As an avatar creator mirrors are an absolute blessing, and as an FBT user I can say the same, its complicated to calibrate without a mirror lol
@IAmPhysics1
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely. That "upgrade" they made to fbt calibrating is complete garbage. Who thought it was a good idea to have your complete avatar follow your head? That just obscures the legs and makes them harder to align. If they ever get rid of the --legacy-fbt-calibrate switch, I'm going to be pissed.

I think mirror is an unconscious manner to see what your doing since fov is not as big as your own eyes. For me i cant really just lay down its a waste of time, but as a fbt enthousiast I like to calibrate with the mirror cause im picky about it!

This 100%. The limited FOV & voice volume distance ratio being the way it is makes simulating irl "talking circles" being really small. At mirrors, people can "stack by height" with small avis at the front, keeping within close voice range while also being able to see each other's expressions.

I was one of the mirror dwellers in the tavern clips with music and I can say the main reason we decide to look in the mirrors for so long is because it makes it easier for us to use the right facial expressions and make sure our full body isn’t going all over the place. Of course I do enjoy playing games with friends but being a dancer, the mirror makes it easier to practice moves :) 💖

We also mostly did it at the beginning and it's not only what we do.

The mirror is the equivalent of grabbing drinks at a bar. If you've got nothing to do, and you just want a reliable place to chill, where you're likely to meet new people, the place for that in vrchat is the mirror. I assume it's no different from people who used to gather around at the campfire, especially when you consider the music, dancing, and general socializing. Also not that different from people who like to sit on their porch and watch the sun set over drinks with friends. Or sitting on the couch watching tv. All of those experiences have their own form of entertainment or things to pay attention to while literally just sitting around together. But generally they're just places to chill with others. And the mirrors in vrchat, along with being a place to chill, end up being a place where you can make sure you're expressing yourself the way you intend to. While also being a large screen tv to watch all the vr shenanigans happening around you. A lot of people pass judgement on it, but it's harmless, and it's an interesting phenomenon to witness. The realist acknowledges life for what it is, and finds their own fun. The idealist criticizes others for acting in ways they don't approve of. And criticizing others is a very easy way to make a person feel better than others. It feels good to feel better than other people, right? Let's all go after the people who are literally just hanging out with friends

I would only spend time sitting infront of a mirror if there was a lot of conversation going on around me and if the people I was talking to went to the mirror first. Otherwise it's not really for me. Although whenever I see a mass amount of people who are silent staring into a mirror and it's not like a sleep room or something and it doesn't really make too much sense to me, I don't understand why some people have such an attitude towards or about it because imo people can do whatever they want and if you are someone who likes to just sit infront of a mirror there's no reason to be rude to everyone else in the lobby. This may not be true for everyone else but I customized my avatar myself, the model was made by someone else but I added accessories, did the textures, did the shaders and bones, I spent hours working on this thing and a custom fallback which is just a low res version of it so that even if people can't / don't load my normal they can 'see' me still just looking a little doodoo-ish. That said... I looked at my avatar enough and have very little desire to sit in front of a camera or mirror and stare at myself... I know what my avi looks like.

Mirrors are more complicated than you think. First is what you briefly spoke about the fascination with the avatars you wear, some people that fascination never goes away and to them they are happy to sit there and look at themselves in a mirror because unlike other video games where you can play a character in VR you can become that character. The other reasons people use mirrors are politeness and technical capability which is an odd mix. When you speak to someone you look them in the eyes, if someone is talking to you and wont look at your eyes while they are talking it feels impolite rude and feels like they are hiding something, there are times this is different such as if one or both of you are working on something but if your not doing anything you look someone you talk to in there eyes. If you in a group you also do this, you turn your head and look at the person your speaking to. The human eyes have a field of view of 200-220 degrees yet the average vr set only has a fov of 110 degrees, if your in a group in VR its very hard to look at everyone when talking to them. The solution to this? Mirrors. When you sit in a group in VR and all of you look at the same mirror you can look each person in there eyes while talking to them it increases your fov. Its very comfortable to chat with a group in front of a mirror as you feel you can look everyone in the eyes while doing so. Last reason is for streamers. Before the current camera system was in place the only way to look at your chat as if your are looking at there eyes is by using a mirror. There used to be a term called a mirror streamer where the streamer would stand in front of a mirror and talk with there chat but everyone who criticized them did not understand that those streamers where been polite to there chat. Your chat sees through your eyes but if you want to talk face to face with your chat the best way is with a mirror. Go to a mirror and look into your own eyes now you talking face to face with chat. See mirrors are more complicated than you think.

