I had a neighbor with a Rottweiler, who was digging in the ground. My thought was a mouse or a gopher, so I encouraged him. Suddenly he start yelping, and the ground hornets were out in force. I went through their gate, and unhooked his leash while both of us were getting stung. We ran about 50 yards before they started going back to their nest. I was more concerned about the dog, and watched as dozens of them crawled out of his hair. Between the 2 of us, we were stung hundreds of times, and I thank God that I was not allergic. The neighbor thanked me, and I helped him destroy the nest. He had the perfect area for his dog, that had shade all day, but not with those wasps there.

I was at a bbq with family when my cousins bf was stung by a bee. He had been stung before several times and was never allergic. It wasnt until he got a tattoo that he became very allergic to them. Most people think anaphylaxis only happens super fast but thats not always the case. He started to feel bad about 20 minutes afterwards. He thought he had just gotten too hot (we live in Louisiana) so he went inside and laid down. About 30 minutes later my cousin is screaming that he is blue and not breathing. Several of us in my family are nurses and first responders so we immediately checked for a pulse and there wasnt one. We started chest compressions while the helicopter was on its way. We got his heart started again but he was brain dead. It was so sad and something as a nurse, I wont forget.

Thirdly, the caterpillar is a silkworm and emerges as a Moth after it pupates.

As much as we hate mosquitos, nothing good comes from completely eradicating a whole species integral to the food chain (as a source of food AND as a source of population control, whether that be to humans or any other mammal) History has shown time and time again that adding or removing species from locations can have drastic changes to local wildlife, almost 99% of the time being negative. IMO, it would be better if we made the medications that counter the diseases carried by mosquitos more affordable and accessible (especially in the poorest regions of the world where most of the infections occur) and bumped up the use of counter measures like netting, noxious chemicals (THAT ARE NOT HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT), screen meshing on windows, and protective clothing.
@xessenceofinsanityx
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately a lot of those countermeasures aren't as useful as they could be - a lot of user error involved in netting and clothing, and in areas where pesticides have been used mosquitos are actually developing immunity. In addition you have increased urbanisation and land clearance brining their reservoirs closer to humans, plus a brand new issue we've been finding in recent years where climate change is causing the mosquitos that carry deadly diseases to spread to previous non-endemic areas. Dengue fever and malaria, coming soon to your European city! Mosquitos may just be the rare case where eradicating a certain species (we're talking just the disease carrying genera like anopheles and aedes; not eradicating the entire species) MIGHT actually be more beneficial than detrimental. Might. ...in case you couldn't tell, I LOVE talking about climate change and vector-borne diseases 😂

Mosquitoes are like most things affected by circadian rhythms. If affected by day biters sit more in the shade, if affected by night biters remain under lights. Also mosquitoes appear to be attracted to certain colours, red, orange and black being the worst colours to wear, while white, blue, and green are better at repelling. However cyan is supposedly another such colour that attracts so blue may be dependant on shade. Also mosquitoes are attracted by scent so wearing scent-less deodorant can help you to avoid being bitten as well.

Wasps generally will ignore you if you aren't threatening. Both bees and wasps will defend their nests feociously, wasps are more willing to defend themselves- an individual bee will largely ignore quite rough handling, being quite unlikely to sting. I had to walk close past an active wasps nest over and over last year and I always had a phobia, but I realized that even with all of the ativity, I was not getting stung, or even investigated. They become more of an issue because of allergies and because you can easily provoke them when you are afraid or unaware of their presence. They can be annoying, but like bees they do so much good for us! They kill pests that eat our crops!

Also, when a wasp sting is withdrawn, it stops umping venom until it can re-insert, in a bee it's venom sack detatches with muscles and pumps it's entire venom reserve into you. So the attack pattern is a bit different. a wasp has tp remain attatched to sting, a bee doesn't!

The itch was out of this world, it would wake me up from sleep. After two weeks my ear turned gray, and after another week that gray skin peeled off. I got bitten by a kissing bug in central Missouri just a few weeks ago. I felt the bite, which felt like a horsefly, and after knocking the damn thing off my arm I recognized it as definitely being a "true" bug (order hemiptera) but wasn't aware of any parasitic bugs in that area. So I thought it was probably an assassin bug that I had offended somehow. They arent parasitic but will bite defensively. But an assassin bug didn't entirely make sense as the coloration was wrong for an assassin bug and the bite didn't hurt like blazing hell as an assassin bug's is said to (like a wasp sting) and instead only briefly hurt, not badly at all, but then itched like crazy. I did a google search for parasitic bugs (hemipterans) native to the region and google -- the font of all knowledge -- let me down and literally didn't come back with anything at all. Until I watched this video I had no idea I'd been bitten by something potentially dangerous (thanks Simon -- you might have saved me from a severe impact on my health) but the bug that bit me was definitely the same one in the video, coloration and all. I'm seeing my doctor soon and I will tell him about the bite and hopefully I can get this "simple blood test" that Simon mentioned to make sure I don't have any creepy-crawly protozoans living it up in my bloodstream.

