You probably have to gradually build up your intake of niacin (in the form of nicotinic acid) to about 1000 - 2000 mg/day to achieve a substantial increase in HDL. I've done it. But the problem with niacin (besides the skin flushing, which is harmless but bothersome) is that you will possibly see a rise in blood sugar (i.e. higher HbA1c) and a rise in Homocysteine, which you don't want. If you can wrap your head around the idea that the consumption of fat, including saturated fat, is AOK, then indulge in that and your HDL will increase. Just be sure you are limiting your carb intake significantly as well.

For most of my adult life, my HDL has been at least 80 and often over 100. For example, my last three test results were 106. 114 and 111. I have tried to research what such high levels might indicate, but I have not really found anything meaningful. I also cut down on my butter muffins and pancakes. I am of a healthier weight of 63kg, 173 cms with somewhat okish diet. I had my tests retaken a year later and to my surprise the total number went from 5.8 down to 4.6. I did not go through anything extreeme. Now, 5 years later or so i am sitting at 5.2 with my HDL being 1.99. I just live my avocadoes and olive oil and i take it on empty stomach sometimes first thing in the morning. I also like my eggs. I year ago I was diagnosed with gallstones, multiple gallstones. My surgeon wanted to remove my gallbladder right away but I asked him to wait for me to get back from Disney world. He cautioned me and said go ahead and " limp along" watch your fats. During the time I was there I found your videos on your gallbladder formula. I started taking them and I went on a diet (WW). I have lost 20 lbs. Today I got my cholesterol results. Overall chol 231, now 179. LDL 162, now 115. HDL 50, now 48. So much better, however I need to work on my HDL's. Thank you so much for all your help. I just ordered 6 more bottles of Gallbladder formula. I see my surgeon the end of this month for a follow up and colonoscopy consult. Won't he be surprised?! 😁

Hi Dr Berg, thanks for the video.. I have a question, thanks in advance for your help.. is it ok to take this if I have diabetes? I've heard it can increase blood sugar levels. I want to take it for cholesterol.. The one I have here is the now foods sustained release niacin to reduce flushing, is it no good for this use?

Hey, Doc? If avocado raises HDL & u can't get them down w/out gagging on the texture, how about avocado oil (not heated 2 much? @ all?)?

Dear Chenoa Macsweeney, I find avocado to have the texture of soft butter. I do love guacamole though. I’m wondering if guacamole can substitute for plain avocado?

No these have 2 very different nutrients factors. For example, avocados have a very helpful level of potassium abd vitamin b5 which are not present in the oil. However many people's taste buds do change after some time doing healthy keto and intermittent fasting. So I bet you would you like avocados if you are doing healthy keto and intermittent fasting for a few weeks or months.

It only too 2 months to raise your HDL? My HLD was 35,52 4 months ago but I've been running everyday since then and ate only healthy food with olive oil and took 16 mg of niacin everyday. Do you think it has increased a little? I want to reach at least 45 so I can finnaly say that I'm safe since my total cholesterol was 137 and LDL was 92
