It takes a special kind of person to withstand this kind of procedure. I’m proud of you for the completion! So many things to remember/not lose and all the things I know you know I know about this kind of work. My head spins, but I owe you the view, just for your effort put in, my friend! You’re 🫵🏼awesome! 🪄✨

Thank you for your kind words. Filming these things helps, or at least taking photos as you go ... I quite often refer to my own videos when I come back to a particular model not having taken it apart in a few months.

Hi @@Tetrakan , Thank you so much for this amazing in depth look. I am eagerly looking for your tear down video of this, as I will need all the help I can get if I am to try this on for my self haha. I just acquired my self one of these, there's no rust, but the tapedeck isn't working. It is quite noisy when opening and closing, I imagine it need lubrication, the pinch roller isn't moving with the headessembly, and the and the play, fast forward and rewind aren't spinning either (the mechanism below sounds like its running though when engaged). I'd love to have your tear down video as a life line when doing any attempt at this, as I've never done any tape repair before, only knob cleaning. Can you tell me where to find your video? Cheers. Thank you!

Hats off to you Calum, that’s amazing work! It looks like such a complicated mechanism to take apart but is very satisfying to see you bring it back to life in the final part of the video👌🙌

Thank you for this great video! 👍🏻 Good too see someone finally share a good detailed repair of the coolest 4track out there! Love to see some more stuff about the MG614. Wil you be doing level adjustments etc also?

Thanks...there will be a tear down video covering the rest of the unit, but I don't think I documented the calibration in much detail beyond commenting on the location of trimpots etc as I took the unit apart. However, the service manual contains one of the better descriptions of the calibration process I've seen, so hopefully between that, other videos on calibration I've published demonstrated on other models and the forthcoming MG614 tear down folks will feel confident to give those procedures a try.

I have a GX-R88 which shares many design features with this mech. I have a particular problem with the potentiometer on the cam (position control) as the one you removed in the video. I see it has a slot instead of a common D shape and I need a replacement. Mine has a bad spot around the stop mode position that tends to make it hunt. Cleaned it, but of no help. Normally I would say it's not impossible to find a potentiometer to "fit". However the alignment of the shaft slot to the gear as well as the fact that it is not standard in this aspect could pose some problems for finding off the shelf replacements. I think most of these in Akai are 10K linear and the same size/shape though. Is there any known source for a verified suitable replacement? Also I think you are correct about the motor wrap. It is probably mu metal for EMI shielding. Mine has an odd amount of corrosion in strange places also, but not that bad. Good job also. Next time blindfolded? Don't you have any polysiders and clips flying into the wild blue?
