This Vlog episode details tips a wheelchair accessible day out in London.
The episode covers travelling to London (From Canterbury by Train) and then crossing London , either on foot from Charing Cross passed Buckingham Palace and through Hyde Park or via the underground from St Pancras to Green Park and then a London Bus to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
We were heading for The Natural History Museum , a museum I would visit every holiday with my father when I was Tom's age. I remember going there by taxi from Charing Cross as my father wasn't confident travelling across London. After many hours researching different routes we took to the streets of London and found the walk from Charing Cross nice in the summer time (its about 45 mins - 1 hour) but in the winter using the underground is a much better way of getting there (as long as you know the routes and which stations are accessible).
Transport for London (TFL) has a handy step free PDF which is worth studying before any journey as there are limited underground stations which are step free - content.tfl.go...
Andrew who has Muscular Dystrophy uses a mid-wheeldrive Electric All Terrain Electric Wheelchair from Magic Mobility is non ambulant and requires a hoist to be lifted in and out of his electric wheelchair. On trips like this Andrew takes a fold up portable commode strapped to the power wheelchair , if a changes places toilet (one with a hoist) is not available he can transfer from his chair to the commode using a sliding board , the commode can then be positioned over most toilets. Thankfully to this day the commode has never needed to come out of the bag on days out. The portable commode is an Oyster folding shower chair www.mobility-sh... .
The Electric Wheelchair is a Frontier V6 which is All Terrain and ideal for the great outdoors but also quite versatile for the city , you can see how easily it can squeeze onto the underground and on a London bus.
