Nichiren was great. He repackaged the best of the teachings of Tendai and Shingon Buddhism into something that regular people can actually hope to practice and gain benefit and understanding from. He was a great follower of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is no accident that Nichiren Buddhism has spread worldwide, even if Soka Gakkai International, the organization that has largely done so, is extremely questionable. Nichiren-shu, the traditional and largest Japanese Nichiren order, is wonderful and moderate, not militant or prosyletizing, and has locations in the USA.

I love this video I'd like to add one thing to Nichiren's story: Nichiren really loved his mother, but in the period it was declared that women can't become buddhas (unless they became fully ordained nuns, which was hard to achieve), so Nichiren tried to prove, ordinary women can attain buddhahood, too. The XII. Chapter of the Lotus Sutra is about an 8-year-old girl who became a buddha after he offered a jewel to Manjusri bodhisattva, and because of this, Nichiren stated this Sutra is the one that has to be followed.

@@Linfamy What I am saying is that the man had a hard life from the get-go and he was often looked down upon even before he started this branch of Buddhism and poverty/people looking down their noses at you has a way of enforcing negative self image, which after a while becomes a source of comfort. Basically, a case of "better the devil you know than the one you don't." This isn't to say that he was a Groveler (he obviously wasn't,) just that maybe he had a romantic notion of the long-suffering hero laying down his life for the greater good...that is until he faced execution and it became too real.
