Steve makes this a passing joke, but wow is this a beat-for-beat remake of Michael Crichton’s “The Andromeda Strain.” Initial disaster with a pathogen that mutated on a spacecraft & crash landed in the wrong place, birds falling out of the sky, needs to be retrieved by guys in hazmat suits. Evolves implausibly fast to eat through plastic seals. Needs to be destroyed quickly or it will set off the lab’s self-destruct failsafe. Obviously there are a bunch of differences, but the basic outline is pretty clearly cribbed from Crichton’s story.

I can't recall specific examples but I feel like that happened multiple times on Macgyver. Change a few story beats to insert ads and let Macgyver make a thing out of other things and Bob's your mother's brother. Much easier to write stories someone else already wrote. Plus the show could grab up all the props and any footage from the movie (if it was made by the same studio presumably) to kick the overall production value up a notch.

Another versatile and adaptable show: Quantum Leap (the original). It's adaptability comes from the same place as Mac's, it is about the person. As long as you had Sam Beckett, the show could be a romance, a comedy, a thriiller, a mystery, a "monster movie", a courtroom drama, a sports show, a war piece, a period piece (all of which they did at least once). Maybe it says something about how to make a show that works...
@cryofpaine

Honestly, a lot of 80s shows had that. A-Team, Knight Rider. Any show whose premise was "show up and save someone". Leverage does that now. Maybe that's why I like it so much. Star Trek can kind of do this too, though it usually doesn't. TOS did it the most. And Doctor Who (who kind of reminds me of a more wacky MacGuyver).

@@cryofpaine Stargate Sg-1 was an ensemble cast show as well and from the late 90's/early 2000's that was that way simply because RDA didn't want to carry the whole show on his own like he did on MacGyver. And it lasted 10 seasons and 2 movies. So it's not just the 80's or characters showing up to save someone that provides that elasticity. It writing out of the box and taking chances. Not being afraid that one dumb episode will sink the whole show. Something broadcasters and streaming platforms are increasingly less inclined to do these days.

It was a fun show. It was cheezy and campy, like most things from the 80s. But I really enjoyed the premise behind it. I didn't really catch it as a kid, but grown up, looking back on it, it's one of the few shows where the protagonist/action hero was basically an engineering nerd, who didn't believe in shooting people. In a decade rife with musclebound dudebros, who embody the shoot first, don't bother asking questions mentality of some political parties, and who never read a book in their life because they were always focused on the gym and steroids. In the middle of ALL that, there is MacGuyver. This mild mannered guy, hates guns, abhors violence, and instead uses his BRAIN, and science/engineering to solve his problems. And it WORKED. The show WORKED. I wish more shows went for this angle of their protagonist.

I used to watch McGyver as a little kid with my brother (may he rest in peace), and I was really into it. I still have nostalgia for the series, but not enough to like, revisit it regularly. The episodes kinda blur together for the most part. It was a fun show I watched decades ago with a sibling. The experience of watching it almost mattered more than any individual stories. But this episode kinda stayed with me. And I know a lot of people hate the cheap emotional gut punch of a "the dog dies" story beat (and for good reason), but I actually think this episode does it right. Something in the way they shot the scene conveys a dog clearly communicating "I have no idea what's going on, but clearly I screwed up, and I'm so, SO sorry" that any dog owner is very familiar with, better than any scene from a TV series or film I've ever seen. And this being so real-seeming in such a fantastical scenario kinda makes the scene extremely impactful for me. Also, there's some heartbreaking tragic irony, Steve's joke aside, in the fact that the dog is just, being a dog. If I remember the episode correctly, it was established earlier that the dog jumping up and snatching a thing from the scientist's hand was how she used to play with it. I have only vague recollections of the episode from like 30 years ago, and I still remember how it made me feel. Cheesy or not, I think that's actual good storytelling.

When he was first hired to play as O'Neill, his agent insisted that as the main actor, his name appear as big as the title. In an attempt to fit his name under the title in the same font it overlapped off the page, Ric being dropped from the front, on being dropped from the end, and you're left with hard Dean Anders.

This episode was an, ahem, "homage" to "The Andromeda Strain" (1971 film based on a Micheal Crichton novel). Space microbe killing animals. Check. Secret lab disinfects people by zapping the outer layer of their skin into ashes. Check. Microbe eats through seals and gaskets. Check. Self-destruct mechanism on a short timer is about to blow up the facility. Check. Biggest differences are that in The Andromeda Strain, the research team in the laboratory was a whole bunch of people, and the self-destruct was a nuclear bomb, and detonating it would have been disastrous since the titular microbe loves itself some radiation. And nobody does much McGyvering, I don't think I saw a single swiss army knife there. Not saying it's a bad episode. Or that Mac shouldn't have been thrown into a previously explored situation. His MacGyvering is an interesting twist.