He has since been stung in later life with no significant reaction, so it looks like he grew out of it. Thing is, these allergies are often inheritable. I'm in my late thirties and have never been stung by either - so I still don't know if I'm significantly allergic. Here's hoping I never have to find out.

I was stung by wasps at times as a young kid, think I was about 5-7 years old last time I was stung. I didn't have any allergies at that time but have developed several allergies since so I'm terrified of wasps now because of not knowing how I'd react if getting stung. The allergies I have are at a point where I sometimes need to take emergency cortisone type medicine to ease the symptoms (despite taking antihistamines and asthma medicines to keep the symptoms under control a majority of the time) So yeah, terrified of wasps and panic if I see one nearby

I've had the unfortunate experience of being bitten by an Assassin bug which is a winged, predatory version of the Kissing bug and yikes that was painful and caused serious swelling. Felt like a splitter but made of molten metal 😮 I think I was 8 or 10 and I still remember it well.

Those 'murder hornets' wouldn't last long in Australia - for a start they are the ideal size for squash racquets. They would also face a host of hungry birdlife, to which a 5 cm wasp would be an easy meal.

We have giant wasps / hornets in Australia (east coast). There's a species that preys on huntsman spiders. It's about the size of one of those big dark cockroaches. Surprised me once, I thought I saw a huntsman grappling with a cockroach that was a bit too big for him. Turns out it was a giant wasp dragging the larger huntsman away. This was inside my lounge room in a 3rd floor apartment, so I kind of freaked out.

it makes sense that the tiny things are way deadlier than the big thing. The big thing is noticable, and actively kills, so it gets attention. Small things go unnoticed majority of the time until they have already bit you and the slow process can begin.

While the genetic plan for the mosquitos sound very futuristic, it is actually a working idea. China and other countries in Asia had a similar idea: They treated strey animals (cats and dogs) in suburban areas with a toxin, that only affects blood sucking insects, the target was mostly mosquitos. And it kinda worked. Worked in China years ago during late summer and since of late, I have a very direct comparison to Japan, where I stayed as an academic: In Japan I got killed by mosquitos. In China, almost no bites...

The major one I'm allergic to is 🐝. Found out the hard way by time I was 13. I got stung a few times but I got stung again at 13 while visiting my Grandmother. A little later I felt sick and was told to lay down. Not long after I began to 🤢 and had trouble breathing. Called out from the restroom for her before I passed out. Next thing I remember was waking up in intensive care. Ever since then I have to keep an EpiPen on me as I'm severely allergic to them. Not fun when you develop an allergy to kill you. Especially since I'm allergic to the "Cilin" Family ( Penicillin, etc) too! 😅 😓 Basically I developed an allergy after enough stings which is possible. You can eventually develop it after enough stings and Anaphylaxis may not happen directly after. I had a friend who ate 🥜 and went into Anaphylaxis 20 minutes later. Lucky enough she got help in time like I had.

Since you wondered: Hippopotamus stems from Greek (river horse), so like octopus... it's either octopuses or octopodes. The plural of potamos is potamoi, so if you want to be a real pedant, say: "it's hippopotamoi, fight me bro!" xD. Silly question btw, but shouldn't the caterpillar have a different name than Vespa luctuosa?

Potentially controversial opinion... As Humans we are predisposed to saving ourselves. Understandably so. But as members of the Earth's biochemical system, it stands to reason that nature "develops" things that act as population control agents, even for Humans. This is seen in livestock the most, but also seen anywhere population density of a certain organism becomes too high for sustainability, requiring a correction, or risk collapse. I feel like viruses, such as mosquito borne ones, are just the best example of Nature producing balancing agents for itself. Example thought experiment. How many more hundreds of millions of people do you think would be alive today, if nobody ever died of Malaria? That number could be up to a billion extra people, easily. Just something to think about.

