In this video I take PSA's new Mk12 Mod S out to 950 yards to see what it can do. The Mod S is their take of a Mk12 rifle and it features a 14.5" barrel with a 1/7 twist and a pinned and welded muzzle device to get it to the legal rifle length. Factory ammo with a factory 14.5" rifle at this distance with a 5.56 is very impressive. While I believe that most modern firearms are more accurate than most modern shooters, this is an impressive display of the capability of the rifle and the shooter.

In the AR arena I'd like to see PSA do some more modern barrel profiles. Something like a Hanson profile or Criterion Core. The fact that they are still doing M4 and A2 profiles on their in-house barrels is a big miss in my opinion. Perhaps some 5r rifling in the Sabre line.

Since you can hit the target consistently at 950 yards with a 14.5” barrel you should try the the same range but keep going shorter til you get to 7.5” barrel but use the same optic and a good ammunition or maybe go from 20” to 7.5”

The PSA MK-12 appears to be a very capable rifle at 950 yds. It would probably perform even better with a higher power optic on top. The 14.5 “ barrel was really holding up at what should have been a long distance from that length of barrel. Compared to a MK-12 MOD 1 with almost 4 more inches of barrel with the ability for increased muzzle velocity of maybe 200-250 fps that can make a huge difference so that 14.5 “ barrel was really getting the job done.

PSA is doing great work. Their QC needs a little work but I like what they are doing regardless. Side note, shout out to all the clone correct guys out there… they help many of us swap out our old outdated gear for newer, better gear, ie: I used to have that same optic… purchased for $600 new back in the day and had the same problems you described plus it wasn’t really as durable as modern optics. Was able to sell it forgot over $2k and get a MK 6 3-18 back in the early 2010’s. Way better optic, old by todays standards but ffp w matching turrets in a compact size is nice and still very usable by todays standards.

This gun really proves Henry and Josh's sentiments on the MK12/SPR in the modern era. Essentially they have said that the SPR concept isn't really....necessary anymore. Really, what they said was that during the GWOT technology in barrel manufacturing, optics, and cartridge design have made it so that the accuracy of the MK12 is no longer relegated to just the MK12. Also with the Block 2 M4A1 program it became wide spread for military issue M4A1s to be free floated(at least wide spread within SOCOM) and it was becoming popular on the commercial market around that time as well and now obviously it's simply expected. They said, and from experience I tend to agree with them, that you can get very similar performance to an original MK12 with something like a 14.5" using a good LPVO and a good cartridge which is exactly what we see in this video. 950 yards with a rifle you've barely fired but its good quality, the ammo is good quality, and the scope is very good quality. The velocity gain going from 14.5" to 16 or 18 is noticeable but the velocity from the 14.5" is more than enough to get 5.56 to perform how you need it to considering it really truly isn't a sniper rifle and at best it's a marksman rifle but only if the user is in fact a marksman. I really wish I had a range beyond 540 yards because I'd really like to see if I can make these kinds of hits with my block 2 clone. I think I could but 540 is the biggest range near me so I have never tried. I compensate for the lack of distance with reduced sized targets but its just not the same. 😕

If you are more concerned about a caliber swap in one rifle then an AR platform is probably not the best. Maybe and Aug?... But also if you just want 5.56 and 300blk then you can always just have a separate uppper in 300blk and that's about as quick of a caliber swap you can get with and AR-15.

Well one can argue that if you follow the firearm community right now there is a big influx on shooters getting into the NFA suppressor game. So many people are now looking at more pin and welded options while also avoiding the SBR laws and to reduce Oal when a Suppressor is attached. Also 14.5 terminal velocity is darn close to 16, so other than trying to be clone correct there is no disadvantage for this barrel length.