As someone who likes "physical" interaction with people (cuddeling/headpats/poking people/hugs) mirrors can have the huge benefit, that people actually see what you do to them and the other way around. Without a sense of touch, there is allmost no other way to experience what is happening. This is problematic, because you obviusly want to react accordingly, which becomes really hard when you do not know what your partner is doing. That is just my two cents tho. Also if you are a Desktopuser (much like myself) you will find it hard to keep track of all the people around you and what they are doing with out it.

people in vr chat who say "im depressed" "i want to kill myself" are not depressed. they want to be depressed and ENJOY acting as though theyre depressed because it makes them feel like they "go through shit" but in reality they forcefully make life sadder for themselves in order to fit in. looking at yourself in a mirror as a different person can be very enjoyable and interesting, but just constantly being suicidal for the sake of it when you have nothing to moan about in life is just selfish.

And another reason is because it's where all my friends hang out anyway. I used to get pretty bummed when I'd go to worlds like Void Club and there are around 30 people there but no one was on the dance floor because they were all at the mirror in the other room. It wasn't that big of a deal though, since I'd just bring the party to them and most of the time, they'd vibe with me, so I can't complain.

Disclaimer: This comment turned out to become longer than I intended. But maybe it give some answers to people who wonder why certain people are mirror dwellers. I wrote this comment without watching the entire video so what I say might be brought up in the video. The comment is broad in scope, and I only speak from own experience, so anything in it need to be taken with a grain of salt. It is not intended to insult, attack, degrade or hurt anyone. It is not directed against anyone in the comment section or the content creator. I guess I would fall under the mirror dweller with full body tracking category, with plans for haptic sensors. But if someone approach me and are polite, I won't call them annoying or block them. I am a selective mute (I am quite shy, mainly because of my voice) though, so I usually start with waving, and reacting to the persons actions. I use a small cat avatar (Catio), so I get head pats, boops, bean pokes and belly rubs, as long as it is done without malicious intent I don't mind it and will react accordingly. Some of my VRC friends I met, I didn't speak with for weeks, even months, they spoke with me. I would swap into an avatar with a pen they could see if there wasn't a world with pens, and then when I feel comfortable I will start speak to them for the first time. No warning, no heads up, just start talking. Those reactions are pretty funny. Some get scared that a new sound appeared, some it takes a few seconds before they realised I spoke, some have no reaction at all, some get happy I finally speak. So far no bad reactions, which have helped me start talking earlier with strangers. I am still reluctant to walk up and talk to people, I prefer being approached. I am also open with my age and gender in my bio, since I am a bit older than most VRC players I've seen. I don't mind talking with whomever (to an extent) or friend people, most are just friending for the sake of it anyway. A selected few in my friend list is people I regularly interact with. With friends or alone I also visit other worlds, like horror maps, beat saber, pool worlds, bowling, chess, movies, etc. so not only mirror dwelling, but it is a big chunk. In the end, I think some people sit there to be able to see themselves in their avatar form while talking with friends or new people. VR in general can become very immersive, seeing yourself in a different form is very important for some people. One of my friends is transgender, and for them to be able to see themselves in a different body have been very important and helpful for them. There is a good video here on KZitem talking about this exact thing, it is def. worth a look. Another group that it is really helpful for are furries, being able to take the shape of your fursona must be really exciting and liberating. I think I will cut the comment short here, or it will turn out to be a opinion piece rather than a comment. I will confess to one thing though, I have fallen asleep in VRC, in public worlds, and most of the time, someone end up sleeping next to me, so far I haven't had the displeasure to wake up to a screaming maniac ^^

I do absolutely despise the elitism that a lot of fbt mirror dwellers have, I've noticed if you are on desktop or quest they will just straight up ignore you. Hell, last night I was in a world and a group of mirror dwellers were just talking about sex work and nudes and all this nsfw stuff in a public world and some desktop guy came up and one of them started screaming at them, like the rest and sleep section of this video. He acted like he was better than the desktop and kept assuming the worst about him.. Shit makes me depressed every time I see these kind of people

If all they do is sit in front of mirrors all day and block players who try to make contact with them, the least they can do is stay off the public servers so us real humans can have a good time.

