journalism class ever, I was required to interview a cop and politician. It is a TON of work to make cold calls, try to get contacts, record, conduct interviews, & pull out relevant information from on-the-ground work. And now, you're also encouraged to have a social media presence. People often act as if the 'pursuit of the truth' should be enough, but you can't do endless hours of research on an empty stomach. It takes so much time, patience, & persistence that is often overshadowed in this quick, social media world. And as an intern for a now-defunct print magazine, the publication did have to pepper in more marketing/advertising pieces (rolled out weekly), to support their deeper investigative work (months long process).

Regarding your comment about lawyers being unprofessional in the workplace, my mom is a lawyer and she was fired when she got pregnant with my brother. Everyone knew that it’s illegal to fire someone for being pregnant but they also knew that she would never be able to work in the city again if she sued her former employers so she just had to deal with it

as a 20 year old listener and one who has never had a job, the thought of suddenly being a boss of either my family/friends, or a group of people, I would be terrified and so confused. I would most definitely make mistakes and probably end up hurting someone feelings or make them feel unappreciated by decisions I took. Doesn’t mean I did it on purpose or I didn’t take cautions to avoid that, but because i am simply not experienced in that type of position, so definitely I’m not surprised if mr.beast did the same

One of the best "good" ones on KZitem is clearly Justine Ezarik. She's done KZitem basically for longer than KZitem exist and has no drama. She just is a Woman in Tech and real rolemodel for Woman. Sure, 10 Years Ago, she did some weird Videos but so did our Queen Miss Marbles. I think Ijustine is just very smart and a good example for what is right to do.

I don’t feel like you can judge a KZitemr, especially the bigger, less personal KZitemrs on their fans. When you have tens of millions of people watching you, even if you explicitly say don’t do XYZ, there will be a percent that won’t listen. 1% of a million is 10,000 people which is definitely enough to cause problems in any community.
@una_panthera9820
3 жыл бұрын
I definitely feel that large KZitemrs will have that awareness though. If they don’t want their fans to harrass someone, rather than just saying ‘don’t do xyz’, they shouldn’t post the content that would cause that reaction in the first place. As it is it just seems like they’re covering their backs with a disclaimer, fully aware that some fans won’t listen, and posting it anyway in order to profit. Fans jumping on people who criticise their fave youtubers is a different situation though, as that’s not in reaction to something the youtuber has said/done and therefore not something they can control.

I really agree with the thing about not holding creators responsible for their fans. A lot of people try to paint one side as the bad side in an internet controversy by saying “well they got death threats.” Unfortunately I’ve heard of death threats from every single internet controversy in the last 10 years, big or small. It’s not something a creator can control. All they can do is send a tweet telling their fans not to harass people and even that is more about PR than anything else.

I really agree with your point about young youtubers starting businesses with friends and family, with no managerial experience. Not excusing any behaviors but just point out that not everyone can be a good manager/enjoys being a manager and sometimes with experience comes talent in that role. Throw in the youtube fame aspect and you can see how sometimes they get it wrong in terms of business / employee management.
