That was nice, but what about the funny part? You know, as this happened virtually every episode. Herc walks along, it seems to me always from left to right on the screen by himself, but maybe either direction. Everything seems sweet and normal. Suddenly. from BEHIND Herc, completely offscreen, Newton cries out "Lookout Herc!!!!" Herc then turns behind to look at Newton, and some object is hurled towards Herc from the direction he was facing before Newton cried out. Resulting, of course, each and every time, in Herc getting hit, whereas if Herc ignored Newton, he probably would had seen it coming. It's bad enough if they did it once, but Herc was so stupid he kept falling for it over many episodes.

I remember watching it on Channel 9 CKLW Windsor in Canada (which pursued American viewers across the border back in those times). It aired on the Popeye Show (back during the transition when the Fleisher brothers and Famous studio product was replaced with King's Feature Syndicate's own made-for-TV Popeye cartoons--dating myself a bit here), together with other shows like the Supermarionation Supercar and reruns of TV shows like William Tell and Long John Silver (the latter a followup to the famous Disney Treasure Island movie). Besides Mighty Hercules, Trans-Lux also brought shows to American audiences like Felix the Cat and Speed Racer. (Channel 9 aired a lot of their product like Gigantor and Marine Boy.)

"With the strength of ten ordinary men" Does that mean that eleven normal guys could beat the crap out of The Mighty Hercules?
@roberthaworth8991
4 жыл бұрын
A common misconception. Eleven men would never be able to coordinate an attack on Hercules (or on any one person) so as to bring to bear all their strengths at once -- that is, to combine their strengths. There is simply not enough fighting room immediately adjacent to a single man. Therefore, Hercules should be able to throw off or punch out any 3, 4, or 5 of them at once, at strength odds of at least 2:1 (probably 3:1) in his favor, then turn on the remaining men, group-by-group, at the same odds. Not to mention what would happen to the morale of his 11 assailants were almost half of their number to be taken out in the first few seconds of the encounter -- realistically, the rest would shrink back or flee. Were Hercules to be attacked by a weapon WIELDED by 11 men at once -- say, a battering-ram, to which all their strengths COULD contribute -- things might be different, but he would have to first be immobilized or (unlikely) ambushed for such an attack to succeed. Herc is too smart, agile, swift of foot, and experienced in combat for such a clumsy attack to work. Add in the flying horse he can summon, his bumbling-but-dedicated sidekick Newton, and the couple of magic items he keeps close to him, and it's all over for his opponents. It is not all just a trial of strength-vs-strength; he has other advantages as well, which serve as multipliers to his nominal strength.

To be fair, Hera was jealous that another woman got Zeus attention. Since Hercules was the one given the most Zeus like power, of all his children She inflicted Hercules with a madness(Drugged) in the Brain. After the Madness had cleared . Not coincidental. When the current Warners Brothers Animation looked at the Fleischer Brothers 1940s toons (which followed Seigel's and Shuster's original conception of Superman as a smaller more balletic figure), they considered it unsuitable for their modern conception of the Man of Steel. So they turned to Mighty Hercules as their template for a larger and more rugged version of Supes for the Superman cartoons they've done in recent decades.

+Rockin Ed Yep...the gayest cartoon theme song ever. I mean, a vocal ringer for Johnny Mathis singing "Softness in his eyes, power in his thighs"?

I agree with you this vocalist sounds exactly like Johnny Mathis...

Rockin Ed We sang it this way Hercules, he's a big fat phoney Hercules made of cheese and baloney fighting for his life, with a rubber knife withe the strength of ten plastic army men!

It was sung by a guy that had a couple of pop hits in the sixties.

lauchlin yurchuk That still gives him a lifting strength of 1000-1500 lbs. (And, of course, the cartoon wasn't very consistent, so he could usually lift even more)

I learned a lot about Greek mythology from this show and it came in handy when we began to study it in school!

I remember getting the Hercules ring in a box of cereal when I was a kid. I walked around in the woods knocking over dead trees and pulling them out of the ground. It didn't get any better than being Hercules in the early 60's.

Thanks for these postings. Last night was trying to explain this to a friend who watched just about every superhero type cartoon but hadn't seen this. I sang the theme song for him but then wanted a link online, and here it is!

I remember this with wonderful memories. Some younger people might be critical, but you should look at it from the lens of its time period: All broadcast tv. Only 4 channels, including PBS. Most homes had one television. Animated shows like Hercules, sparked imagination and entertained, too. For me, it was awesome Sunday morning viewing. (Throw in Davey and Goliath/Gumby and Pokey, too!). Warm memories. 😺

This was my favorite cartoon as a little girl. I remember the theme lyrics! Thank you so much for this, xBeatrushx.

By the way, on vocals is the legendary JOHNNY NASH (who first covered 'Stir It Up' before anyone over here even knew who Bob Marley was), singer / writer of 'I Can See Clearly now'.

This brings back memories... seeing this on TV in New Orleans(WGNO-26), and then after moving here to Western NY, via the Global Network from Canada.