At this point I just see mirror dwellers as NPCs, they are located in preset locations, Have a fixed dialog with other npcs and ignore players. That is unless the developers have added one or 2 voice triggers for that character, these activate rare dialog options but they are usually pretty basic or based on scripted events and usually only last a few seconds.

I've always thought of the lone mirror dwellers as being people desperate for a temporary mental vacation, and seeing their virtual self in the mirror anchors them as that entity in the virtual space. There are also a lot of mutes, as the familiarity of their own voice might be enough to break the immersion of being completely separate from oneself. There's a wealth of untapped opportunities for VR cognitive therapy & research.

For PC players it's hard to have a good overview of all the ppl around you, and what is happening in the world. I sit with a mirror not to look at myself! But to see everyone around me.... I hope i can buy VR soon so i can get away from the mirror XD.

I've tried saying the same thing. Amongst a sea of users who've never considered other reasons. As an OG Second Life user, your camera is third person and you can see everyone. You want to see who's talking too. If it wasn't necessary to be in first person for VR, I'm confident a lot less people would dwell at mirrors. If there's somehow a way to solve this, you would get some people upset about ruining popular congregation locations as they are a good excuse to join other groups. A moot point, but I've seen things play out that way. 🙂

Main reason for mirror dwelling is since you can be whatever you want in vrc, changing into avatars of what you want to be, people use it as a confidence booster when they get to see themselves. I went out bought full body basically just sit at mirrors in ambient worlds to relax, its stress relief from other problems.

I feel like in a lot of cases it's not "what you want to be" but "what you want to see". For example, guys change into anime girl avatars then sit in front of a mirror to stare at their waifu.

i almost got sucked inside the mirror the first time i saw my "Virtual" body in vr.. it was a tough battle, we lost most of our comrades.. but we were lucky enough to escape, poor bastards, i cant forget the look of shock, amazement, and fear, in their faces. i will never forget that look on their faces, but i guess thats my punishment for all what i did to survive that place..

It's therapy. Especially for the last year and half when everybody was in lockdown, we couldn't go out and do stuff, hang out in crowded places to be within vicinity of other people. VR helped that. Actually, it also helps people with any kind of social anxiety. If you were to walk up to a couple of random people on the street and start listening in, they'd look at you and probably get in your face about eavesdropping. For a person who's already fairly anti-social, that sort of thing is just a real blow to confidence. In VRchat though, you can stand next to people, hear people as though they're right next to you, maintain confidence without being worried about being judged on your looks or behaviors. And other people in VRchat being confident in their anonymity are more willing to discuss their personal issues, life problems, ask for advice they wouldn't normally feel comfortable asking face to face. Most of the "mirror dwellers" I see are chatting it up with other people, either in VRchat or in their own discord channels. Being able to discuss things through anonymity is a great confidence booster, sorta like how people loosen their inhibitions on halloween when they can pretend to be somebody else for a night.

I always thought about making a world where a player can make a free appointment with a therapist type player that'll listen and give them real helpful advice. A place where a VR chat player can let out what's been bothering them in the outside world without the issue of them being made fun of. I was always my school's "back alley therapist" and even personally studied psychology, so once I get a VR headset, I might just try to make that a reality, so that those in need don't feel quite lonely.

THIS needs more Likes. You don't need a therapy license to be able to listen and hear people's problems out. Sometimes even just giving them a place to vent and actually have someone to listen to can make all the difference for someone. And the fact that VR chat gives you a place to actually be yourself, in the comfort of your own home, but also allows you to go out and explore and talk to others in an almost person to person fasion.
