I recently restored the mecha block from an Akai MG614 4 track which had completely seized due to moisture.
In the past I've soaked rusty chassis plates in white vinegar overnight, then round the rust with wet dry sandpaper with some success. However the vinegar has a strong smell, and some of the complex mechanical parts in this cassette transport were hard to access with sandpaper...
On a whim I tried using some premium motor oil I'd bought to deal with corroded 12 volt motor mechanisms in combination with a scalpel. Not only did this allow me to remove the build up of oxidation in hard to reach corners, I found this quicker and less smelly too.