If you want to talk about wasps, enter the Executioner Wasp. It is the largest paper wasp species in the world native to Central and South America with Mexico, Texas(Southern Texas) and Arizona being the only places in North America to find them. They have the most painful sting out of any insect with a pain that lasts for 36 hours. The pain like most stinging insects comes in 2 waves with the first being a electric, paralyzing pain like the Tarantula Hawk and the second being a full on burning pain. Coyote Peterson who famously got stung by it, described the pain as “feeling like flesh peeled back” or “ripping flesh off”. Executioner Wasps are different from other wasps in that their venom is so potent that it can cause tissue necrosis( meaning the skin around the site you were stung will basically begin to rot). Although these wasps have such a overkill sting and venom and a fearsome reputation, they are not aggressive and are really docile if observed from a safely close distance. If you do a video on wasps and you talk about the Executioner Wasp on it, you are welcome for the information. I’m an expert on bees, wasp and hornet myself so I’m glad I was able to lend some information to you.

The mosquito is ranked the #1 killer of humans per annum. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area that has the biggest mosquitos in the world. The humble Hexam Grey doesn't bite humans and its larvae activity hunt other mosquito larvae reducing the population that spreads disease. Although probably a bad idea , introducing similar species in areas of high disease could help reduce transmission through the predation of the larvae.

My other half and I ended up in a flat that was flea infested. We ripped up the carpets and all sorts to try and reduce their numbers by removing their homes and smoke them out with flea bombs. Even had exterminators out to spray the entire flat and it did nothing. Turns out they were living in the wall cavity and there were several holes in the skirting board and they were just pouring out of these holes. My partner and I were bitten beyond belief to the point that she had a mental breakdown and I ended up bitten that badly that I ended up with sepsis. My left lower leg was bright red and had swollen to twice it’s size. The heat radiated could be felt across the room, no word of a lie. I couldn’t walk on it as the skin had turned rock hard making my leg like walking on a stick of wood. It then got to the point where I could t stand up, couldn’t go to the toilet without falling over so I had to crawl my way there and then back to bed. I was so unwell and then when my other half noticed my leg she immediately got me to call up the out of hours service whom directed me ti hospital and I had to be there within the hour. I got there and they rushed me in, and plied me with anti-viral drips and antibiotic drips until they could identify what the problem was. My bloods came back and they said it was an extreme case of Cellulitis which was turning septic. My inflammatory markers should have been 50, mine were 4,500 and rising. I was plied with so many drips of antibiotics I lost count after 8 whole bags within 24 hours. Eventually the infection was under control but I was left with scarring on my leg from the bites, plus the blistering and cracks in the skin from where the flesh was so stretched. I was informed that I had contracted sepsis and I was mere hours from death. If I had have left it another day and wait for the GP to open on Monday morning like I was gonna do I would have been dead, the ward sister told me that straight up. No two ways about it I would’ve been dead within hours if I hadn’t have gotten to A&E when I did. Thankfully I listened to my other half, and all of that was the result of flea bites. Don’t risk it with fleas, and don’t fall for stereotypes, fleas don’t just appear on animals they just use animals as transport and a food source, and they use our clothes to hid too. They use us as food and they come from outdoors, not magically on the back of a dog or a cat. Once they’re on you and inside they’re a nightmare to get rid of. If you see any on you, take care of that immediately and don’t let them use you as a buffet, as it could kill you like it almost did me.

I used a flea treatment on my cat. The damn things were in my bed. The brand name starts with a C. It killed every flea in my apartment in about a month. All the fleas need to do it walk on the cat. While you're on wasps, be sure you check on the Tarantula Hawk. Worst sting of all wasps. I mean, it stuns tarantulas. Sonoran Desert.

Unfortunately every species modification has unintended consequences. By reducing the total number of mosquitoes the food resources of many species are severely impacted. Bird populations will plummet, bat colonies can collapse, frogs and other semi-aquatic animals don't eat enough to reliably reproduce, and insect-eating fish, in particular trout and bass, lose weight and can become vulnerable to parasites. Now, I am not advocating for mosquitoes, I hate the little buggers. I am one of those people who is inexplicably attractive to them; if there is one anywhere near it will ignore all other humans and head straight to me. I react badly to their bites often with weeping raised sores that itch and last for days. Still, I wonder every time we mess with the natural order of things that we might be concocting some unforeseen detrimental effect.

Simon just a heads up you are using the term species incorrectly. A species is a specific collection of animals that can breed and produce fertile offspring. An asian giant hornet and european wap/yellow jacket are not the same species but are in the order of hymenopteran with it's sub order Apocrita containing the well known ants bees and wasps, with wasps beloning finaly to the family Vespidae to which both the afformentioned wasps are species in. Hope i'm nopt being a pain brining it up or got nay of this wrong or that would embarassing for this particualr biovet XD
